I was standing in the airport waiting hall when my newlywed husband told me that his secretary was also supposed to go with us on our honeymoon. In John F. Kennedy Airport, the wheels of suitcases squeaked across the floor, while linked announcements sounded from the speakers. I was holding Alexander’s hand and was still trying to maintain the expression of a happy newlywed.
He looked at his passport, then touched the expensive watch on his wrist.
“Darling, there is something I have to tell you.”
There was such calmness in his voice that I immediately understood: he had decided this something a long time ago.
“What happened?”
Alexander straightened the sleeve of his suit.
“Chloe’s quarterly report remains to be finished. She will have to come with us. She will work on the plane and will not interfere with us for long.”
For several seconds I simply stared at him.
Then I looked over his shoulder and saw Chloe. She was wearing a white, almost wedding-like dress and carrying a suitcase like mine. Only a small pearl charm hung from the handle of her suitcase. On mine was a small wooden seagull, which my mother had tied to it before the wedding.
Chloe lowered her head.
“Sophia, I am very sorry that I am disrupting your honeymoon. Alexander simply needs help.”
Her words sounded like an apology, but her light-blue eyes shone with triumph.
The arm wrapped around Alexander’s waist squeezed me more tightly.
“Sophia, please, do not make a scene. There are many people here.”
It is strange how one sentence can completely strip a marriage bare. Two days earlier he had told me at the altar that he wanted to spend his whole life with me. And now he was offering me the role of a third person on my own honeymoon.
I smiled.
“Work must always come first.”
Alexander’s face immediately relaxed. He probably thought that he was still controlling everything.
“That is exactly why I love you,” he told me and kissed me on the cheek.
Chloe quietly giggled.
They went ahead at the baggage check-in counter, while I took out my phone. All the tickets and the hotel reservation had been made in my name. I stopped my finger on the screen. I touched the wooden seagull given to me by my mother, which was swaying on the suitcase handle.
Then I pressed the reservation-cancellation button.
Four seconds.
The money returned to the account.
Alexander learned nothing.
“I am going to the restroom,” I said. “You go to security.”
“Come soon,” he answered thoughtlessly.
I watched their backs until they disappeared around the corner. Then I turned my suitcase around and walked toward the exit. Through the taxi window, the airport lights spread backward, while the phone in my hand was still warm.
When I got home, I put the box with my wedding dress in the closet. Then I found a letter from Alexander that had accidentally remained in my work bag the previous night. There was only one sentence on the paper: “If Sofia finds out, everything will be over.”
At that moment I still did not know what all of it meant. I knew only that Alexander and Chloe were going on an eleven-hour flight, while I was not going back.
Eleven hours later, on the island of Maui, Alexander carried the suitcases into the hotel room. My luggage was nowhere to be seen. Nor was I there.
His phone rang.
A message from an unknown number said: “Alexander, congratulations on your honeymoon. I really wanted to go with you, but a three-person honeymoon would probably have been tiring.”
He opened the second message. It said only: “I forgot to tell you one small detail at the airport…”
Alexander’s hand froze on the screen as he read the last words…
Alexander’s hand froze on the screen, while Chloe looked at the ocean through the window. Salty air entered the room, but despite the heat, cold sweat appeared on her skin.
“What did she write?” Chloe asked.
“Nothing.”
“Then why did you turn pale?”
Alexander put the phone in his pocket. There were two enormous beds in the bedroom, and between them, white frangipani flowers stood in a crystal vase. The room had been prepared for a romantic trip, but at that moment it resembled an empty stage on which the actors had forgotten their own lie.
A third message arrived.
“You always said that you alone controlled every contract. Is that really so?”
The color disappeared from Chloe’s lips.
“Does Sofia know?”
“Be quiet.”
“What does she know?”
“I told you, be quiet!”
Alexander struck the phone against the table. The crystal vase rang slightly. Chloe stepped back, but not fear appeared in her eyes—suspicion did.
“You told me she was only a designer and did not understand the company’s affairs.”
“That is how it is.”
“Then why is she writing to you like that?”
Alexander could not find an answer.
At the same time, I was standing in our apartment in Manhattan and opening the box of wedding photographs. It was four in the morning. Raindrops struck the windows, while the kitchen wall clock tapped sharply every minute. I took out one of the wedding photographs: Alexander was smiling, while Chloe stood among the guests and looked not at the camera, but at my husband.
On the back of the picture I wrote by hand: “The truth is always hidden in the details.”
I had not written those words by accident. A week before the wedding, the company’s financial adviser, Daniel, came to me. He told me that he had discovered strange transfers in the money given for the purchase of my design studio. The money went to firms that officially did not belong to Alexander’s company, but they all had one thing in common: Chloe prepared their documents.
Daniel handed me a folder.
“Sophia, I cannot keep this to myself. If you sign the merger of the companies after the wedding, you will share these debts too.”
“Alexander told me that the merger was only a technical procedure.”
“Then why was he hiding these pages?”
There was a copy of my signature in the folder. The signature was mine, but I had never read the document. Alexander told me it was a form needed for the bank and made me sign it quickly because of the wedding preparations.
That night I found a camera recording in his office. Not because I had suspected something from the beginning, but because a notification from the security system accidentally came to my phone. In the recording, Alexander and Chloe were arguing.
