After seven years of marriage, my wife told me I had no rights over her body — her face suddenly changed at my response

That evening my wife directly told me that her body was none of my business, while for the first time I did not try to ask her to stay.

Two candles were burning in the kitchen. Her favorite pasta was steaming on the table, garlic bread was wrapped in foil, and the bottle of wine stood unopened between two glasses. Warm light poured through the house, but there was such cold in the room, as if I had left the windows open.

I left work early. I put a small paper box in the cupboard, containing her favorite lemon cake. Seven years earlier, on our first anniversary, she had told me that the smell of such a cake reminded her of childhood. That day I thought this memory could still reach her heart.

Grace came home at nine o’clock. She tossed her bag onto a chair, looked at the table, and took her phone in her hand.

“I’ve already eaten,” she said.

“Sit down anyway. At least for five minutes.”

“Justin, I’m very tired.”

She sat down on the sofa and stared at the screen. And I stood there with a serving spoon in my hand, wondering when I had become a guest in my own home.

Someone wrote something on her phone. Grace smiled. That small smile turned out to be more painful than any shouting.

“Grace, are we okay?” I asked at last.

She did not even raise her head.

“Why should anything be wrong?”

“Because you don’t talk to me anymore. Because you lie beside me and act as if I were a wall.”

She exhaled heavily.

“Don’t turn everything into a huge emotional problem.”

I put away the food. I blew out the candles. I washed the dishes alone, while she, a few steps away, moved her finger across the screen.

That night half of her bed remained untouched in the bedroom. I felt a faint trace of unfamiliar perfume on the pillow. In recent months Grace often came home late, but I always found an excuse for her: she was tired, she had had a difficult day at work, she had stopped at a friend’s.

By the fourth week, patience had lost its voice.

It was ten in the evening in the living room. The television stood turned off, and beside her phone on the table a silver keychain gleamed. I had given her this keychain on our wedding day. That night I noticed for the first time that our initials on it had almost completely worn away.

“We need to talk,” I said.

“About what?”

“About us. About the fact that you are here, but you are no longer with me.”

Grace slowly put down her phone.

“What do you want from me?”

“I want my wife back.”

She gave a short laugh.

“When I want intimacy, I’ll tell you myself. When I don’t want it, I won’t come near you. It’s that simple.”

“I’m not asking for control. I’m asking for a conversation.”

“You are always asking for something.”

“I’ve been by your side for seven years.”

Her gaze pierced me for the first time.

“What I do with my body is none of your business.”

The house fell silent.

No, it was not simply quiet. It was as if every clock, every refrigerator sound, and every street car had disappeared at once.

I stood before her and suddenly realized that love carried by only one person is no longer a relationship.

I took the coat hanging on the chair.

“Where are you going?” Grace asked.

“Where I will no longer lie to myself.”

“Are you really leaving?”

“Yes.”

I closed the door. I did not slam it.

That night I stayed in a small hotel. The room smelled of lemon cleaning product and old carpet. I checked my phone every few minutes, but the screen remained empty.

In the morning there was no message from Grace.

Instead, a notification about an unknown transfer appeared in my bank account. The money had been withdrawn the previous night. The recipient’s name was visible only by initials, but I already knew those two letters…

Now the phone lit up again. This time Grace was calling me. I brought my finger to the answer button, but before I pressed it, someone slid a white folder under the door…

The folder was sealed with the hotel administration’s stamp. My name was written on the envelope, and below it was the address of a law firm.

I ended Grace’s call.

“Mr. Morgan, this was left for you in the morning,” the administrator told me.

“Who left it?”

The woman looked at me for a moment and lowered her voice.

“A man. He said that you were expecting him.”

I was expecting no one.

As I opened the folder, I took out the first sheet. It contained a statement from our joint account. The amounts had been disappearing in installments over several weeks. The last transfer had been made to the same initials that had appeared on my phone.

Then I found a small memory card. Only one word was written on it: “Listen.”

I drew the curtains in the hotel room and put the card into the laptop. For several seconds only the sound of wind could be heard. Then Grace’s voice sounded.

“Justin will come back anyway. He is afraid of being alone.”

The second voice was a man’s.

“What if he doesn’t come back?”

“Then we’ll sell the house and split the money.”

I froze in the chair. This conversation had been recorded several days earlier.

But the recording did not end there. At the very last moment Grace said something that made my hands go cold…

❤️ Thank you for following this story to the end! The continuation is already in the next part 👇

The last words were spoken so quietly that I rewound the recording.

“He thinks that he owns at least half of this house,” Grace said. “But I have already taken care of the signature.”

The second man chuckled.

“Are you sure he won’t realize?”

“Justin trusts his own wife. That is exactly why everything is simple.”

I closed the laptop and for several seconds forgot even to breathe. Outside the window the morning city was making noise, while inside the room only the heater’s clicking could be heard. On my table lay the old pen Grace had given me. She had given it to me on our wedding day and told me that I should make important decisions with it.

Now that pen may have been used to sign the documents for selling my house.

I called the lawyer, Elene Kavtaradze, at nine in the morning. Half an hour later I was sitting in her office. The second hand on the clock hanging on the wall moved sharply forward, while Elene listened to the recording and said nothing.

“Is that Grace’s voice?” she asked at last.

“I’ve known her for seven years. I cannot be mistaken in recognizing her voice.”

“Who is the second man?”

I handed her the statement placed in the folder.

“Probably Daniel Reed. Grace’s coworker. The money was transferred to these initials.”

Elene looked at the documents.

“This does not show only betrayal, Justin. It is misappropriation of funds. And if your signature was used without your permission, the matter is much more serious.”

That same evening Grace called me at my new apartment. Only one lamp was turned on in the small kitchen. On the windowsill stood a ceramic cup whose handle was cracked.

“Where are you?” she asked.

“That is no longer your business.”

“Did you receive the folder?”

I felt dryness in my throat.

“Did you send it to me?”

She was silent for several seconds.

“Come back home and I will explain everything.”

“I have already explained everything about the house.”

“Justin, you don’t understand what is happening.”

“Then tell me who you were talking to in the recording.”

Her breathing changed.

“The recording does not exist.”

“Now it does exist.”

!!!  Part 4 — For years, my family did not invite me on vacations, but when they saw my villa, Lea fell silent and her face changed

“Where did you find it?”

“That question is answer enough.”

For the first time Grace lost her composure.

“You have no right to listen to my private conversation!”

“You had no right to transfer our money and use my signature.”

Silence fell on the other side of the line.

Then she said in a whisper:

“Daniel told me that the recording existed only as a backup copy.”

Elene, who was sitting opposite me, immediately raised her head.

“Was Daniel with you?” I asked.

Grace did not answer me.

That night Elene received an additional document from the bank. It showed that, in addition to the transfers, a preliminary contract for the sale of our house had also been prepared. Under the buyer’s name stood the seal of Grace and Daniel’s joint firm.

But the most dangerous thing was written on the last page: to confirm the authenticity of the signature, my father, who had died three years earlier, was listed as a witness.

Elene handed me the sheet.

“This is no longer only a divorce. Tomorrow morning we are going to the police.”

At that moment a message came to my phone from an unknown number.

“If you tell the truth, Grace will not fall alone. You will be accused too.”

The message was accompanied by one photograph: the door of my house, photographed at that very moment…

And beneath the photograph was written: “You still have time to come back.”
