I was still holding the pregnancy result in the doctor’s office when, returning home, I found my own suitcase at the door, with divorce papers placed on top. I had waited eleven years for this day. I had lost five pregnancies, undergone dozens of examinations, and every month buried hope as if I were attending a small, invisible funeral. And now I could still hear the doctor’s voice: “Congratulations, Madeline. You are pregnant.”
I placed my hand on my stomach. Almost nothing was visible yet, but I knew there was life there. I entered the house and saw Ryan in the living room. A young woman in a raspberry-colored silk dress was sitting calmly on the sofa. Her hand rested on her enlarged belly. Ryan’s mother stood behind them with an expression as if she had been waiting all day for my expulsion.
“What does this mean?” I asked.
Ryan did not look me in the eyes.
“It’s all over, Madeline.”
“Today? You decided exactly today?”
His mother took a pen from the table. A small black horse was engraved on the top of the silver pen. Years ago, I had given that pen to Ryan when our first treatment began.
“Ryan needs an heir,” she told me coldly. “Eleven years is enough. Don’t make scenes.”
My fingers involuntarily reached my stomach. The woman in the raspberry-colored dress noticed this and slightly raised the corner of her lips.
“You’d better leave,” she told me. “Stress is not good for my baby.”
Ryan remained silent. His silence hurt me more than any insult.
“Ryan, at least once look at me and tell me that all this is true.”
He raised his head.
“Just sign. Don’t humiliate yourself.”
With six words I could have destroyed the whole room. “I am carrying your child, Ryan.” These words rose to my throat, but I did not say them. He had already assigned my dream to someone else’s womb. Why should I give him a miracle that did not yet exist for him?
I took the papers. The suitcase handle cut into my fingers. At the threshold, Ryan’s mother quietly told me:
“Don’t think that you will ever be able to return to this family.”
I did not look back.
I walked until evening. At the edge of the city, by an abandoned road, my strength ran out and I collapsed beside a large black car. The rain had not yet begun, but the air smelled of iron and wet asphalt. I buried my face in my hands and for the first time allowed myself to cry aloud.
“I am pregnant,” I whispered. “I have been abandoned. And I don’t know where to go.”
The quiet sound of an engine came from the car. Then the dark window slowly lowered.
A man was sitting inside. About fifty years old, with a severe face and honey-colored eyes. He watched me for several seconds, as if he had been searching for my face for a long time.
“Madeline Hart?” he asked me.
I stood up, but my legs began to tremble.
“Who are you?”
He opened the door and got out of the car. He held a small leather folder. A silver star was engraved in the corner of the folder.
“I am the man,” he said, “whom your husband thought he had silenced forever.”
He extended the folder toward me. My hand moved toward it, but before my fingers touched the clasp…
“First you must know that this child is not Ryan’s only secret…”
My hand stopped on the folder’s clasp. The first raindrop fell on the leather surface at that very moment.
“Tell me your name,” I said.
“Daniel Morgan.”
The name seemed familiar to me. I had once seen it in Ryan’s old documents, but my husband had told me then that he was only a former business partner.
“Why are you helping me?”
Daniel looked toward the end of the road.
“Because your husband thought he had taken everything. The money. The company. The truth.”
“What connection do you have with Ryan?”
He did not open the folder.
“More than you imagine. Now get into the car. Staying here is dangerous.”
“How can I believe your words?”
Daniel took out his phone and turned the screen toward me. Ryan’s name, a date, and the clinic’s address were visible there.
“Tomorrow morning we will go to this clinic. There you will learn why you could never maintain a pregnancy and why today’s result became so dangerous for them.”
My heart clenched.
“What are you saying?”
He told me only this:
“Your husband never needed a child. He only needed your silence…”
I opened the car door. I still did not know whether Daniel was a savior or a new trap. But that night I had no choice anymore. I got in.
And when the car started moving, my phone rang. Ryan’s number appeared on the screen…
I looked at the phone, but did not answer. The call ended and a message came immediately: “If you tell anyone about the child, you will regret it.”
Daniel saw the screen. His jaw tightened.
“Do you believe now that this is not simply a divorce?”
“Tell me everything.”
In the morning we entered through the clinic’s underground entrance. The sharp smell of disinfectant stood in the corridor, while a clock on the wall ticked continuously. Daniel opened a door and led me into a small meeting room. A woman in a white coat was sitting there, her hands folded over one another.
“This is Dr. Elena Weiss,” Daniel said. “She was your doctor eleven years ago.”
The woman lowered her eyes.
“Madeline, forgive me.”
“For what?”
The doctor placed several documents on the table. She took the papers from a yellow folder with a red seal in the corner.
“Your five pregnancies did not end naturally,” she said. “In the samples you submitted, a substance that prevents the continuation of pregnancy was found every time.”
The air disappeared from the room.
“That is impossible. I took all the medicines myself.”
“Exactly,” Elena replied. “Your husband gave you the supplements, vitamins, and sedatives. The laboratory archive shows that some of the samples had been replaced. The signatures had also been changed.”
Daniel took a small memory device from the folder and placed it on the table.
“These are recordings from the clinic’s old cameras. Ryan came here every time before you submitted your analysis.”
Ryan appeared on the screen. He was young, but his eyes looked with the same cold gaze. In the recording he was telling the doctor:
“Madeline must not find out. As long as she considers herself guilty, she will not dare leave me.”
I clung to the chair. The wooden edge dug into my fingers.
“Why?” I barely said. “Why did he do this to me?”
Daniel exhaled.
“Because your family’s company had been left in your name. Ryan thought that if you could not have a child, he would make you lose everything in the divorce and take possession of the property. But there was one thing he did not know.”
“What?”
Dr. Elena took out another sheet.
“Your pregnancy today is real. And according to the sample, the child’s father is Ryan.”
My knees lost their strength.
Daniel added quietly:
“His mistress is not pregnant. It was all staged to throw you out of the house before you discovered your pregnancy.”
A powerful удар sounded from outside the door.
Then Ryan’s voice was heard throughout the room:
“Madeline, open the door! You have no idea whom you trust!”
Daniel looked at his phone and his face changed.
“This call is not from the clinic,” he said. “The police just called me. Ryan reported me missing and stated that I was bringing you by force.”
Someone knocked on the door once more. This time a woman was crying.
“Daniel, open the door! I know where the main document is!”
Daniel looked toward me.
“That is his mother. And if she has come here, it means Ryan still has not told her who really owns the property for which he destroyed your life…”
The door lock slowly turned…
