Part 4 — After the Kidney Donation, My Husband Brought Me Divorce Papers, but His Face Suddenly Went Pale at the Surgeon’s Words

Priyanka ended the call and looked around at everyone in the room.

“The police are on their way now,” she said. “But until they arrive, no one is leaving this room.”

Thaddeus tried to laugh.

“This is absurd. I run this family.”

“Not anymore,” I said.

His phone immediately rang. His mother’s number was visible on the screen. Thaddeus answered.

“Mother?”

Screaming could be heard from the other side. The phone was so loud that everyone could hear the words.

“The bank froze our account! The insurance company stopped the payment! Someone sent them the documents!”

Marisol covered her mouth with her hand.

“Impossible.”

“No,” I said. “You simply forgot that a chemical reaction always has a result.”

Thaddeus leaned toward me.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“I know exactly.”

Priyanka opened another file on the tablet. It showed a letter from my lawyer. Several hours earlier, he had filed a statement in court that my signature on the divorce papers concerned only the divorce and contained no waiver of property rights.

The added paragraph with which they were trying to transfer my land turned out to be forged.

Thaddeus called Harold Crane.

“Come immediately.”

In response, only silence was heard.

Then Crane said:

“Mr. Bromel, I can no longer represent you.”

“You signed all of this!”

“That is exactly why I am speaking to you for the last time.”

The call ended.

Thaddeus threw the phone beside the bed. Then I noticed that his right hand was trembling. It was with that same hand that he had signed the papers with which he wanted to erase my life.

The police arrived in ten minutes.

But the heaviest moment came later, when the investigator played the recording in front of him.

Only his own voice could be heard in the room.

“As soon as I get her to sign, the land and the policy will remain with us.”

!!!  The Groom Publicly Humiliated Me at the Altar, but When Another Man Saw the Ring, His Smile Disappeared

Thaddeus lowered his head.

The recording repeated his words again.

“She has only one organ that we need.”

Marisol began to cry.

Thaddeus closed his eyes.

“I did not say it like that.”

The investigator answered calmly:

“That is your voice. You know it better than anyone.”

When they were taken away, a strange lightness remained in the room. Not joy. Simply a space that for the first time was no longer filled with their voices.

The next day the investigator and the lawyer brought my things from the guesthouse. Almost nothing had remained in the room. I found only my father’s old silver pen under the bed.

Beside the pen, a frame with my wedding photograph lay on the floor. The glass was broken, but my face was still visible in the photograph.

I did not take it with me.

Months later, the court declared the forged documents invalid. Thaddeus and Marisol were sentenced for fraud, forged signatures, and falsifying the insurance case. Their family funeral home was closed, but I did not meet this news with celebration.

His mother’s kidney was functioning after the transplant. Doctor Priyanka told me that saving her life was still real, despite the people who had turned that kindness into a weapon.

I wanted this to be what I remembered.

Not their downfall.

My own choice.

Six weeks later I returned to my father’s house. The floorboards still creaked, and oak branches could be seen from the kitchen window in the morning.

I got my job back at the school. In the first lesson I spoke to the children about reactions.

“If a substance changes,” I asked them, “can it return to its old state?”

One student raised a hand.

“No, but it can take a new form.”

I smiled.

“Exactly.”

Every evening I walked in my father’s four-acre forest. Pine cones lay on the ground, red clay clung to my shoes, and the wind moved the branches as if someone were speaking to me quietly.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esclusero dal Natale dopo aver salvato il loro locale, ma quando chiusi il rubinetto mio fratello smise di sorridere

Three months later the first snow came.

At the kitchen table my little niece, Elena, was sitting and drawing a house on a sheet of paper.

“Who is this?” I asked when I saw a little woman in the drawing.

“You.”

“Why don’t you have a husband beside you?”

Elena put down the pencil.

“Because now you are the one in charge of the house.”

This simple sentence struck me more than all the words of the court.

The next day I received a letter from Thaddeus. At first I did not open it. Then I read it anyway.

“Give me a chance to explain to you. I did everything because of my mother. We can start over.”

His signature stood at the end.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I wrote a short reply.

“You have already explained everything. I do not need to start over. I am already in a new life.”

I did not send the letter. I gave it to the lawyer to add to the case.

In the evening I placed my father’s old silver pen on the windowsill. Its surface was covered with scratches, but it still shone in the light.

Once, with that pen, I signed the marriage papers.

With the same pen I wrote my answer.

Outside, snow was falling quietly.

And for the first time, I was no longer waiting for anyone.

Missed the beginning?
