My Fiancée Accused Me at Home, but One Recording by the Children Erased Her Calm Smile in Seconds

The moment I heard my six-year-old daughter’s voice in the hallway, I realized that returning home was the hardest decision of my life.

In San Pedro Garza García, I quietly got out of the car at the back door of our house and gestured to the driver to wait far away. I had left my suitcase four days earlier, hugged the children, and told them I was going to Mexico on business. Sofia asked me to return by Sunday. Renata tied her little pink bracelet to the sleeve of my jacket.

“So you will not forget me on the way, Daddy.”

I smiled at her, although there was a heavy stone in my heart.

The trip was a lie.

For three weeks, Lorena had been insisting that Elena Morales, the woman who had been in charge of caring for my house and the girls after Isabel’s death, was stealing money, hiding things, and speaking badly about me in front of the children. At first I did not believe her. Elena had been with us for six years. She knew that Sofia’s tooth hurt at night, that Renata ate with her left hand, and that she could not stand having the glass placed on the right side.

But Lorena invented a new story every day.

“This woman is taking your place in your own house,” she told me one evening, standing by the kitchen window and nervously turning a silver spoon. “If you really plan to marry me, you must fire Elena.”

“Without proving any wrongdoing?”

“You are still defending her.”

Tears appeared in her eyes. And I, tired and confused, felt for the first time that perhaps I really had missed something.

That night I decided to pretend that I was leaving town. The next evening I made one circuit with the driver and returned home through the garden gate. The iron handle was cold. I felt its scratch on my palm, and a strange fear took hold of me.

I entered the hallway on tiptoe.

Elena’s voice could be heard from the living room.

“Now taste it, little girl.”

A corn cake lay on the table. Elena was cutting Sofia’s piece into small cubes because the child’s tooth still hurt. Renata’s glass had been moved to the right side so she would not knock it over with her left elbow. Then she washed the strawberries again because Renata had said they tasted like the refrigerator.

“Is it good now?” Elena asked.

Renata swallowed one bite and raised her thumb.

“Very good!”

I heard Sofia laugh. I had not heard that laugh for months. I stood in the shadow of the door, and shame grew inside me.

“Elena, will you sit with us on my birthday?” Renata asked.

“I am here to work, sweetheart.”

“No,” Sofia put down her fork. “You will sit in the middle. Like family.”

Elena lowered her head to hide her wet eyes.

Then I realized that Lorena had been in our lives for almost a year, but did not know that Renata drew with her left hand. Elena knew Isabel’s favorite song, the exact recipe for the chocolate cake, and all the girls’ nighttime fears.

Suddenly Sofia lowered her voice.

“Elena, is it true that Lorena told you to find another job?”

Elena’s hand froze on the plate.

“That is an adults’ matter, sweetheart.”

“She also said that Daddy would fire you because you stole her bracelet,” Renata added.

I clenched my fists so hard that my fingernails cut into my skin.

Sofia looked toward the hallway and saw me.

“Daddy, why are you hiding?” Her face went pale. Then she exhaled strangely. “It is good that you came back… I have a recording of Lorena. She put the bracelet into Elena’s apron herself.”

Renata put her hand on the small device hidden under the chair. I took a step toward her, while Elena looked directly at me for the first time. The sound of a lock came from Lorena’s room, and at that same moment I reached my hand toward the recording…

My fingers touched the small device, but I could not pick it up until Sofia grabbed my wrist.

“Do not listen to it here yet, Daddy,” she whispered. “Lorena may come in again.”

Her voice was trembling. A six-year-old child was acting as though the safety of the entire house rested on her shoulders.

Elena picked up a glass from the table. A small crack was visible on its rim, one that reminded me of Isabel every time I did something in the house. Elena carefully put the glass down and asked me:

“Rodrigo, why are you here?”

“Because I could not wait four more days.”

“What were you waiting for?”

There was more resentment than fear in her question. I could not answer.

At that moment footsteps came down from upstairs. Lorena appeared on the stairs. She was wearing a white robe, holding the keys to my suitcase in her hand, and had such a calm smile on her face, as if I were not a man returning home but an unexpected guest whom I had found.

“Rodrigo?” she said. “Tell me that I misunderstood something.”

“I want to understand the same thing.”

“You were leaving town.”

“And now I have returned.”

Lorena looked first at the children, then at Elena. Her eyes stopped on the device for a moment.

“This woman is using the children to influence you.”

Sofia pressed her lips together.

“We heard for ourselves what you said.”

“Were you in the room when I was talking to Elena?”

“Behind the wardrobe.”

Renata immediately added:

“I was standing by the curtain.”

Lorena’s smile disappeared, but only for a second. Then she knelt and came closer to them.

“My darlings, you misunderstood something. I only wanted to make sure Elena did nothing bad to you.”

“Then why did you put the bracelet in her apron?” Sofia asked.

Such silence fell over the room that I heard every tick of the clock on the kitchen wall.

Lorena’s fingers went pale.

“I did not put anything there.”

“Your voice is on the recording,” I said.

“The recording may have been altered.”

“By whom? Six-year-old children?”

Elena turned toward me.

“That day was the first time I saw the bracelet in my apron. I put it on your desk. The next morning Lorena frightened me with the police.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

“I called you. You told me that you could not hear one more accusation from me.”

