Part 4 — My Fiancée Accused Me at Home, but One Recording by the Children Erased Her Calm Smile in Seconds

After Lorena’s last words, such silence descended on the house that it seemed all the clocks had stopped at once.

I took Elena’s hand.

“The girls are with me. No one will take them.”

“You cannot decide that,” Lorena said. “The statement says that you are emotionally unstable and often leave the children in the care of a strange woman.”

“A strange woman?” Elena’s voice hardened for the first time. “I have raised them for six years.”

Mateo took out his phone.

“The statement is false. The signature was forged, and the document has not yet been submitted to any court.”

Lorena looked at him.

“You prepared everything in advance?”

“Isabel prepared it. I only protected her wishes.”

Then Lorena’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and lost color in her face.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“My brother.”

“Answer.”

“I can’t.”

“Answer, Lorena.”

She turned on the call. A worried man’s voice sounded in the room.

“The money is gone. The bank blocked the account. What do we do?”

Lorena fell silent.

“Answer me!” her brother shouted. “You said everything was under control!”

Lorena slowly ended the call.

For the first time I heard her voice from the outside, through someone else’s ears. The very same calm promises she had been telling me for months now sounded like lies emptied of fear.

Mateo called the police.

Lorena went to the door.

“Rodrigo, give me ten minutes. I will return the money.”

“You cannot return trust.”

“I love you.”

“You wanted my house, my accounts, and custody of the children. You cannot call that love.”

“You do not know what you are saying.”

“Now I know very well.”

The police cars stopped in the yard a few minutes later. Lorena did not hold out her hands, did not shout, and did not shed tears. She simply stood there and tried to appear once again as the woman everyone trusted.

But the camera recording, the children’s device, the bank data, and Isabel’s statement had already become one complete truth.

!!!  At the military ceremony they did not even leave a chair for me, but the general stopped behind the fence and my father’s face suddenly turned pale

Her brother was arrested the next morning for financial fraud. Lorena was charged with attempted misappropriation of property, document forgery, and falsely accusing Elena. I did not go to court against her out of revenge. I only told the truth.

At the first hearing, she did not raise her head.

The judge played the recording.

“Put the bracelet in the apron. In the morning I will say that Elena stole it.”

Those words sounded through the room again.

Lorena heard her own voice. She covered her face with her hand and realized for the first time that she could not say, “I did not say that.”

She had said it.

Yet something else turned out to be the hardest thing for me.

After Lorena left, I left her room empty. Only one thing remained on the bed: a silver hair clip that had been forgotten beside the bathroom mirror. The curtains moved slightly, her perfume was no longer in the wardrobe, but on the floor I found the little recording that Sofia had hidden.

I picked it up and turned it over in my hand for a long time.

I realized that this was not only the truth saved by the children. It was their attempt to bring their father back.

In the following weeks many calls came in.

From the bank.

From the police.

From the lawyer.

From Lorena’s family.

Her brother offered me an agreement in exchange for returning the money. I refused.

Lorena’s lawyer told me:

“If you change your testimony, Mrs. Alcázar may receive a lighter punishment.”

“I am changing nothing,” I replied. “Truth is not a weapon. But neither is it something to hide.”

Three months later, the decision in Lorena’s case was announced. She was sentenced to prison, while her brother faced additional financial charges. The company was returned to me, but I no longer wanted to return to my old life.

!!!  Part 4 — I Fell Powerlessly to the Ground with Three Children, but When the Ranch Owner Saw the Medallion, the Color Drained from His Face

I sold half of the house in San Pedro and moved with the girls to a quiet neighborhood in Monterrey. There, mountains could be seen from the window in the mornings, and in the kitchen Elena was still baking corn cake.

“Whose piece should I cut now?” she asked.

Sofia smiled.

“Daddy needs a small piece too. He still eats slowly when he is nervous.”

Renata drew with her left hand at the table. Her new drawing showed four people at one table, with a big yellow sun in the middle. In the corner she had drawn a small pink bracelet.

“This is you, Daddy,” she told me. “Now you will not leave without saying goodbye to us.”

“Never again,” I told her.

Autumn came.

I established new rules at the company, divided access to the accounts between two people, and no longer hid cameras in the house. Trust cannot return through control. It is built through small daily truths.

I gave Elena official guardianship status. At first she refused.

“I was receiving a salary, Rodrigo.”

“You were taking care of a family.”

“A family is not created by a contract.”

“That is exactly why I want you to make this choice yourself.”

She thought for several days and finally signed.

That evening the girls organized a small celebration in the kitchen. Sofia wrote the letters on the cake incorrectly, while Renata spilled cream on the floor. For the first time in a long while, I laughed out loud.

Four months later I received a letter from Lorena. The envelope was not gray, nor was it special. It was ordinary white paper, with a prison stamp in the corner.

“Rodrigo, I know that I destroyed everything. When you get out, I want you to listen to me at least once. I can still explain it to you.”

I put the letter on the kitchen table.

Sofia looked at me.

“Will you answer?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I looked at the first snowflakes through the window.

“Because I have already heard her explanation. I heard it in her own voice.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Vater schob mich vom Festtagstisch und nannte mich nutzlos – dann sah er in die blaue Mappe und verstummte

Lorena kept trying to reach me. She called from a mutual acquaintance’s phone, and then sent me a message through a lawyer.

“You can put everything back.”

I gave a short answer:

“I do not want to go back anymore. The girls are well. I wish you to someday remain at peace with your own decisions.”

After that I turned off the phone.

That night Sofia put the small recording device on my desk. She had removed the batteries.

“We do not need it anymore,” she told me.

“Why?”

“Now you trust us.”

Renata handed me her pink bracelet. The one she had tied to my sleeve when I left and that I had carried with me for four days.

“You will not forget this anymore, Daddy.”

I hung the bracelet on the window handle. In the morning light, the pink beads glittered like little fires.

That day the snow began to fall more heavily.

I returned to the kitchen, where the children were laughing and Elena was cutting the cake.

The little pink bracelet was no longer a promise that I would not forget.

It was a sign that I had already returned home.

Missed the beginning?
