My son’s life managed to save his sister, but on Hannah’s eighteenth birthday she opened a letter and a guest turned pale

Hannah found a card written in Luka’s handwriting among the gifts—on the day when my deceased son had already been dead for six years.

It was seven in the evening. Three girls were laughing in our small living room, while candle wax slowly dripped from the lemon cake on the table. A small piece of golden paper was stuck to Hannah’s hair, and she looked so happy that for several seconds I, too, forgot how much the approach of this day hurt.

Luka was eighteen when he donated his own liver to save Hannah’s life. The doctors told us that both of them would get through the operations. But four days later Luka’s heart stopped.

Since then, Hannah’s birthday had been not a celebration for me, but a silent test.

“Mom, is this the last present?” Hannah asked me, picking up a small wooden box.

“Open it, my girl.”

Inside the box lay a silver bracelet. A small round plate hung inside it, engraved with Luka’s favorite phrase: “Do not be afraid while I am here.”

Hannah ran her fingers over the inscription and smiled.

“Luka used to say this, didn’t he?”

“Every time you were afraid in the hospital.”

Her smile faded in an instant.

A white envelope appeared beneath the gifts. On it was written only: “For Hannah. On her eighteenth birthday.” The handwriting looked so exactly like Luka’s that the glass nearly fell from my hand.

“Mom, did you prepare this?” Hannah asked me.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

No one answered. Only the low hum of the refrigerator motor could be heard in the room.

Hannah opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph. In the photograph Hannah was standing three days earlier, near the university library. The picture had been taken from close up. So close that even the small scar on her right cheek could be seen.

On the back of the photograph was written one sentence: “Happy birthday, little sister. I promised you that I would be here.”

The color drained from Hannah’s face.

“It’s a bad joke,” her friend Elene whispered.

“Luka is dead, isn’t he?” Hannah looked at me.

I could not answer. For six years I had repeated his death every day, like a prayer, like a punishment. I remembered the doctor’s voice. I remembered the white curtain. I remembered Luka’s empty bed.

“Mom, tell me you didn’t do this.”

“I didn’t do it.”

At that moment the doorbell rang.

Everyone fell silent.

When it rang a second time, Hannah stepped back. I went into the hallway and took hold of the door handle. My fingers were trembling. On the shelf beside the door lay Luka’s old camera—the one I had taken from his pocket before his funeral and had not turned on even once since then.

The bell rang for the third time.

Someone said in a low voice from behind the door:

“Marina, I know you are there. This is Luka’s last request.”

Hannah called after me:

“Mom, do not open it!”

But the stranger on the other side had already pressed the handle down, and something heavy slid across the floor at my feet. I bent down to see what it was, and just then I caught between my fingers a small memory card hidden inside the envelope…

I opened the door only a few centimeters. A man around thirty stood on the threshold. He held a black camera bag, and Luka’s old silver keychain hung from its handle.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Niko. I was Luka’s friend.”

Hannah stopped behind me.

“All Luka’s friends came to the funeral,” she said. “You were not there.”

Niko lowered his eyes.

“Because Luka did not tell me where the funeral would be.”

“What does that mean?”

He took a small recorder from the bag.

“You were supposed to be given this only when Hannah turned eighteen. But today was the first time I dared to come.”

“Why?”

“Because someone knows about this bag and has already threatened me twice.”

Hannah handed me the memory card.

“Mom, turn it on.”

For several seconds only breathing could be heard in the recorder. Then Luka’s voice sounded. The same velvety, calm voice that for six years I had heard only in dreams.

“Mom, if you are hearing this, the operation is over. But if the doctors tell you that something happened to me, trust Niko. Everything in the hospital is not as it seems. Do not call Dad. He will return when he realizes that money exists in Hannah’s name.”

The recorder stopped.

Hannah covered her mouth with her hand.

Niko said quietly:

“This is still not everything. Luka knew that more than one person was lying that night. And if we listen to the second part of the recording, they will learn that the card is with you…”

Niko placed the recorder on the table. The clock showed eight at night, but such silence fell over the house as if time had stopped altogether.

“Turn on the second part,” Hannah said.

“You may not be ready,” Niko replied.

“I lived six years with one lie. Now I can withstand the truth.”

He pressed the second button.

Luka’s voice sounded again.

“If Hannah is hearing this, it means I did not return home. Mom, do not believe that my death was an ordinary complication. Doctor Vakhtang knew that the part of the liver they would take was enough. But before the operation Dad came to the hospital and gave the doctor something.”

The rustling of paper sounded in the recorder.

“I happened to see it in the hallway. Dad said that the fund allocated for Hannah’s treatment had to remain under his control. He gave the doctor my medical file and told him that if I survived, everything would be exposed. I do not know what they did. But Mom, if you receive notice of my death, demand the complete operation records and the DNA conclusion. No one showed my body to anyone before the burial.”

The recorder stopped.

Hannah stood up from the chair.

“Is Dad alive?” she asked.

I could not find an answer. Her father, Giorgi, left us when Hannah was five. After that we received only one letter, in which he wrote that he could not pay anything and was no longer interested in our problems.

Niko placed a thick folder on the table.

“Luka left this with me. Operation records, fund transfers, and the doctor’s signature. The official cause of your son’s death says liver failure. But Luka’s liver was not damaged. He was poisoned in small doses over several days.”

The sound of blood filled my ears.

“You knew this for six years?” I asked.

“I knew there was suspicion. I received the evidence only today.”

“Who sent it to you?”

Niko looked at Hannah.

“Doctor Vakhtang. Before his death he confessed that Giorgi received money every year from the fund created in Hannah’s name.”

Hannah clenched her hand around the bracelet.

“Why did he send me the photograph three days ago?”

Niko lowered his head.

“I took it. Luka’s instruction was that I watch over you until your eighteenth birthday. He thought Giorgi would return.”

At that moment the telephone rang. An unknown number was displayed on the screen.

Hannah answered.

“Hannah,” a man’s voice said, “your brother died because your mother could not make the right decision. And now your money belongs to me.”

The line went dead.

Niko immediately looked toward the window. Across the street stood a black car, without its headlights.

“He is here,” he said. “And he still does not know that Luka recorded everything…”

He picked up the phone, but a new message appeared on the screen: “If you call the police, Hannah will not be able to stay at home tonight…”
