They left me in the rain with my newborn child, and when one call came, Luka’s smile suddenly disappeared

I was holding my newborn daughter when my husband locked the palace door in front of my eyes and changed the house code.

The rain struck my face. I had three-day-old Lily wrapped in a pink blanket, and she slept peacefully, as if she could not feel that her return home had turned into a nightmare. But I could not move. The red light on the lock was still blinking.

I entered the code once more.

Denied.

I took out my phone and called my lawyer. I had known Phoebe Reed for almost eight years. She had seen my most difficult negotiations, hostile acquisitions, and court disputes. But she had never heard my voice this calm.

“Sell it,” I told her.

Silence fell on the other side of the line.

“Jessie, are you absolutely sure?” Phoebe asked me. “Is the house still in your name?”

“Yes.”

“You never entered Luka in the document?”

“Never.”

“The mortgage?”

“I paid it off in full last year.”

“The marital agreement?”

“It is valid and solid.”

Phoebe let out a heavy breath.

“You gave birth three days ago.”

I looked down. Lily’s tiny fingers were clutching the edge of the blanket. The incision in my abdomen burned, but what hurt me more was that I was supposed to bring her home for the first time, and now I was standing like a stranger in front of the door.

“He left me outside my own house three days later,” I said. “And he flew to Miami with his mother and sister using my personal card.”

Phoebe’s voice immediately hardened.

“I am opening all the files. The buyer who appeared last month is still interested. It is cash, with no conditions. We will finish in seventy-two hours.”

I looked back. Warm golden light came from the enormous windows. I had built this house. The stone walls, the wooden staircase, the copper lamps hanging in the kitchen—everything had been bought with years of my work.

Luka’s family acted as if they had been born here. His mother, Wendy, welcomed guests on holidays and said, “Our house welcomes everyone.” His sister Stephanie hung her own portraits in the foyer. Luka called the house his own estate when speaking to clients.

But now they thought that one changed code meant everything.

“Sign it today,” I told Phoebe.

“Where are you going?”

“To my sister Evelyn.”

“Did you tell Luka anything?”

“Not yet.”

“Jessie, do not go back there alone tonight.”

Raindrops fell from the sleeve of my coat onto Lily’s blanket. Only then did I first fear that the baby would get cold. The fear quickly turned into anger.

I called Evelyn. She answered on the very first ring.

“Are you at home with the baby?”

“I’m outside.”

“Where?”

“At home. Luka changed the code.”

She was silent for several seconds.

“Do not move. I’m coming.”

“I can drive myself…”

“Jessie, you had an emergency C-section three days ago. You are not driving in the rain. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

I ended the call and looked at the house windows. Somewhere inside, Luka’s mother was probably drinking coffee in my living room and celebrating victory in my house.

I held Lily more tightly against my chest.

At that moment I realized: while Luka was drinking a toast in the sun in Miami, the kingdom he thought he was stealing was already losing its owner. But I did not yet know how far his greed would go when he saw the first document…

After Phoebe’s last words, music could still be heard on the other side of the line. The sound of waves, the clinking of glasses, and a woman’s laughter. Luka sounded so cheerful, as if a few hours earlier he had not left his wife and child in the street, but had given them a small gift.

“Darling,” he told me, “Mother and Stephanie are delighted with the ocean view. Mother even shed tears.”

I was standing in Evelyn’s living room. It was midnight. Lily was breathing peacefully in a small crib, while a heavy blanket lay across my knees. Phoebe and Evelyn sat in front of me and listened to the phone.

“You changed the house code,” I said.

“Yes, I wanted to talk about that,” he laughed lightly. “You are very tense and irritable after giving birth. We thought spending a few weeks resting at Evelyn’s would be good.”

Evelyn set her glass on the table so hard that tea spilled. I raised my hand to make her be quiet.

“We thought?” I repeated.

“Mother, Stephanie, and I. You know that many things need to be put in order in this house now. A calm environment is needed for the baby.”

“In my house.”

“In our family house, Jessie.”

Phoebe put her pen on the table. Her eyes became strangely cold.

“Luka,” I said, “did you also tell your mother that she has never had an ownership right in this house?”

“Don’t start a legal conversation. You are family, not a foreign investor.”

“You are family when you do not lock the door on your newborn child.”

For several seconds, his breathing changed.

“This is a temporary decision. Changing the code does not mean I threw you out of the house.”

“Then why don’t you tell me the new code?”

Silence.

Evelyn quietly said:

“Because he has no answer.”

Luka heard her.

“You stay out of this, Evelyn. You are intensifying Jessie’s emotional state.”

“Leaving my sister’s baby in the street is not an emotional state,” she replied. “It is cruelty.”

Luka lowered his voice.

“Jessie, if you apologize now, I will consider letting you return home.”

The sentence was so strange that for a moment I wanted to laugh. He was talking to me about returning home like someone giving alms.

“You no longer decide anything, Luka.”

“What does that mean?”

