My Mother Cut Up My Clothes and Made Me Appear Alone at the Wedding, but as Soon as the Door Opened, the Smile Disappeared from My Mother’s Face

My mother locked the guest-room door from the inside and threw the cut-up dresses at my feet while downstairs they were arranging glasses for my brother’s wedding.

Pieces of fabric lay on the bed. The sleeves of the dark-blue dress had been cut off separately, the legs of the black trousers had been split in half, and the collar of the white shirt had been cut as if someone had hidden its face. My suitcase stood open, and beside it my mother’s copper-colored scissors gleamed.

A small moon was engraved on its handle. It was the only thing left from my grandmother’s sewing box, which I had kept since childhood.

“Are you going to wear this?” my mother asked, looking at the only dress left on the bed.

“I have nothing else left.”

“That is exactly why I did it. Sometimes a person needs to see reality.”

Aunt Marlene appeared behind her, a wineglass in her hand. She looked at the cut-up clothes and burst out laughing.

“Maybe someone will still take pity on you in this dress with holes and invite you on a date, dear.”

Their laughter spread through the room, while I dug my fingers into the fabric so they would not see how my hand was trembling.

“Why did you do this?”

My mother shrugged.

“This is your brother’s day, Emily. You always manage to turn everything toward yourself. At least now remember your place.”

It was not the first time I had heard these words. In childhood they spoke to me this way when I took second place in a competition, when I dared to enroll at a university in another city, when I could no longer remain silent at a family dinner. To them I was always the one who was too sensitive and never important enough.

But this time they did not know one thing.

I was not alone.

I had already been Alexander Hale’s wife for fourteen months.

Alexander was the kind of person whose surname appeared in business magazines, while his face was almost never shown. He had made his fortune in a technology company, but he loved silence more than money. That was exactly what I liked about him. He did not ask me to explain anything to my family. He did not tell me to give my mother one more chance.

Our marriage took place in a small coastal town, in front of only four witnesses. I did not tell my family because I knew what they would do. Mother would use his surname, Lucas would borrow money, and Aunt Marlene would tell every guest how lucky I was.

Four hours earlier, when I found the cut-up clothes, I sent Alexander only one message: “Mother cut up everything of mine.”

His reply consisted of four words.

“Send me the address. I’m coming.”

By evening the house had been taken over by the noise of the wedding. Hair dryers roared downstairs, the sound of dishes came from the kitchen, and someone was calling Lucas. I sat on the edge of the bed and touched Grandma’s sewing box with my palm.

At exactly six o’clock, the bell rang.

“Emily, will you open the door?” Mother shouted. “You are not doing anything useful anyway.”

I went down the stairs. When I opened the door, Alexander was standing there. He was wearing a dark-gray suit and had the calm expression on his face that he used with strangers. But when he saw my tired face, his eyes changed immediately.

“Are you all right?”

I nodded.

“You really came?”

“You called me.”

He kissed me on the cheek and came in beside me. The glass slipped from Aunt Marlene’s hand. It shattered on the wooden floor.

!!!  Voltei depois de cinco anos e encontrei minha família escondida num galpão; quando perguntei por quê, minha irmã parou de sorrir

Lucas stopped on the stairs. Father slowly lowered the newspaper. Mother came out of the kitchen and, for the first time in her life, had an expression as if she no longer recognized her own house in the room.

Alexander looked at everyone.

“Alexander Hale,” he said. “Emily’s husband.”

My mother’s lips froze.

And for the first time, I did not lower my head.

Alexander took a small velvet box from the inside pocket of his jacket and placed it in my hand. My mother immediately took a step forward.

“What is that?” she asked.

Alexander answered calmly:

“The reason tomorrow’s wedding will pass for you in a completely different way.”

And before anyone could say anything, his hand moved toward the box’s clasp…

Alexander’s fingers touched the small clasp of the velvet box, but my mother stretched out her hand.

“Do not open it here,” she said. “This is my house.”

“That is exactly why it is interesting that you are so afraid,” Alexander replied.

Silence fell in the room. The wine spilled on the floor had spread into a dark stain, while the shards of the broken glass gleamed near my shoes. I stood beside Alexander and felt my breathing slow.

Lucas came down from the stairs.

“Mother, what is happening?”

“Your sister is putting on a drama,” Mother said quickly. “She suddenly brings some rich man and now intends to humiliate everyone.”

“I am not intending to humiliate anyone,” I said.

“You always do this when you lack attention.”

Alexander looked toward me. His gaze was calm, but something heavy was hidden beneath that calm.

“Emily, do you want us to open it here?”

At that moment I understood that he was leaving the choice to me. For the first time he was not trying to speak in my place before my family. He was simply asking me how far I was ready to go.

“No,” I answered. “Let us go upstairs first.”

We entered the guest room. Alexander closed the door, but this time he did not lock it. My mother’s voice still reached us through the wall.

“This is a mistake, Emily! Tomorrow is Lucas’s day!”

“Mother is afraid,” I said quietly.

“Of what?”

“I don’t know. But this is not only about the clothes.”

Alexander placed the box on the table. Grandma’s sewing box lay beside it. The small moon engraved on its lid was cold beneath my finger.

“I found this item in your suitcase,” he told me.

“Mother did not see it.”

“That is exactly why I left it there. This was inside.”

