Part 4 — At a Family Dinner, My Husband Put Me to Sleep Again, but When I Opened My Eyes, My Father-in-Law’s Face Turned Strangely Pale

“You realized far too late that this was not only your husband’s affair,” I read aloud.

Everyone in the car fell silent.

Ines immediately called my mother’s number. The call went through, but no one answered. The investigator ordered another team to check the cameras at my mother’s apartment, bank activity, and hospitals.

I held that sheet of paper in my hand. The paper was thin, but in my fingers it seemed heavy like metal.

“Now they want us to think that your mother is with them,” Ines said.

“And what if they really have her?”

“Then we will still get to them first.”

At nine o’clock in the evening, four cars stopped in front of Ernesto’s house. It was no longer raining in the street, but the trees were swaying from the wind as if someone invisible were angrily knocking on the door.

The investigator said into my ear:

“You enter only when I give the signal. Your mother may not be there.”

“May not?”

“We assume nothing completely.”

Mauricio opened the door himself. He was wearing a white shirt, his sleeves were rolled up, and outwardly he still looked calm.

“Valeria,” he said to me. “At last you understood that we need to talk.”

“Where is my mother?”

His face changed for a moment.

“She is safe.”

“Show me.”

“First give me that card.”

“First my mother.”

Mauricio smiled slightly.

“You are still stubborn.”

Something finally broke inside me at those words. For years, I thought I had to preserve his love through fear of losing it. Now, for the first time, I saw that love had never been the main thing for him. The main things were my trust, my signature, and the property he was hiding from me.

“You mixed medicine into my food every day,” I told him.

“Don’t dramatize.”

“Your father took photographs of me while I was unconscious.”

“You don’t understand how you look at such times.”

“You wanted to take my grandmother’s land away from me.”

Mauricio looked away.

“It was a business agreement.”

“An agreement to which I never consented.”

“You would have signed anyway.”

“Why are you so sure?”

His voice became harder.

“Because you always trusted me.”

This time I smiled, though not from happiness.

“That is exactly why you lost.”

The investigator opened the door.

“Mauricio Alvarez, there are grounds against you for intentional poisoning, blackmail, attempted fraud, and illegal threats.”

Mauricio stepped back.

“This is illegal! Valeria, tell them that nothing happened!”

I did not say anything.

Ernesto came out of the living room. He was still wearing that heavy black ring on his hand. Ramiro and Fabiano stood behind him, but confidence could no longer be seen on either of their faces.

“You will not dare,” Ernesto said.

“Mr. Ernesto,” the investigator answered, “everything has already been recorded.”

The laptop was placed on the table.

The sound of my house door was heard in the recorder. Then Ernesto’s voice:

“First the photographs, then her signature.”

In the second recording, Mauricio was saying:

“In the morning she won’t remember anything.”

Mauricio heard his own voice from outside for the first time.

His face emptied.

“It is edited,” he whispered.

“It is a recording extracted from your phone,” Ines said.

Teresa stood on the stairs. She held a kitchen towel in her hand, and her whole body was trembling.

“Ernesto, tell me this is a lie.”

Ernesto looked at her.

“Teresa, go upstairs.”

“You were telling my son to put his wife to sleep?”

“This is our family matter.”

“I was preparing this food,” she said, and the towel fell from her hand. “I did not know that you were mixing medicine into it.”

Mauricio looked at his mother.

“You knew we were doing something.”

Teresa’s face fell apart.

“I thought you were simply forcing her to sign documents.”

These words left a greater silence in the room than all the recordings together.

Just then the investigator received new news. My mother had been found on the other side of the city, at an old friend’s house. Nothing had happened to her. One of Ernesto’s employees had lied to her, saying that I had been in an accident, and taken her to help.

My mother came half an hour later.

As soon as she saw me, she hugged me and hid her face in my hair.

“Why didn’t you tell me that you were so afraid?”

“Because I myself did not believe my fear.”

“Believe it now.”

“Now I know,” I told her.

In the following days, everything developed quickly. The notary gave an official statement. Claudia’s video-camera recording was added to the case. The doctor’s conclusion and the hidden-camera footage confirmed that Mauricio had been adding the medicine, while Ernesto had been directing everything.

Ramiro refused the deal and handed his own messages to the investigators. Fabiano admitted that the photographs were supposed to be used for blackmail. Teresa began living separately and also signed a statement.

Mauricio’s lawyer called me the next day.

“Mrs. Valeria, my client is ready for an agreement.”

“What are you offering?”

“He will return the property rights to you and apologize if you withdraw the complaint.”

“No.”

“Think about it. The trial will be long.”

“I have already lived three years in a lie. A few months do not seem too high a price for the truth.”

“Your husband loves you.”

“Love does not leave a person unconscious and then steal her signature.”

The lawyer sighed.

“Then I can no longer defend him.”

“That is your choice.”

Several weeks later, Mauricio addressed me for the first time in the courtroom. He was not wearing handcuffs, but two guards stood beside him.

“Valeria, look at me.”

I looked at him.

“Do you remember our first dinner?”

“I remember.”

“I never wanted to destroy you.”

“But you were ready for me to lose myself.”

He lowered his head.

Then I reminded him of the recording in which his voice could be heard. The judge read his words aloud. Mauricio heard his own voice again, and this time he could no longer say that it was edited.

“In the morning she won’t remember anything.”

His fingers trembled on the table.

And for the first time, I no longer felt the desire to explain anything to him.

Justice did not come with noise. It came as documents, examinations, testimonies, and a calm refusal.

Six months later, I moved into a small apartment in the part of the city where the smell of a bakery rose through the stairwells in the morning. At first, I had difficulty falling asleep alone. I opened my eyes at every sound. I checked the lock twice.

Then, little by little, I changed.

At work, I was put in charge of a new department. I investigated financial fraud, and for the first time I felt that my profession was not only counting numbers. Sometimes numbers helped a person get her life back.

My mother came every Saturday. We drank tea together. Ines joked that now, in every restaurant, she first checked the menu herself and then my plate.

One morning, little Daniel, my sister’s son, sat at the table with pencils and drew a house on a sheet of paper.

!!!  Part 4 — When my ex-husband looked at my twins in the restaurant, he could not take a step and his wife lost her smile

“This is your new house,” he told me.

“Why doesn’t it have a fence?”

“Because no one is locked in here.”

The words struck me so strongly that I pressed the paper to my chest.

The first winter of that year arrived. In the morning, I saw a thin white layer on the windowsill. I made coffee in the kitchen, checked the door, and locked it only once.

Then I received a new message on my phone.

Mauricio wrote: “Today is the final decision in court. If you come, I will explain everything to you. Maybe we can start over.”

I looked at the screen for several minutes.

Earlier, a message like this would have completely ruined my day. But now I went to the window and attached Daniel’s drawing to the refrigerator.

I sent back only one sentence:

“I am not starting over—I am moving forward.”

I turned off the phone.

I took out of the closet the blouse whose buttons had first been fastened differently by foreign hands. I never wore it again. I kept it in a small wooden box, as evidence of the woman who once did not even trust her own mind.

That evening I opened the window. Cold air came in. Outside, children were trampling snow with their feet and running away laughing.

I touched the buttons of the blouse with my fingers, then closed the box and left the key in my new home.

This time, I locked the door myself.

From the inside.