Phoebe pushed a folder toward me. A small red stamp was on it. The buyer’s preliminary contract had been sent several hours earlier.

“It means you can no longer demand to return to a house you do not own.”

Luka’s laughter disappeared.

“Jessie, don’t you dare.”

“I already dared.”

“You cannot sell the house without my consent.”

“I can. And I am selling it.”

This time there was no music. It was as if he had moved far from the shore, into an empty room.

“My mother lives there,” he said.

“Without my permission.”

“I am your husband.”

“And still you are not the owner.”

Evelyn smiled for the first time, but her smile did not resemble happiness. It was relief she had been waiting for for years.

Luka breathed out roughly.

“You cannot think because of the baby. When you return, you will regret all this.”

“I regret only one thing,” I said. “That I saw your true face so late.”

I ended the call.

Silence settled over the room. From Lily’s crib came the sound of a small wooden toy bell. It was the toy my mother had given me in my childhood, and which I was now keeping for my child.

Phoebe opened the folder.

“There is one matter here that concerns not the sale, but future steps against Luka.”

“What matter?”

She turned the screen toward me. Times from the entrance camera, card transactions, and several messages were visible there.

“We received all this today. But I have not yet seen the most important thing.”

“Where is it?”

Phoebe looked at the phone. Concern appeared on her face for the first time.

“At the clinic where you gave birth to Lily. Someone called from there and said there was a mistake in the document about the baby. We have to go tomorrow morning. If what they told me is true, Luka is facing a much bigger problem than losing the house…”

No one slept after Phoebe’s words. At five in the morning Lily woke me, and for the first time I felt my body, heavy with milk, dry out from fear. I fed the baby, then locked myself in Evelyn’s small bathroom and looked at my own face in the mirror.

I had been a mother for three days. But that morning I felt as if my whole life had been stolen in one night.

We arrived at the clinic at eight in the morning. The sharp smell of disinfectant stood in the corridor, while the thin hand of the clock moved slowly on the wall. Phoebe walked ahead, I carried Lily, and Evelyn stayed so close beside me as if someone were trying to take the child away.

Our doctor, Dr. Moran, was waiting for us in a small room. He held a cup of coffee, but was not drinking it.

“Jessie, before I tell you anything, I want you to know that the hospital has already begun an internal investigation.”

“What happened?”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Luka changed the child’s birth registration form without you. In the original record, the child’s second surname was not written. Later, someone indicated that Lily was his family’s heir and that she should have her father’s surname in all financial documents.”

“Is that possible?”

“Legally, without your signature—no.”

Phoebe immediately asked:

“Who made the change?”

Dr. Moran took out a small memory card.

“Security cameras recorded Luka and another woman. They entered the archive room on the night when you were still in surgery.”

My fingers clutched Lily’s blanket. The small gray hat on the baby’s head stuck to her skin.

“Luka should not have been there,” I said.

“That is why we gave the recording to your lawyer.”

Phoebe inserted the card into the laptop. A narrow hospital corridor appeared on the screen. Luka walked in front of the camera. Wendy walked beside him. A few minutes later they disappeared through the archive door.

Then the sound came on.

!!!  ЧАСТЬ 4 — A férjem megtiltotta, hogy meglátogassam a gipszből szabaduló anyámat, aztán a sógornőm hirtelen elsápadt

“If we cannot obtain her signature, the child’s birth record will be enough,” Wendy was saying. “The house will still remain with Luka when Jessie can no longer manage the assets.”

Luka’s voice answered:

“She will not be able to sell the house. She will be weak after the pregnancy and the operation. A few weeks is enough. Then we will transfer everything into my name.”

I was looking at the screen, but the room seemed to be slowly turning.

“Did he know that you were selling the house?” Evelyn asked.

Phoebe shook her head.

“No. But there is something else here.”

The video continued. Wendy was holding a second folder.

“The child’s paternity document is not finished yet,” she said. “If a problem appears, a test will be necessary.”

Luka answered:

“There will be no problem. The child is mine.”

Phoebe stopped the recording.

“Jessie, the hospital laboratory requested verification of the paternity test because the blood types did not match the information Luka entered on the form.”

We called Luka. He answered on the third ring.

“What are you doing to me?” he shouted. “Are you denying the baby’s paternity too?”

“We are denying nothing,” Phoebe answered. “We are reading the result.”

She opened the document.

“According to the test, Luka is not Lily’s biological father.”

Luka’s breathing was clearly audible on the phone.

“That is a lie.”

Wendy shouted from behind him:

“Impossible!”

Evelyn lowered her eyes. The doctor pressed his lips together. But I became strangely calm. It was as if the answer I had been unable to name for years had finally been spoken aloud.

“Jessie,” Luka whispered, “whose child is the baby?”

I had no answer. Phoebe did.

“The identity of the biological father indicated in the document must be confirmed tomorrow morning. They have already contacted him.”

At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

I answered.

“Mrs. Jessie,” said a calm man’s voice, “I need to speak to you about your daughter. And I assure you, Luka still does not know the worst news…”
