Here is the complete English translation of Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3:
Part 1
My mother-in-law slapped my two-year-old daughter in the face at her birthday party and screamed that she had “defective genetics,” while my husband sat there in silence.
My hand raised on its own. I reached across the table and struck my husband with such force that his glasses fell right into the hot soup. Then I turned to my mother-in-law and shoved her straight into her birthday cake. Red frosting spread across the white tablecloth, and the room fell so dead silent that I could hear a spoon drop onto the floor.
— “You are thirty years old and you still can’t protect your own child!” I screamed at my husband.
My two-year-old girl didn’t cry right away. She pressed her warm face against my neck, her shoulders trembling as if she were cold. Only when we reached the car did I realize how deeply terrified she was. Under the yellow light of the parking lot, I checked her cheek. A red mark was already forming.
— “Grandma got angry,” she told me softly.
Those words proved more painful than my mother-in-law’s insult.
My husband came running out after us. He was no longer wearing his glasses, soup was spilled over his shirt, and he kept looking back toward the hall as if he were most concerned about his mother embedded in the cake, rather than the child shaking in the car.
— “You need to get back inside,” he said. “You humiliated my mother in front of everyone.”
I kept my hand pressed against the car door.
— “Did your mother just strike our child?”
He rubbed his face and let out a sigh.
— “You know how Mom gets when she’s upset.”
That was his answer.
For two years, I had swallowed insult after insult. My mother-in-law criticized how I dressed the child, what I cooked for her, how much I worked, and why my girl pronounced certain words differently. My husband promised every single time that things would change by the next gathering. Whenever I resisted, he told me I had to yield a little for the sake of family peace.
However, a month ago, I had stopped believing him.
I hid copies of key documents in my work bag. I transferred my accumulated savings into a separate account. I packed a small blue bag for the child with a yellow moon drawn on it. I hadn’t planned to leave that night; I was simply prepared for the day my husband would choose his mother’s peace of mind over our child’s safety.
He made his choice in front of everyone.
My friend Mari opened her door the moment I knocked twice. She looked at the child’s cheek, stepped aside, and said only this:
— “You will stay here for as long as you need.”
I laid my girl down in a borrowed T-shirt and sat beside her until her breathing evened out. My phone vibrated continuously on the nightstand. Thirteen messages were waiting from my husband: claiming I had committed violence against his mother, brought shame on the family, frightened the guests, and demanding I return before people drew “wrong conclusions.”
Not once did he ask how our child was doing.
I began typing a reply: “The only wrong conclusion is that this was the first time.” Just then, a new message arrived from his cousin Elene, who had been taking photos near the candles across the table.
“I have the whole video. I think you definitely need to see this.”
I got up from the edge of the bed, clutched the phone in my hand, and tapped the screen to open the video…
Part 2
The video opened, and the first thing I heard was the child’s laughter. My girl stood in front of the cake, her small paper crown tilted slightly to the side, joyfully counting the candles. In the left corner of the frame, my mother-in-law’s hand was visible, bearing a heavy gold ring shaped like a tiny clock instead of a stone.
— “Don’t blow them out yet,” Elene was saying. “Wait for Mommy.”
Then my mother-in-law’s voice cut in:
— “Look how hard it is for her to count. A child like this isn’t raised in a normal family.”
I stepped into the frame and laughed, because I didn’t yet realize where the conversation was heading.
— “Today is her day, Mom,” my husband said.
— “Hers?” My mother-in-law sneered. “It’s your wife’s whim. There’s clearly something wrong with the girl.”
In the video, I watched my husband grip his glass, but say nothing. That exact silence was what I knew best of all.
Then my girl approached my mother-in-law holding a small paper plate.
— “Grandma, do you want some cake?”
My mother-in-law grabbed the child’s wrist.
— “I don’t want anything from you.”
— “Let go of her hand,” I said, moving quickly into the frame.
— “You stay out of this!” she yelled at me. “Your child is as useless as you are.”
My girl got scared and pulled back. My mother-in-law raised her hand. Then came the sound of the strike.
The video didn’t end there.
I screamed, slapped my husband, and shoved my mother-in-law into the cake. Guests surged forward, and someone knocked over a chair. What was most horrific, however, was that amid the noise of the entire hall, my husband’s words echoed clearly:
— “Nino, stop! Don’t talk to Mom like that! Nothing will happen to the kid!”
Elene paused the video.
We were sitting in Mari’s kitchen. Raindrops slammed against the window pane while my girl slept peacefully in the next room. Her frozen image remained on the phone screen.
— “That’s only one recording,” Elene told me. “Do you want me to show you the rest?”
— “There are more?”
— “Several. Your mother-in-law knew phones were recording at that table.”
— “My mother-in-law?”
Elene nodded.
— “She asked me herself to film the candles. She probably thought only you would look bad.”
