Part 4 — They left me in the rain with my newborn child, and when one call came, Luka’s smile suddenly disappeared

The unknown man’s voice did not stop for several seconds.

I stood by the window and watched the snow-white cars in the clinic yard.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Daniel Hayes. You do not know me, but your mother knew me.”

These words took my breath away.

My mother had died two years before Lily’s birth. Lately I could no longer speak about her, because every memory hurt me all at once.

“What are you saying about my mother?”

“Not only about her. About your father too.”

Phoebe immediately came closer and gestured for me to put the phone on speaker.

“Speak,” I asked.

“I am the person who kept your family medical archive. Your mother wanted me to reveal the truth only if the question of your child’s paternity ever arose.”

Evelyn covered her face with her hand.

“Jessie, why didn’t Mother tell you this?”

“Probably because she was afraid,” Daniel said. “But it can no longer be hidden. Lily’s biological father is alive. And he is not a stranger.”

Phoebe asked for his address. Half an hour later Daniel came to the clinic. He was over sixty, and in his hand he carried a brown leather bag. The bag had a small copper lock, with letters engraved on it that resembled my mother’s handwriting.

“This is supposed to be given to you,” he told me.

“Why now?”

“Because Luka tried to change the child’s birth record, and the instruction your mother left about this was activated.”

Phoebe opened the lock.

Inside were a letter, several medical documents, and a photograph.

In the photograph my mother was young. Beside her stood a man whom I recognized immediately.

My father.

I had never seen him. Mother always said that he had died in a foreign country before I was born. But the date written on the back of the photograph said something else: it had been taken nine years after my birth.

“He was alive?” I asked.

Daniel lowered his head.

“He was. And after your mother declared him missing, he left his property in your name. It was with that property that you bought your first company. You never knew where the initial capital came from.”

My knees gave way.

My whole life, my career, my house—everything suddenly acquired a new meaning. I thought I had built my world alone. In reality, someone from the past had opened a path for me, and I had continued that path with my own hands.

Phoebe quickly reread the documents.

“It says here that a trust fund for Lily’s inheritance has already been created. Luka will have no access to it. Nor to any of the assets.”

At that moment my phone rang again. It was Luka.

“Where are you?” he asked. His voice was no longer confident. “They called me from the house. The buyer has been there.”

“The buyer bought the house.”

“What?”

“I signed.”

“You would not dare.”

“I already dared.”

Behind him Wendy was crying, while Stephanie was shouting something. Luka was trying to cover the noise.

“Jessie, this will destroy the family.”

“Your decisions destroyed the family.”

“Let’s talk about the baby.”

“You no longer have the right to speak now. Lies about the baby were recorded, documents were changed, and you entered the hospital archive illegally.”

“I am her father.”

“No, Luka. You are only the man who demanded fatherhood when it gave you property.”

It became quiet on the other side of the line.

Then he said:

“I cannot do anything without you.”

For the first time I heard in his voice not love, but panic.

“That is your problem,” I answered and ended the call.

That same day Phoebe called the banks and card companies. The money spent by Luka, Wendy, and Stephanie was frozen. The travel card was canceled. The airline refused to issue a new ticket to the three of them remaining in Miami because the card had been used illegally.

Luka called his lawyer.

“Tell him I am disputing the house,” he demanded.

The lawyer looked at the documents and told him several minutes later:

“I cannot take this case.”

“Why?”

“Because you are neither the owner nor the child’s father, and your own voice can be heard on camera when you say that you will take assets away from your wife.”

Luka could not answer anything.

The next day Phoebe arranged a meeting. I, Luka, his mother, Evelyn, and two investigators sat in the room. There was a screen on the table.

!!!  I took an elderly neighbor woman into my home and her relatives accused me of wrongdoing, but the moment they heard me whisper, everyone around fell silent.

“This recording is not necessary,” Luka said. “It is all a family misunderstanding.”

Phoebe pressed the play button.

Luka’s own voice rang out in the room:

“She will not be able to sell it. A few weeks is enough. Then we will transfer everything into my name.”

Luka stared at the screen.

For the first time I saw on his face a person who heard his own words from outside. He slowly raised his head.

“I did not say that.”

“You did,” I told him.

“Jessie…”

“Do not say my name to me anymore as if there were still anything between us.”

Wendy began to cry.

“You are destroying the family,” she told me.

“No. I am only closing the door that you yourselves broke.”

The investigators asked them to go outside. The case entered the investigation. The charges brought against Luka were later confirmed: attempted fraud, illegal entry, and misuse of financial cards.

I did not go to court for revenge.

I went so that Lily’s name would be protected.

The sale of the palace was completed in three days. The buyer, a young engineer from San Francisco, was waiting for the house with his wife and two children. He told me that what he liked most was the small reading corner under the staircase.

“This house seems happy,” he told me.

I only smiled.

“I hope you make it happy too.”

While emptying the old house, I entered Lily’s room. The small wooden toy my mother had given me in childhood still hung on the walls. The crib was empty. On the windowsill, one photograph remained—I and Luka on our wedding day.

I picked up the photograph.

Luka was smiling, while I stood beside him and thought I was building a house for us.

I did not throw the photograph in the trash. I put it in a box, because I did not need to erase my own past. I simply no longer allowed it to enter the future.

Six weeks later I moved to a small town where no one knew my surname. There I bought a quiet house with an old apple tree in the backyard. In the morning I walked Lily. At noon I spoke with the employees of my new company. In the evening I sat on the floor and folded the baby’s little socks.

!!!  Al paisprezecelea medic mi-a spus că fiul meu de șase luni nu va supraviețui nopții, iar soacra mea m-a acuzat că l-am ucis până când un băiat zdrențăros a descoperit ce ascundea dulapul din camera lui

One morning the first snow came.

Lily was already trying to crawl. She held a pencil and drew uncertain lines on a white sheet of paper.

“What are you drawing?” I asked.

She tapped the paper with her finger and laughed.

There was a small house, a big sun, and two figures. One big, the other very small.

“Is this us?” I asked.

Lily nodded.

That evening I received a letter from Luka. He was not writing to me from prison—the trial was still ongoing—but it contained a short message sent through a friend.

“Give me a chance to fix everything. I want to see Lily. You know that I loved you once.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“Only those who choose truth, safety, and responsibility will have a place in Lily’s life. You made your choice. And I have already made mine.”

I wrote nothing more.

I went to the window. Outside, snow was falling quietly. Lily’s wooden toy, which I had taken to the new house, stood on the windowsill. The small bell swayed slightly in the wind.

Its sound no longer frightened me.

It did not remind me of the house.

It reminded me that a house is made not by walls, but by peace.

The bell rang once more.

This time I opened the door myself.

Missed the beginning?
