Part 4 — Five Years Later, My Ex-Husband Looked at the Child and Lost Color, but His Sister Was the First to Stop Smiling

“I did not do this!” Alexander shouted.

His voice spread through the yacht’s salon as if something heavy had fallen in a closed room.

The lawyer who was standing beside him looked at the phone and slowly shook his head.

“Alexander, your digital signature is on the application.”

“No one has my password.”

“Vanessa did,” I said.

Vanessa moved toward the door.

Marcus’s security guard blocked her way.

“Let go of me!” she shouted.

“No one is touching you,” Marcus replied. “You simply are not going anywhere until the investigators arrive.”

Vanessa looked at Alexander.

“Brother, are you really taking her side?”

For the first time Alexander did not answer.

His face was pale, but not as it had been when he saw Liam. Now he no longer looked like the man who had mistaken his own pain for the truth.

His lawyer pulled him aside.

“We must deny everything,” he told him.

“How?”

“We will say that the recording was edited.”

“And the letters?”

“We will need a technical examination.”

The lawyer folded the tablet and looked Alexander in the eyes.

“No, Mr. Vale. I will no longer sign this case. After so much confirmed material, this is self-deception.”

Alexander lowered his head.

At that same moment his phone rang. Then once again. The family bank, the company board, private security service, and the New York house — calls appeared on the screen one after another.

“Do not answer,” I said.

“Claire, I have to find out what is happening.”

“For five years you did not want to find out what was happening. Now all the answers came at once.”

Marcus called the police. Vanessa was still shouting that she would sue everyone.

“You have nothing against me!” she shouted at me.

I closed the laptop.

“You have your voice. Your signature. Your accounts. And your decisions.”

For the first time not anger, but fear appeared on Vanessa’s face.

Two hours later I was sitting in the port office when the investigator played the recording again. This time Alexander was there too.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo me prohibió hablar con mi padre durante el embarazo, pero cuando él levantó mi cobija, Mauricio dejó de respirar

Only the hum of the old air conditioner could be heard in the room.

“When Claire leaves, Alexander will no longer be able to think with his heart,” Vanessa’s voice could be heard.

Alexander closed his eyes.

Then my name sounded in the recording. They were talking about my future child as if about a thing that could be hidden.

“That is not my voice,” he said quietly.

“No,” I answered. “It is your sister’s voice.”

“And I am listening to myself repeating her lie.”

His fingers rested on the folder lying on the table. It was the wooden folder with the small copper anchor engraved on it, in which my evidence was kept.

“Can I fix everything?” he asked me.

“No.”

“I still want a relationship with Liam.”

“That wish does not give you the right to enter his life.”

“I am his father.”

“Biologically, yes. But fatherhood is not only blood. It is being there every day for five years. Waking up during a fever at night. Saving the first tooth. Bringing an umbrella to kindergarten when it rains.”

Alexander lowered his head.

“Give me a chance.”

“You already had a chance. When I told you those letters were not mine.”

That night the yacht slowly returned to the port. The city lights swayed on the surface of the sea. Liam was sleeping in the children’s cabin, holding a small wooden dolphin that he had received from Marcus that evening.

I stood at the door and listened to his breathing.

On the table lay my old small thing — a copper-colored hair clip with a small glass dolphin attached to it. Five years ago, when I was thrown out of the house, it accidentally remained in the pocket of my jacket. That day Liam was still in my belly. I often wore the clip then because Alexander said that when I was nervous, I constantly pushed my hair away from my face.

That night I thought for the first time that the object was no longer a remnant of the past.

!!!  The fire had trapped my children by the window, while a single shout from a neighbor made the color drain from my husband's face.

It was a witness to my survival.

Vanessa was arrested the next morning on charges of financial fraud, forgery of documents, and intentional concealment of evidence. Several weeks later the court froze her accounts and ordered the return of twenty-eight million dollars.

I went to the hearings only when necessary.

I wanted justice to do its work, but I did not want my life to remain only around her crime.

Alexander testified in court.

For the first time he said aloud:

“I accused Claire of infidelity without checking the evidence. It was my mistake that I did not listen to her.”

I sat at the back of the courtroom.

I heard his words, but I could not find in them a reason to return.

Three months later I left New York and rented a small apartment in Barcelona. The sea was not visible from the window, but in the mornings the smell of oranges and freshly baked bread rose from the nearby market.

My work was still digital investigation. Now I led a small team and helped women against whom false evidence was being used.

Liam started school.

In the very first week he drew our new house. Three people stood by the windows: me, him, and a small round figure holding a dolphin in its hands.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“The future,” he told me.

“It is very small.”

“I have not managed to draw it yet.”

I smiled.

In winter the first snow fell. Liam made a small path on the balcony and stuck the wooden dolphin into the snow.

“Mom, will Dad find us here too?”

I knelt beside him.

“If he ever comes, he will knock on the door first. And we will decide whether to open it for him.”

Several weeks later I received a letter from Alexander. It was short.

“I am asking you for nothing. I simply want you to know that I no longer blame you. If you are ever ready, I want to listen to Liam.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I sent only one reply:

“You must change not for my return, but for the sake of truth before yourself. Do not disturb our peace now.”

He did not write to me again.

Perhaps for the first time he fulfilled my request.

That evening, while brushing Liam’s hair, I saw the old copper-colored clip. It had been lying on my desk, but the boy picked it up and attached it to my hair.

“Now you will not worry either, Mom,” he told me.

I went to the window. Snow lay on the roofs of the city. A warm lamp was lit in the room. My son was breathing beside me. The door was locked not because of fear, but because I was the one deciding whom I would let into this house.

The small glass body of the dolphin caught the light.

This time it no longer reminded me of the lost marriage.

It reminded me that the truth had found a way anyway.

And for the first time I was no longer waiting for anyone.

Missed the beginning?