Those words struck me in the chest. It was true. That evening I had ended her call because I was listening to Lorena’s tears.

Lorena stepped toward me.

“You are tired now. You came home and confused everything.”

“No, Lorena. You confused everything.”

She picked up the phone from the table and showed me the screen. There were messages sent in Elena’s name, in which she supposedly threatened me and planned to take the girls away.

“Here is the evidence,” she said. “Will you also say that I created this?”

Elena looked at the messages and lost the color in her face.

“Those are not my words.”

“The phone number is yours,” I replied.

“A number can be stolen.”

At that moment the doorbell rang. My lawyer, Mateo Valdés, stood in the yard. I had only messaged him to come back to the house and bring all the documents my auditor had collected in recent months.

Mateo entered the room holding a brown folder, and his expression changed as soon as he looked at Lorena.

“Rodrigo, I need to speak with you alone.”

“Everyone stays here.”

He put the folder on the table. Elena’s name was written on it, but another signature was visible below. Lorena saw it and stepped back.

“We were supposed to use this document tomorrow,” Mateo said. “But now it is already too late.”

“What document is it?” I asked.

Mateo opened the clasp. Lorena suddenly shouted:

“Do not open it!”

Her voice was so desperate that my fear turned into real suspicion for the first time. Mateo took a thin sheet from the folder, placed his finger on it, and told me:

“First you must know this: everything they told you against Elena was only the beginning. And the next recording shows why Lorena needed your marriage at any cost…”

A car engine started behind the door. Lorena looked toward the window, as if she had already prepared an escape route…

Lorena moved toward the window, but Mateo stood in her way at the door.

“Do not leave,” he told her. “It is better for your safety too.”

“No one can forbid me from leaving my house,” Lorena replied.

“This is not your house.”

His answer fell into the room like a heavy stone. The children moved closer to Elena, while I stood in front of the folder. A red stain of strawberry juice remained on the wooden surface. It was as though an ordinary family evening still existed, although everything had already been shattered.

“Tell me what it says,” I told Mateo.

He unfolded the sheet.

“This is a statement written three days before Isabel’s death. It was certified by a notary. She knew that Lorena was trying to get close to you.”

Lorena gave a short laugh, but the laugh caught in her throat.

“This is absurd. A dead woman could not have planned everything.”

“She was dead, but the signature and date are living evidence,” Mateo said.

I recognized Isabel’s handwriting on the sheet. Her letters were slightly slanted, especially in the word “girls.” My fingers went cold.

Mateo continued:

“Isabel wrote that if her death was followed by any suspicious circumstances, Elena was to protect the children. She also stated that only you had access to the family accounts and that Lorena was to have neither legal nor financial rights.”

“I have never seen this letter,” I whispered.

“Because Isabel asked me to give it to you only if someone accused Elena or separated the children from her.”

Lorena leaned against a chair.

“You planned this with both of them?”

“I planned nothing,” Mateo replied. “I was simply fulfilling the obligation I made to your deceased wife.”

Sofia put the small device on the table.

“Now let us listen to our recording.”

I pressed the button. First the children’s whispers were heard, then the creak of the door and Lorena’s voice.

“Put the bracelet in the apron. In the morning I will say that Elena stole it. Rodrigo will no longer defend her.”

!!!  4. RÉSZ — Négy évig spóroltam az otthonomra, de apám egyetlen mozdulattal az utcára lökött — aztán elsápadt

Elena’s frightened breathing could be heard in the recording.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because you have to leave this house. I want to marry Rodrigo and manage his property. If you get in my way, I will separate you from the children too.”

Elena covered her mouth with both hands. Sofia lowered her eyes. Renata hid her head in my arm.

Lorena’s face became gray.

“It is only a conversation.”

“You said it yourself,” I told her.

“I was angry.”

“Did you also write the false messages?” Mateo asked.

He opened a second folder and took out the phone records.

“The messages were sent from Lorena’s tablet, at the same time she was in Elena’s room. We also have a camera recording showing her taking the bracelet from my office and hiding it in Elena’s apron.”

For the first time Lorena could say nothing.

I looked at her and realized that for almost a year I had been looking not at a real person, but at the face I myself wanted to see.

“Why, Lorena?” I asked.

“You were alone. I helped you.”

“You used my loneliness.”

At that moment Mateo’s phone rang. He listened, lowered his eyes, and ended the call.

“Rodrigo, the bank has confirmed that a large amount was withdrawn from your company’s reserve account this morning. The transfer was made from the same device that belongs to Lorena.”

Lorena raised her head.

“That is impossible.”

Mateo turned the screen toward her.

“And the money was sent to an account belonging to your brother.”

Lorena’s lips parted, but no word came out.

I thought I had already understood everything. In fact, at that moment a new danger was born: the money was gone, while my company’s documents were in Lorena’s hands. Mateo told me that before the bank stopped the transfer, Lorena could take one more step.

Lorena took a phone from her bag and looked at the screen. She read a message, then turned toward me.

“Rodrigo, if you call the police now, you may lose the children forever.”

“What do you mean?”

She looked toward the door.

“You do not yet know who signed the guardianship statement for the girls…”

And that was when I realized that Lorena was not merely trying to escape from the house. She had already prepared a way to take my children away from me…
