Part 4 — On my birthday, my mother-in-law told my child that I was a liar, then my husband swung his hand and the guests fell silent

For several seconds after Elena’s words, I forgot to breathe.

“Who filed it?” I asked.

“Margaret. The document says that you pose a danger to the child.”

Margaret raised her head.

“I only wanted to protect Sophie.”

“From her own mother?” I asked.

“You are unstable.”

Elena put the phone on the table.

“The request has already been canceled. Our application reached the court earlier. Also, the judge issued a temporary protective order.”

Margaret covered her mouth with her hand.

“Alex would not have allowed this.”

“Alex is speaking with the investigators now,” I told her.

For the first time she was left alone.

Not one guest went to help her.

Dr. Kessler stood at the door, and his hands trembled so much that he dropped his phone twice.

“Claire, please,” he told me. “I made a mistake.”

“You did not make a mistake; you made a choice.”

“I will return the money to you.”

“Money will not return my child the nights when she thought trusting her mother was betrayal.”

The police took Alex away.

The lawyer took charge of Margaret, although before that the woman still tried to give orders.

“Call my brother.”

“I already called him,” the lawyer answered.

“And?”

“He said he would no longer become involved in this case.”

“He cannot abandon my family.”

The lawyer looked at me.

“Mrs. Harper, this family is no longer his legal problem.”

Margaret slowly turned her head.

“You will regret this.”

I did not answer anymore.

I took Sophie’s hand and left the hall.

The carpet sank softly beneath our feet in the hotel corridor. The golden clock hanging on the wall showed eleven o’clock at night. Sophie walked silently, but stopped at the elevator.

“Mom, did Dad really hit you?”

“Yes.”

“Because you were not a liar?”

A lump stuck in my throat.

“Because he thought he could hide the truth by force.”

!!!  Mein Mann verließ mich wegen meiner Kinderlosigkeit und gründete eine neue Familie, doch bei unserem Wiedersehen verschwand sein Lächeln

“And now?”

“Now the truth is coming home with us.”

The next morning Alex’s lawyer called me.

“My client is ready to apologize.”

“An apology cannot cancel the court proceedings.”

“He says that you love the family.”

“I loved it too. That is exactly why I stopped saving it.”

“Can there be a negotiation?”

“Only about the child’s safety.”

“You are very harsh.”

“No. I am simply protected for the first time.”

In the following weeks everything developed quickly.

The bank examination confirmed the transfers. Dr. Kessler admitted that he had received money from Margaret and prepared false assessments about me. His professional authorization was suspended.

The court opened a case against Margaret for fraud and interference in custody. She was not sentenced to prison, but a large part of her property was confiscated and she was forbidden contact with Sophie.

Alex apologized in court.

I did not sit beside him.

The judge played the recording in which Alex said: “Taking Sophie away will be easy if the doctor confirms it too.”

When Alex heard his own voice in the room, he seemed to shrink.

“I did not say that,” he whispered.

The judge looked at the screen.

“That is your voice.”

“Then I was not resembling myself.”

“But these are your words.”

For the first time Alex could not find a person to blame.

He did not look at me either.

That evening I emptied his study at home. Only a family photograph remained on the desk, in which all four of us were smiling. I took the photograph from the wall and put it in a drawer.

His dark blue tie lay on the chair—the one he had worn on the evening when he hit me in the face.

For several days I could not enter the room.

Then I opened the door, picked up the tie, and put it in the trash bin.

!!!  The rich guest struck me in front of everyone, but as soon as the man who entered the hall opened the door, he strangely stopped breathing

The room remained empty.

But for the first time there was no fear standing in the empty space.

Three months later we moved to another neighborhood. It was a small apartment, with a wooden radiator beneath the window that knocked strangely at night. Sophie hung a drawing of the sun on the wall. The sun wore large glasses, and below it was written: “Mother is no longer silent.”

I started a new job at a financial auditing company. Every day at seven in the morning I walked to the subway station. On the way I bought a cinnamon bun at a small bakery, and warm milk for Sophie.

We were learning ordinary life again.

Sophie began asking questions.

“Mom, if someone says that your feeling is wrong, should you believe them?”

“No. You should ask why they want you not to trust your own eyes.”

“What if they get angry?”

“Then you should listen to yourself more carefully.”

The first snow came in December.

Sophie stood by the window and drew a small house on the glass with her palm.

“No one will come in here without our permission,” she said.

“That’s right.”

That same evening I received a letter from Alex.

“Claire, I know that I ruined many things. Margaret made me lose myself. I want you to let me speak to Sophie at least once. I miss you too.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

At the end of the message it said: “Our family can still be saved.”

Sophie was drawing in the kitchen. The pencil tip slid softly across the paper.

I wrote a reply.

“My contact with Sophie will be possible only according to the rules established by the court. I will not return to a place where a blow was the answer to the truth.”

I deleted the extra words.

I left only the first sentence and sent it.

Alex called me immediately.

I did not answer the phone.

!!!  Part 4 — When I accidentally called the mafia boss “darling” in his office, all four guards in the corridor fell silent at once

He called a second time.

Not then either.

After the third call I blocked the number.

Then I took out the small black notebook, on whose cover Sophie’s colored star was still visible. On the last page I wrote one sentence: “We survived not because they changed, but because I no longer stayed with them.”

Sophie entered the room.

“What are you writing?”

“What I must not forget anymore.”

“And will you forget?”

“No.”

She looked at the notebook, then went to the window. Outside, the snow was falling more strongly. The street lamp in the yard flickered and drew long shadows on the white covering.

Sophie took my hand.

“Mom, will you really always be beside me now?”

“Always.”

I put the notebook on the windowsill.

The little star drawn on its cover caught the lamp’s light.

And for the first time it did not resemble notes, evidence, or a struggle.

It resembled a path.

We were home.

Missed the beginning?
