My Twins Were Handing Out Flowers at a Billionaire’s Wedding When the Groom Saw Them and Lost the Color in His Face

My seven-year-old twin girls were walking toward the altar at a billionaire’s wedding when the groom saw them and froze as if two ghosts had appeared.

Three days earlier, in our small kitchen in Queens, everything began ordinarily. It was eight in the morning. Slices of bread were burning in the pan, while the wall clock ticked loudly every second.

“Mom, tell Maria that the pink bowl makes porridge taste better,” Betty complained.

“It really does,” Maria clung to the bowl with both hands. “Pink has a happy taste.”

I laughed. I reached for the phone when I was expecting a work email. But on the screen I found a strange message: “Flower girl selection confirmed.”

Dresses provided, transportation arranged — no, all of this was written in Georgian, but it was described with such luxury that at first I thought someone had entered the wrong address. The wedding was to be held at the Grand Sterling estate. Dresses would be prepared for the girls, they would be taken by car, and they were even promised a private fitting on Fifth Avenue.

Then I opened the invitation.

Amanda Sanders and Daniel Harden.

The milk carton fell from my hand and burst on the floor. The white liquid gathered around my shoes, while my breath caught.

Daniel was not merely a billionaire executive. He was my former boss, former lover, and the father of my two seven-year-old girls.

“Mom?” Betty asked quietly.

Maria tugged at my sleeve.

“The thing with your teary eyes is happening again.”

“I’m fine, sweetheart.”

But in Betty’s eyes I saw Daniel’s sharp blue color and realized that the memories buried eight years ago were already rising to the surface.

At that time my name was Rachel Monroe. I was twenty-six, drowning in debt, and working nights too at Harden Technologies. Daniel was thirty-one — ruthless in business, brilliant, and so influential that every voice fell silent when entering his office.

Our relationship began late at night.

“Someone has to save you from starvation,” I would tell him, placing cold food on his desk.

“Do you call this love or an employee’s duty?” he laughed.

When we were alone, the billionaire disappeared. In his place appeared Daniel, the boy from Cleveland whose mother cleaned houses for the rich. He burned pasta, laughed at his own mistakes, and admitted that sometimes he was still afraid of waking up in that little house.

Then two pink lines appeared on the test.

I bought tiny yellow shoes and repeated alone in the room: “Daniel, we are going to have a baby.”

But Daniel always had a new crisis. A board meeting, Tokyo, London, saving the company. And I knew one thing — in his world, a child would not be a child, but another sheet of a problem.

So I disappeared.

I left neither a letter nor an explanation. For eight years I repeated to myself that silence had protected my girls.

The wedding coordinator called me that same day.

“Mrs. Chen, we need to arrange a fitting time for Betty and Maria.”

“I don’t know whether they’ll be able to participate.”

“May I ask why?”

I did not have time to answer. The girls burst in wearing paper crowns.

Then I heard an unfamiliar man’s voice on the phone.

“Ask Rachel why she changed her surname.”

Every muscle in me froze.

It was Daniel.

He knew my name. But the most frightening thing was that someone in the background said:

“They really are his children.”

That night I watched the girls sleep for a long time. Betty held a little copper star in her hand — the one I had given her for her birthday and that she had never taken off. Under Maria’s pillow I found their birth certificates.

In the morning I went to the Grand Sterling estate. Black cars stood at the entrance, and white rose petals lay on the stairs.

Daniel was not there. Instead, Amanda Sanders was waiting for me.

“You must be Mrs. Chen,” she said, looking me over as if I were a stain on her dress.

“Why did you invite my children here?”

Amanda smiled, but her eyes did not smile.

“They will play a special role in Daniel’s wedding.”

“Does Daniel know who they are?”

Her hand stopped on the silver-colored bag.

“That is a question you should ask him yourself.”

At that moment footsteps sounded behind the door. Someone was coming quickly. Amanda opened the bag and reached toward the dark folder inside……

The folder had still not been opened when Daniel pushed the door open. Eight years had passed, but I still recognized his footsteps.

“Rachel,” he said.

“Why are my children here?”

Daniel looked at Betty and Maria. Surprise flashed across his face first, and then something heavier appeared.

“I didn’t know they existed.”

“I can’t believe that.”

“I’m not asking you to believe it. Only listen to me.”

Amanda put the folder on the table.

“This must be cleared up before the wedding begins,” she said.

“You knew my real surname,” I said. “That is why you brought the girls.”

Amanda’s smile disappeared.

“All I knew was that someone had hidden the past from Daniel.”

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Eight years ago I received a letter from you. It said that you were leaving with another man.”

My heart contracted.

“I did not write such a letter.”

Only the sound of the wall clock was heard in the room. Daniel took a folded sheet of paper from his pocket.

“Then who wrote this in my name?”

Amanda looked toward the door.

“That is why we gathered everyone today. The answer is in the folder. But before we open it, you need to know that at this wedding the bride is not the only one hiding something…”

The girls’ frightened caretaker screamed behind the door. The sound of glass breaking came from below. Daniel ran outside, while I rushed to the folder and put my hand on the lock…

The lock caught between my fingers. It took a second attempt before the small metal tongue pulled back. From the folder I first took out a folded letter, then a copy of an old audio recording and a document certified with the clinic’s seal.

“Read it,” Amanda told me. Her voice was trembling for the first time.

I unfolded the sheet. It was not my handwriting. The letter said that I no longer loved Daniel, that I was carrying another man’s child, and that I was leaving his life forever. At the end stood his signature — as if he had received it and believed me.

“This is forged,” I said.

Daniel returned to the room. He had a small cut on his cheek, and glass fragments lay on his shirt.

“There was no one outside,” he said. “They turned off the security cameras.”

I held the letter out to him.

“Did you receive this?”

Daniel looked at the sheet and his face changed.

“My personal assistant brought me this letter eight years ago. He told me that you had left it.”

“I did not leave it.”

“Why would you have lied to me?”

“Because I was pregnant then and could not reach you.”

Silence settled in the room. Amanda lowered her eyes. Daniel looked at Betty and Maria as if noticing their hair, smiles, and eyes for the first time.

“Are they my children?” he asked.

The clinic document contained the genetic test result. Daniel held the sheet with both hands.

“The match is ninety-nine point nine percent,” I read quietly. “Paternity is confirmed.”

Daniel sank into a chair.

“Eight years… I thought for eight years that you hated me.”

“And I thought you would never want our children.”

Amanda turned on the audio recording. The voice of Daniel’s former assistant, Victor Crane, sounded in the room.

“If Rachel leaves, Daniel will agree to the marriage. And the girls must be at the wedding so that at the necessary moment Daniel takes everything upon himself.”

Daniel stood up.

“Amanda, you knew?”

“I only knew that Victor was playing against you. The wedding was his deal, not mine.”

“Then why did you agree to marry me?”

Amanda looked into his eyes.

“Because Victor told me that if I refused, he would destroy your company.”

At that moment Daniel’s phone rang. His lawyer’s number appeared on the screen.

“Mr. Harden,” a voice said, “the extraordinary shareholders’ meeting has already begun. Victor has frozen all the accounts and is claiming that you are psychologically unstable. But that is not the worst news. The police found one file in your personal archive…”

Daniel pressed the phone to his ear. His eyes slowly moved toward me.

“What file?” I asked.

After several seconds of silence, the lawyer said:

“The one showing who gave the order on the day you disappeared…”

The phone almost fell from Daniel’s hand. And at that moment I realized that the truth of our past was only the beginning…
