Part 4 — When the Rich Boss Asked for My Hand, I Thought I Would Save His Child, but After His Funeral the Lawyer Smiled Strangely

Mr. Valeri placed the phone on the table and locked the door.

The sound of a car engine was heard outside.

Alex had come early.

“Is the police with him?” I asked.

“Not yet. But he can file a false statement and say that you forced Richard to change the will.”

Lia came close to me.

“Mom, is someone throwing us out of the house again?”

Her question struck my heart more strongly than any threat.

“No, darling. This time we are not going anywhere.”

A fist struck the door.

“Elene! Open up!” Alex shouted. “This house will soon be mine!”

Mr. Valeri turned off the recorder.

“Now listen to my advice. Do not get into an argument. Everything will be recorded.”

“But we already have a recording.”

“We have more.”

He opened the last folder and took out a small memory device. Its surface was scratched, as if someone had pressed it against a stone wall while hiding it.

“Richard gave this to me six months earlier,” he said. “He told me to use it only if Alex began putting pressure on you.”

The door shook again.

“Open up, or I’ll call the police!” Alex shouted.

Mr. Valeri connected the device to the laptop.

Richard’s voice sounded in the room.

“Alex had been stealing money from the fund for years. I confronted him. If anything happens to me, every transfer, conversation, and false signature is in these recordings.”

Alex became silent outside.

Then we heard his voice.

“You yourself told me to wait for the old man’s death!” he shouted at someone. “And now you are telling me that everything was recorded?”

A second voice, clearly that of his lawyer, answered in fear:

“Alex, be quiet. You should not even have been near this house.”

Alex did not know that the door was still closed, but the microphone was spreading his words throughout the whole room. He heard his own voice through someone else’s ears for the first time.

“Did I say that?” he whispered.

“Yes,” I answered. “You did.”

Ten minutes later, two patrol cars stopped in the yard. Alex tried to escape, but he was detained at the gate. Mr. Valeri handed the police the recording, the camera video, and the list of transfers.

Alex’s lawyer refused to defend him that same day.

“I cannot enter this case,” he had told him. “You brought your own confession to the police yourself.”

Alex still tried to regain control.

“Elene, it was all a misunderstanding!” he shouted at me from the yard.

I watched from the window.

“There is no longer any need for me to correct your misunderstandings,” I told him.

The next day the court issued a temporary protective order. Control of the fund was transferred to independent trustees. The investigation established that Alex had been transferring large amounts from Richard’s accounts for several years. He was charged with attempted seizure of property, fraud, and threats.

I was not happy about his punishment.

I simply believed for the first time that my and Lia’s future no longer depended on another person’s conscience.

That evening we took everything out of the old wing of the house. The room became empty, but I left Richard’s portrait in one corner. And beneath it I placed the small copper key.

Lia looked at the picture for a long time.

“Mom, did Richard really love us?”

“Yes,” I told her. “He simply did not know how to say love. So he tried to build a future.”

“Then why did he leave you alone?”

I was going to search for the answer to this question for a long time.

“Sometimes a person leaves, but what they awakened in you remains.”

Three months later we moved to a new city. I sold part of the house, as Richard’s will stipulated, while the rest of the money remained in Lia’s fund. I began working in a small kitchenware store. In the evenings I attended legal courses, because I no longer wanted to touch any document with fear.

!!!  Part 4 — A Few Hours After the Burial, the Lawyer Knocked on My Door, and at His First Words My Face Froze

Lia joined a chess club at school.

I hung her first drawing on the wall. It showed three people standing: me, Lia, and an old man holding a small chessboard in his hands. Above them, in childish letters, it said: “Home is a place where they do not turn you away.”

The first winter came peacefully.

In the mornings I opened the store door, cleared the snow, and walked with Lia to school. Every evening she studied at the kitchen table, while I drank tea from Richard’s old cup. The golden crack was still there.

Six months later I received a letter from Alex. It was from prison.

“Elene, I know that you forgave me. Help me start again. I will give up the house, only do not speak against me in court.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I folded it.

I called Mr. Valeri.

“Should I send an answer?” I asked.

“Only if you wish.”

I was silent for several seconds.

“Yes. One sentence.”

On the letter I wrote: “I can no longer carry your consequences on my back.”

Nothing more.

That night Lia spread out the chessboard.

“Mom, today I will play and you will learn.”

“Why?”

“Because it is not only the queen who protects the king, but the whole board.”

I laughed.

I placed Richard’s old cup on the windowsill. The morning sun passed over its golden crack and drew a thin, warm line across the room.

At that moment I understood that Richard had not left me wealth.

He had left me a choice.

And for the first time in my life I chose my own home myself.

The crack in the cup shone in the sunlight.

No one would turn us away again.

Missed the beginning?