A cold feeling washed over my stomach. For the first time in two years, I realized my memory hadn’t been deceiving me. Those incidents my husband called “misunderstandings” might not have been accidents at all.
Elene opened a second file. It bore an older date, when my girl was only eleven months old. My mother-in-law was feeding her in a high chair and speaking to the camera:
— “If anyone ever sees this video, we’ll say the daughter-in-law is incapable of caring for the child.”
Then my husband’s voice was heard:
— “Don’t record yet. Let’s not push it to court.”
The word “court” took my breath away.
— “What court was he talking about?” I asked.
Elene lowered her eyes.
— “I don’t know. But along with the video dates, she sent me a few other things.”
She pulled a small folder from her bag. Inside were several printed sheets bearing my husband’s signature.
— “I found these in his office this morning,” Elene said. “His mother thought you wouldn’t get that far.”
My address was written on the first page. The child’s date of birth on the second. On the third was a phrase that made my hands freeze as I read it: “Grounds for removing the child from the mother.”
The phone rang immediately. It was an unknown number.
— “Mrs. Nino,” a man’s calm voice spoke, “I am your husband’s attorney. Tomorrow morning, we will file for temporary custody of the child.”
— “On what grounds?”
— “You assaulted two people at a family event.”
On the other side of the counter, Elene remained silent. For the first time, I felt no fear.
— “Then let’s hear the full recording in court as well,” I replied.
The moment the call ended, Elene took the phone from my hands. Her face went pale.
— “Nino, that wasn’t the only file. In the last recording, your husband says something… something much bigger than striking the child.”
She pressed the file, the audio filled the room, and I heard my husband’s whisper: “If Nino resists us, we’ll take the girl anyway. Mom has already arranged the doctor’s report…”
Elene paused the video and told me she hadn’t seen the next part yet, because the file required a password. Only my husband held that password…
Part 3
Elene transferred the file to a laptop. Only the quiet tapping of the keyboard broke the silence of the room. My girl was murmuring something in her sleep, and every little sound made my heart race.
— “The password might be her birthday,” Elene said.
— “No. He would never use something like that.”
— “Then his mother’s birthday.”
We tried it. A red notification flashed on the screen. We had one attempt left.
Suddenly, I remembered my mother-in-law’s heavy ring, the small watch face detail, and the day my husband told me he had custom-made that ring for his mother during his childhood. I remembered the date precisely, because that was the day we were supposed to start planning our wedding.
Elene typed the numbers.
The file opened.
On screen, my husband sat in his mother’s kitchen. The recording had been made three weeks earlier. Doctor’s forms, official stamps, and copies of the child’s documents were spread across the table.
My mother-in-law asked:
— “Is the doctor ready?”
— “He’s ready,” my husband answered. “He’ll write that the child has serious developmental issues and the mother is neglecting treatment.”
— “And Nino?”
— “We’ll say her emotional state is unstable. She’ll make a scene at the birthday party, as usual.”
My mother-in-law sneered.
— “She played her part well today. If I provoked her once more, she’d hit someone herself.”
My husband nodded.
— “The main thing is that her attack is clearly visible on video. Then the child will be temporarily transferred to us.”
It felt as though the room were closing in around me. In the video, my husband picked up another sheet of paper.
— “I’ll sign this,” he said, “provided you promise not to leave the child alone at your house.”
— “That child is my granddaughter,” my mother-in-law replied. “I’ll decide who she stays with.”
The recording ended.
Elene stared at me, stunned.
— “Nino… this was planned in advance.”
I leaned against the wall. The pain was so overwhelming that I couldn’t even cry.
— “We need to find that doctor’s report,” I said finally, “before they can use it.”
The next morning, I went to see a lawyer. Mari watched the child, while Elene transferred all the recordings onto two separate devices. The attorney, Irakli, watched the video to the end and slowly stood up from his chair.
— “This is no longer just a family dispute,” he said. “This shows pre-planned child removal, a forged medical document, and preparation for perjury.”
— “Can you protect my child?”
— “If we obtain the full file, yes.”
Right then, my husband called me.
— “Come back home,” he said. “Mom is ready to apologize to you.”
— “To the child?”
Silence.
— “Nino, you don’t know what you’re doing. If you don’t come today, we will submit the doctor’s report and the video to the court.”
— “The video that you recorded yourself?”
For the first time, fear crept into his voice.
— “What video are you talking about?”
— “The one where you say you would take my child away from me.”
The call disconnected instantly.
Irakli told me we needed to hand the file over to the police. However, before I could leave the office, Elene received another message. The sender was an unknown number, containing only a single sentence: “If you use this recording, you will find out why his mother wanted to prove the child’s genetic defect.”
Attached below was a laboratory report bearing my husband’s signature. Irakli looked down at the sheet, and his expression shifted dramatically.
— “Nino,” he told me, “this already involves another person’s life. And if I’m guessing correctly, your husband doesn’t know yet that we hold this report…”
