My wife demanded to return to my daughter’s wedding, but her smile disappeared when opening the gift

Three weeks before the wedding, Chloe wrote to me that she would definitely come, because she could not explain to her new family why she would miss her own daughter’s happy day. At that moment I was standing in the kitchen, holding a cup of cold coffee, and I could not believe that after fifteen years her first words were not regret, but fear of someone else’s opinion.

I am Luka, and I remember everything about that night. Our youngest, Jessie, was nine months old and was sleeping on my chest. The other five girls stood in the hallway and watched their mother drag suitcases toward the door. Chloe did not even lower her voice.

“You could not give me the life I wanted,” she told me.

“The children are here, Chloe.”

“Let them hear. Daniel can give me that. He bought me a car, took me to the Caribbean islands. I deserve a life like that.”

Daniel was her boss. Later I found out that he had also been her lover for months.

Chloe slammed the door so hard that Jessie woke up on my chest. There was a milk stain on her little striped sock. For some reason, that insignificant detail was imprinted in my memory forever that night.

Then the next fifteen years belonged only to the six of us. I worked double shifts at a warehouse, and at night I returned home and learned everything I had not known before: how to braid hair without hurting anyone; how to remove the crust from a sandwich; how to sit by the bathroom door of a feverish child until two in the morning; how to clap at all six concerts even when my eyes were closing.

We had little money. But the girls always knew that someone would come for them.

At the age of twenty-four, Jessie announced her engagement. The wedding was to be held in a club on the outskirts of Columbus, decorated with white lights. We would have one hundred and fifty guests.

I showed Chloe’s message to Jessie and prepared myself for tears. She read it twice, put the phone on the table, and smiled at me in a way I could not understand.

“Tell her to come, Dad.”

“Jessie, you are not obliged…”

“I know. That is exactly why I want her to come.”

“What are you planning to do?”

She placed her finger on a small paper card set under the glass. We had made this card fifteen years earlier, on Jessie’s first birthday. On the paper, in childishly crooked letters, it said: “Mom, I was waiting for you today too.”

“I prepared a welcome gift,” Jessie said.

!!!  Me obligaron a ponerme una correa frente a la prisión, pero al llegar a la mansión alguien dejó de sonreír

On the wedding day Chloe arrived late. She was wearing a sparkling dress, enormous glasses covered her eyes, and in her hand she held such an expensive bag that it seemed she expected the guests to measure her by its price.

She went straight into the bride’s room.

“My beautiful girl! At last!” she shouted and theatrically hugged Jessie.

I stood by the door and was still holding that little card. The edge of the paper rubbed against my finger.

Chloe looked around the room and said quietly, but loudly enough:

“I hope now you will finally understand why I left. Your father was poor and lazy. He could not give me the life I deserved.”

The girls stopped moving at the same time. And an old wound opened in my heart.

Jessie looked at her mother for a long time.

“Of course, Mom,” she answered at last.

A victorious smile appeared on Chloe’s face.

“Actually, I have something for you,” Jessie added.

Chloe beamed even more.

A few minutes later Jessie led her into the hall. The conversation slowly stopped when two employees rolled in a large wooden box. The box was wrapped with a silver ribbon. Beside it stood our old kitchen chair, on whose back I had marked the girls’ heights for years.

Jessie took the microphone.

“Mom, you missed many birthdays,” she said. “So my sisters and I saved something every year.”

For the first time Chloe’s smile faltered.

“What nonsense?”

“Open it.”

Chloe put her hand on the lid. The silver ribbon swayed in the hall. And I realized that there were not only things in this box. Fifteen years of silence were locked inside it.

Chloe lifted the lid and looked inside. The woman standing behind her covered her mouth with her hand. Someone put down a glass, and the sharp sound of glass cut through the hall.

Chloe stepped back and hit the chair.

“Oh my God…”

Her glasses fell to the floor.

“How did you obtain this?” she asked, already trembling.

Jessie looked toward me, then turned toward the one hundred and fifty guests.