“If Sofia withdraws the signature, everything will collapse,” Chloe was saying.
“She will not be able to do that after the wedding,” Alexander replied. “First the honeymoon, then the merger, then the sale of her studio. In six months all the debts will be in her name.”
At that moment my hands froze in front of the screen. Still, I did not call the police. I first needed evidence that would turn their words from an ordinary recording into a plan for a crime.
On Maui, Alexander called the hotel administration.
“Where is my wife?” he asked.
“Sir, your wife was not registered in this room at all.”
“That is impossible.”
“The reservation is in the names of only two guests.”
Chloe raised her head.
“You knew from the beginning that she was not coming?”
“No.”
“Then why did my suitcase have a charm like your wife’s luggage?”
Alexander looked at Chloe. For the first time he saw that the pearl charm had come from the same store as my wooden seagull. It was his gift to Chloe, but he had bought it as if it were an ordinary accessory.
My phone rang. Alexander’s name appeared on the screen.
I answered.
“Where are you?” he asked, as if nothing had happened.
“At home.”
“Why didn’t you come?”
“Because I did not want a third person on our honeymoon.”
“Chloe came for work.”
“It sounded different in the recordings.”
Silence fell.
“Sophia, you do not know what you are doing.”
“I know that you used my signature.”
“Who did you speak to?”
“To a person who kept your secrets.”
Alexander lowered his voice.
“If you leave this marriage, you will not leave alone. You will take your studio with you too.”
“That is exactly what I was afraid of.”
“You will return tomorrow morning and we will settle everything.”
“No. Tomorrow morning you will learn what I will settle.”
I ended the call and wrote to Daniel that I was ready to meet. He answered only one thing: “Come. But do not come alone.”
The next morning I went to his office, where a sealed folder lay on the table. Daniel locked the door and told me that inside was such a document that after seeing it Alexander would no longer be able to say that all of this was a mistake.
His fingers reached the seal. The edge of the folder opened and the first sheet appeared…
His fingers reached the seal. The edge of the folder opened and the first sheet appeared. My signature was on it, but beneath it the date was written as two days before the wedding.
Daniel turned the sheet toward me.
“This is the contract for the sale of your studio. It appears that you are transferring the company entirely to Alexander’s controlling firm.”
“I did not sign this.”
“I know. That is why we requested a handwriting examination.”
An expert named Mariam was sitting in the room. In front of her were a small tape recorder and a copy of my identity document placed under glass. She turned on the recording.
Alexander’s voice sounded.
“Her signature must look exactly right. After the wedding no one will ask when she signed it.”
Chloe’s voice followed.
“What if she finds out?”
“She will not find out. Sofia is in love with me. She will not even read the contract.”
My ears were buzzing. I looked at the sheet under the glass and felt my fingers freeze.
“When was this recording made?” I asked.
“Your office camera recorded it six days before the wedding,” Mariam answered. “You installed the camera yourself because samples were disappearing from the studio.”
Daniel took out a second sheet.
“And this is the main thing. The handwriting examination confirmed that your signature on the document was transferred from an old contract. This is forgery.”
I closed my eyes. I wanted to remember Alexander’s face at the moment when he told me at the altar that my trust was most precious to him. Now those words seemed to me only an echo remaining in an empty room.
My phone rang. It was Alexander.
“Do you know already?” he asked.
“I know everything.”
“It is not as you think.”
“I heard the recording.”
Silence.
“Chloe thought of it,” he said at last.
“I heard your voice too.”
“Sophia, please. We are married.”
“That is exactly why I trusted you.”
“If you publish this, both our lives will be ruined.”
“You have already ruined my life. I am only cleaning up the ruins.”
Daniel put another document on the table. It was a letter from the bank stating that Alexander’s firms were hiding six million dollars in debt. They needed my studio to cover this debt. The honeymoon had simply been invented to gain time: while I was on the shore, they would make me sign the final merger document.
“Why did he bring Chloe?” I asked.
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Because he believed that you would understand nothing there. And Chloe claims that Alexander also promised her a share of your studio.”
At that very moment Chloe called me from Alexander’s phone. Her voice was trembling.
“Sophia, I did not know it would end this way for you.”
“But you knew that my wedding was becoming your trip.”
“Alexander told me that you were planning to separate.”
“And that is why you bought a white dress?”
Chloe began to cry.
“He lied to me about everything.”
“Maybe. But you saw with your own eyes whom you were deceiving.”
I ended the call. Daniel immediately called a lawyer, and together we signed a temporary injunction that prevented Alexander from using my accounts and studio.
I was still thinking that the worst had already happened when Daniel’s phone rang. He listened for several seconds, then his face changed.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Alexander did not remain at the airport. He boarded a plane.”
“Where is he going?”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“To New York. And he has also filed a complaint against me, claiming that I stole the documents.”
I went to the window. Snow was beginning outside. A new message from Alexander arrived on my phone: “Before you get to the lawyers, remember that there is one more contract in your name.”
I opened the message. It was a photograph of a document bearing my signature. Beneath it was only one sentence: “If you deny this, you will become guilty too.”
But Alexander did not yet know that this was the last lie he would use against himself…
