My Husband Was Kicking Me Out of the House with His Lover, but at My Calm Reply, Both Stopped Smiling at the Same Time

That day, when I returned home with the children, my husband and his lover were waiting for me at the door with divorce papers. The cold autumn air of Atlanta was catching in my lungs, but what frightened me most were their faces — they stood on the veranda as if not a stranger, but a foreign criminal, were waiting there.

I was holding the hands of eight-year-old Leo and six-year-old Zuri. The children were still happy. Leo was explaining some complicated rule of a video game to his sister, while Zuri rhythmically struck the asphalt with her little light-up shoe. I listened to them and tried not to let them notice how my right hand was trembling.

A heavy brown leather folder lay in my bag. Three days earlier, a Manhattan law firm had called me and told me that my uncle Elias had died. Elias had always been considered a strange, solitary man in our family. No one visited him. No one called him. But I wrote to him every birthday, sent him photos of the children, and never forgot his voice on the telephone.

Now I knew that he had not been poor at all. Decades earlier, Elias had bought half-ruined buildings in New York and had quietly waited for the entire city to change. His fortune included thirty million dollars in cash and a skyscraper located in the middle of Manhattan. He left everything to me.

I wanted to share this news with Marcus. I foolishly believed that his humiliation would stop when he learned that the fortune of his “insignificant, work-from-home wife” was many times greater than his annual income.

Our white car passed through the gate. Ahead, by the oak tree, I saw a strange white car. I immediately recognized the black rims and the expensive license plate. It belonged to Sarah — Marcus’s brother David’s wife, and the woman who had mocked my existence for the last seven years.

“Mom, you’re squeezing my hand too hard,” Leo whispered.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” I said and released his hand, though I could not take my eyes off the veranda.

Marcus stood at the door in a dark blue suit. Sarah stood beside him, her shoulder pressed against his. She held a thick stack of papers in her hand. The sound of her heels on the concrete was slow and sharp.

“The children stayed in the car,” I told them. “I have to speak with their father.”

“You own nothing here anymore,” Sarah told me and extended the stack toward my chest. “This house was never yours.”

The papers fell to the floor. The very first page said that Marcus was requesting a divorce.

“Sign it,” he said. “Leave today.”

“You’re doing this in front of the children?”

“Don’t play the victim,” Sarah sneered. “Marcus is tired of supporting you.”

For seven years Marcus had checked every one of my expenses. He called my consulting income a “little hobby.” And his family quietly but deliberately called me a “parasite.”

Marcus leaned toward Sarah.

“You have to leave the house tonight,” he told me.

At that moment, the leather folder in my bag touched my ribs. Fear could no longer rise into my throat. In its place, something calm and cold appeared.

“Okay,” I said.

Sarah’s smile changed.

“Okay? Just like that?”

Marcus furrowed his brows. “What are you laughing at?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“This house is mine,” I said quietly.

Sarah began to laugh, but Marcus raised his hand. At that same moment, a black car stopped at the end of the street. A woman got out of it, holding a sealed folder, and walked straight toward us. She stepped onto the first stair, reached for the folder’s clasp, and said to me…

The woman nodded and handed the sealed folder to Marcus.

“I am Nora Blake, a New York lawyer,” she said. “Serafina’s representative.”

The color drained from Marcus’s face.

“This is a family matter,” he replied.

“It no longer is,” Nora answered and handed the folder to me.

Sarah stretched out her hand. “You cannot open anything here.”

“You can call the police,” I said. “But first the children will come inside.”

Marcus blocked my way. “Serafina, don’t you dare make a scene.”

“You made the scene when you waited for me in my house with divorce papers.”

Nora opened the clasp. There were several documents inside, but only one sentence was visible on the top sheet. Marcus saw it, and suddenly his breath caught.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Escuché a mi esposo burlarse de mí junto a su amante, y cuando entré en casa su sonrisa desapareció

“What does it say?” I asked.

Nora looked at him first, then at me.

“Before we read this, there is one thing you must know. Elias left you not only property.”

Sarah sneered. “Another cheap threat.”

Nora took out the bottom sheet.

“He wanted Serafina to understand why she should not trust certain people in this family.”

Marcus reached toward the document, but Nora stepped back.

“If I read this aloud, no one will have a way back,” she said.

And at that very moment my telephone rang. A hospital number appeared on the screen. Nora looked at the call and her face changed…

Nora answered the call and listened silently for several seconds. Then she turned on the speaker.

“Ms. Blake, I’m calling from the laboratory,” said an unfamiliar voice. “The verification of the documentary audio recording is complete. You can listen now.”

Marcus took one step back.

“What audio recording?” he asked.

Nora took a small memory device out of the folder. Its surface was covered with fingerprints.

“Elias left us this recording two weeks before his death,” she said. “He wanted Serafina to know how they were trying to seize her fortune.”

Sarah’s face hardened.

“This is absurd.”

“Then listen,” Nora replied.

The recording started. First the ticking of a room clock was heard, then David’s voice.

“If Marcus files for divorce, Serafina will be emotionally destroyed. If we throw her out of the house, we will be able to hide the property in her name.”

Sarah lost her color.

Then Marcus’s voice was heard.

“She doesn’t even know what she owns. We’ll make her sign everything we need.”

Marcus reached toward the telephone.

“Turn this off!”

“That’s you,” I said.

“The recording is forged!”

Nora took out a second document. “Independent experts examined the voice. In addition, here are copies of bank transfers proving that David and Sarah stole information about Elias’s fortune for years.”

Sarah leaned against the stair railing. Her heel became stuck in a crack, and for the first time she could no longer maintain her confident expression.

I could not speak. Instead of joy, a heavy sadness poured into my heart. Elias knew everything. He knew that I was alone in this house and still tried to protect me until the very last moment.

!!!  Mein Vater brachte drei Jahre nach dem Tod meiner Mutter eine fremde Frau nach Hause und schickte mich zu ihrer strengen Mutter – doch am See erfuhr ich, warum sie mich wirklich fortgeschickt hatten

“Marcus,” I said, “you knew about my work, but you never understood who I was.”

He lowered his eyes.

“We can make an agreement.”

“No.”

“You have children. All this will make things more difficult for you in court.”

Nora looked at him calmly. “In court, precisely all this will make the case easier.”

At that moment my telephone made a sound again. This time it was a message from the New York property management company. I opened it and read it. The last appendix to Elias’s will said that his main building had not been left only to me — there was a secret basement preserved there, whose key I alone was to receive.

But the second sentence stopped my breath: the basement held evidence whose existence would send a still-living person to prison. At that same moment David called me. When I answered, he said only one phrase: “Serafina, if you go down there, you’ll understand that Marcus is the least guilty…”