“You told everyone that Dad did not let you come to us,” she said. “But Dad knew nothing about these things.”

She put her hand into the box and took out the first bundle. Chloe reached toward it, but Jessie shook her head.

“Now everyone will learn what we knew…”

Jessie opened the bundle. They were letters that had been sent for years to Chloe’s new home address and returned. On every envelope was the same red stamp: “The recipient refused delivery.”

!!!  Meu irmão alugou o escritório que eu possuía secretamente, mas ao ver a escritura nas mãos da minha irmã, seu sorriso desapareceu

“This is impossible,” Chloe whispered.

“No, Mom,” Jessie said. “The only impossible thing was for you to think we would stay silent forever.”

She took out the second bundle. Inside were small photographs taken on the day when all six sisters stood by the post office. In each photograph they held one letter in their hands.

I was seeing them for the first time. It was as if the floor had been pulled out from under my heart.

“Why did you not tell me?” I asked the girls.

My eldest daughter, Lena, lowered her eyes.

“You were already doing everything for us, Dad. We did not want to add another pain to you.”

Chloe walked toward the door.

“This is a staged scene!” she shouted.

“Then why is your signature on every envelope?” Jessie asked calmly.

Chloe stopped.

At that moment the back door of the hall opened and an unfamiliar woman entered with a black folder. Jessie nodded to her.

The woman opened the folder and took out the first sheet.

“Before anyone leaves here, you must know what happened on the night Chloe left…”

The woman introduced herself as Marina, the family lawyer. In her hand she held not only a folder, but also a thin, scratched plastic recording transferred from an old tape.

“The six girls brought all this to me several years ago,” she said. “I asked them not to tell Luka until I established the full picture.”

“You conspired against me!” Chloe shouted.

Jessie raised her head calmly.

“No. We prepared against your lie.”

Marina placed the first sheet on the table. It was a statement signed by Chloe that she had given to Daniel’s family.

“It says here that the children were taken away from you, that Luka forbade you from meeting them, and that every year you asked them for support.”

“That is how it was!” Chloe shouted.

“Then listen to this,” Marina said.

A voice sounded from the wall of the hall. The recording was old, but I recognized Chloe’s voice immediately.

“If the girls call me, tell them that a meeting is not possible. Daniel’s family must not find out that they are still waiting for me. I have a new life and I am not going to destroy it.”

The recording stopped.

No one moved.

I gripped the chair. On its back were my old pencil lines, with the girls’ names and dates. My whole body was trembling, but I could not cry.

Chloe’s face turned pale.

“That is not my voice.”

“It is your voice,” Lena said. “I was eleven years old. I stood behind the door and recorded everything.”

!!!  A volt férjem mosolyogva hagyott el a várandós szeretője miatt, de amikor az ügyvédem felállt, az ő keze megremegett

“You were a child!”

“That is exactly why I remembered every word.”

Jessie took one more thing from the box: a small silver lock with which they had locked the box of their mother’s letters.

“For fifteen years we sent you letters, gifts, and photographs. You did not receive them. But then you told everyone that Dad was hiding us from you.”

Chloe looked toward me.

“Luka, I just… I was young then.”

“You abandoned six children,” I said. “Being young can be an explanation, but not an excuse.”

Marina took out the last document.

“Daniel’s family never knew this. They thought Chloe had only temporarily separated from her first family. Tomorrow morning this recording and all the documents will reach them.”

Chloe struck the table with her hand.

“You cannot do this!”

“I already did,” Marina replied.

Someone quietly exhaled in the hall. Chloe seemed to understand for the first time that her new family was much larger than this box.

But just then Marina’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and her face changed.

“It is Daniel’s lawyer,” she said. “They have already confirmed receiving the recording. But they found one more thing in the old archive.”

“What?” Jessie asked.

Marina looked toward me.

“After that night Chloe signed a document she never told you about. If this document is genuine, she will lose not only her family, but her own future as well…”
