Part 4 — Five Years Later, My Ex-Husband Humiliated Me at a Wedding, but the Sight of a Little Girl Suddenly Erased His Smile

The voice from Julian’s phone could still be heard when everyone in the room fell silent.

Marcus’s father, Arthur, was in a secured room in a private clinic on the other side of the city. He had collapsed from a heart attack several weeks earlier, and until now everyone had thought that he could not say anything.

But now he was speaking.

“The file is with me,” his hoarse voice sounded. “And Marcus does not know that its copy also belongs to Evelyn.”

Marcus snatched the phone.

“Father, be quiet!”

Arthur laughed. It was a weak but sharp laugh.

“For the first time in your life, are you telling me when to be quiet?”

The lawyer placed a hand on Marcus’s shoulder.

“Do not answer this call anymore.”

“You are my lawyer!” Marcus shouted.

“From this minute on, I am not,” the man replied, picking up his bag from the table. “You concealed advice from me, concealed the forged signatures from me, and now you are trying to intimidate witnesses. My name will no longer be in such a case.”

Marcus lunged toward him, but Julian stood in front of him.

“One more step and I will call security.”

Marcus lowered his hand.

Chloe stood by the wall, as though she were seeing for the first time the person with whom she had spent five years. Her diamond earring trembled.

“Tell me that everything is a lie,” she said to him quietly.

“Chloe…”

“Tell me!”

Julian played the recording from the beginning.

Marcus’s voice sounded in the room again: “Evelyn understands nothing. Let’s empty the joint account, then I’ll say that she squandered the money herself.”

This time the recording sounded different. It was as though the voice came not from Marcus but from outside and showed his true face.

Marcus covered his ears with his hands.

“Turn it off!”

“Those are your words,” I told him.

He looked at me.

“I was angry then.”

!!!  I found my first love freezing in Central Park with three babies, and when my mother saw them, her smile vanished

“For five years?”

He could not answer.

Before leaving for the clinic, Julian asked the security guard not to let Emma into the room. The girl was in kindergarten that day. And I felt for the first time how close Marcus had come to my new life.

We entered Arthur’s room in the evening. An oxygen machine stood by the window, and its monitor made a monotonous sound. A small wooden box lay beside the bed.

Arthur looked toward me.

“This should have been given to you five years ago.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I preferred my son to the truth. It was my greatest mistake.”

He opened the box. Inside was the company founders’ agreement, which stated that if Marcus deceived members of the family, the controlling share would automatically pass to an independent trust. I was the trust’s sole supervisor.

Marcus no longer owned the company.

The next morning his phone could not keep up with the calls. The bank froze the accounts. Investors canceled meetings. The tax service demanded the audit materials. Chloe took suitcases out of the house and went to her mother.

I answered none of the calls.

But Marcus still found a way to reach me. He sent me a voice message.

“Evelyn, everything can be fixed. You do not want Emma to grow up without a father, do you? Let’s talk.”

The second message was quieter.

“I only wanted to protect the money.”

The third was the old Marcus again.

“If you go to court, I will hurt you too.”

I handed the phone to Julian.

“Save it.”

“You don’t want to answer?”

“No. For the first time I want my silence to truly be mine.”

A week later, an official case was opened against Marcus for financial fraud, use of forged documents, and an attempt to intimidate a witness.

I went to court, but I was not there to watch his defeat. I went only so that the truth could stand completely.

!!!  A férjem megtagadta tőlem az évfordulós ajándékot, aztán valaki felhívta az anyját, és az arca hirtelen elsápadt

Marcus saw me in the courtroom and looked at me for a long time.

“You had all this from the beginning?” he asked.

“No. At the beginning I had only the truth.”

“Then why didn’t you destroy me?”

“Because destroying you was not my life.”

His eyes reddened.

“If Julian had not appeared, you would still be alone.”

“Julian is not my savior. He became the person beside whom I am no longer afraid of myself.”

Marcus lowered his head.

When I returned home after court, I entered Emma’s room. Her drawing hung on the wall: four figures, a yellow sun, and a little house with a red roof. One figure was me. The second was named Julian. Below, in Emma’s childish letters, she had written: “We live here.”

I put the things left by Marcus into one box. His old key, two letters, and the black napkin taken from the wedding. I did not put my old leather wallet among those things. It was still with me.

Months passed.

The first snow came to Boston. Every morning Emma stood by the window and waited for the white layer to cover the yard. Julian made pancakes in the kitchen, while I checked accounts for my new consulting service.

Now I chose my own clients.

I no longer allowed anyone to make my work invisible.

One evening Emma curled up in my lap.

“Mommy, is Marcus-father still angry?”

The child’s question passed through my heart lightly, but painfully.

“Probably,” I said. “But that is his feeling and his responsibility.”

“Will you forgive him?”

Small snowflakes clung to the window glass.

“Maybe someday I will forgive him, but that does not mean I will let him into my house again.”

Emma thought for a while.

“So you can forgive someone and still keep the door closed?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Then let’s leave the door closed.”

Several weeks later, Marcus sent me his last letter. It was short. He wrote that he was beginning treatment, that Chloe had left, that his father had died peacefully, and that no one had come to his funeral.

!!!  Soacra mea mi-a pus ceva în ceai, iar când am pornit înregistrarea, soțul meu a încetat să mai zâmbească

At the end, there was only one sentence: “Could you speak to me at least once as you did before?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote to him:

“Before, I was losing myself when I spoke with you. Now I do not want to go back. I wish that someday you learn to carry the person you yourself created.”

I wrote nothing more.

Julian did not ask me what I was feeling. He simply took my hand.

Emma was sitting on the floor and adding a new detail to her drawing—a small yellow door that locked from the inside.

That night I put my old leather wallet in the drawer. The copper-colored memory card was still inside, although I no longer needed it. It was no longer proof of my fear.

It became proof that once, when everyone thought I had lost, I saved my own truth.

I closed the drawer.

Outside, snow was falling.

And for the first time in my life, a closed door no longer resembled a prison. It was a home.

Missed the beginning?