He took a thin key out of the box, with a small metal plate attached to it. My grandmother’s initials were written on the plate.

“Where is the lock?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your grandmother called me two weeks before she died,” Alexander said.

I turned toward him.

“Grandmother spoke to you?”

“Once. She told me that if you ever confronted your family, I must not believe what they said about you.”

I felt cold in my throat.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she told me that you had to figure everything out yourself. And because you were happy for the first time then.”

A loud knock sounded on the door.

“Emily, come out!” Lucas shouted. “I will not let this pass on the eve of my wedding.”

Alexander picked up the box again.

“Now you have to decide. Will you stay here and play their game, or will you leave with me?”

“If I leave, Mother will say that I ruined everything.”

“You did not ruin anything. You only disappointed them in their hope that you would remain silent.”

The door opened. Lucas stood on the threshold. He was holding my cut-up black dress.

“You will wear this tomorrow,” he said. “Or you will not appear at all.”

“Why do you want me to look like this?”

“Because everyone must understand that no one should worry because of you.”

Mother stood behind him. In her hands she held Grandma’s sewing box.

Something broke inside my chest.

“Where did you get that?”

Mother looked at the box and, for the first time, could not answer me.

Alexander took a step forward.

“Mrs. Hale, this item should not be with you.”

“You know nothing about our family.”

“I know enough.”

At these words Mother’s face changed. She put the box on the table, but could not close the lid completely. The small moon flashed in the light.

“A notary will come tomorrow morning,” she said. “And then you will understand what family betrayal means.”

“Why is a notary coming?” I asked.

Mother smiled, although fear was already visible in her eyes.

“Because your grandmother’s house belongs to us. And tomorrow you will sign the documents if you want your husband’s name not to become involved in all this.”

Alexander took the key out of the box.

“No,” he said. “Tomorrow the person who has lived under someone else’s name for years will sign.”

“What do you mean?” Lucas asked.

Alexander turned on his phone and placed it on the table. A file bearing my name appeared on the screen. My mother leaned forward.

The voice recording began.

“Tomorrow morning, before the guests arrive, she must sign…”

“Tomorrow morning, before the guests arrive, she must sign,” my mother’s voice came from the phone. “If she refuses, we will tell everyone that she is psychologically unstable and married her husband for money.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the room.

Aunt Marlene’s laughter sounded in the recording.

“She is always frightened. She will sign.”

Then my father’s voice was added:

“Lucas needs the house. The business debt must be paid.”

The recording stopped.

All color left my mother’s face. Lucas first looked at the phone, then at Father, who stood at the door holding the newspaper as if the paper could protect him.

“This is fake,” Mother said.

“The recording was made two days ago in your own kitchen,” Alexander replied. “The report confirming the audio file is here.”

He spread documents across the table. Seals, dates, and signatures could be seen on the papers. My signature was there, but I had never written it.

I picked up the paper. The letters looked familiar, although the movement of the hand was not mine.

“What is this?”

“A change to your grandmother’s will,” Alexander told me. “You are her only heir. She left you both the house and the savings. But six months ago someone refused the inheritance in your name.”

“Not me.”

“I know.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside lay an old key, the original notarial deed, and a small memory card.

“Your grandmother left all this with a lawyer. The key belongs to the safe built into the wall of the house. And the memory card contains her video message.”

Mother rushed forward.

“That is impossible! She could not get out of bed.”

“But her mind was completely clear,” Alexander said.

!!!  I Waited Four Days for My Father, Until the Neighbors Surrounded His House and a Police Officer Listened to a Strange Recording

We played the video. My grandmother appeared on the screen. She was pale, with a cream-colored shawl wrapped around her shoulders, but in her eyes stood the stubbornness I remembered from childhood.

“Emily, if you are watching this, they are probably again trying to convince you that you cannot make decisions in your own life. Do not believe them. The house is yours because you were the only one who came to me even when there was nothing left to leave. Your family will tell you that money will corrupt you. In reality, they are afraid that they will be left without money.”

At the end of the video, Grandma looked directly at the camera.

“Do not sign anything out of fear.”

The screen went dark.

I could not cry. Instead of tears, such emptiness opened in my chest, as if I had kept one room locked for years and now the door had been forced open.

Lucas shook his head.

“Mother, you told me that the house was already mine.”

“I was doing it for you,” Mother shouted. “Your wedding, your debts, your future…”

“You made her sign in my name?”

Father said quietly:

“Lucas, calm down.”

“You knew too?”

Father could not answer.

Alexander opened a second folder.

“Here are the bank statements. The money that left your grandmother’s account went directly into Lucas’s company account. Here is the signature examination as well. The forgery is confirmed.”

Mother looked toward me.

“Emily, we are family. You will not take this to the police.”

For the first time I understood that the choice truly belonged to me.

“You have already taken it where it needed to go.”

Alexander’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and his expression changed.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“The bank’s security department.”

He left the call unanswered, but a new message arrived several seconds later. He read it and quietly exhaled.

“What happened?”

“Someone tried to open the safe in your grandmother’s house tonight.”

Mother stepped backward.

“That is impossible. The house is locked.”

Alexander turned toward me.

“No. Someone is already there. And if that person opens the safe, we will never know what they took…”

At that moment, the sound of a car engine came from downstairs.
