They Caught Me Entering the Rosses’ Nursery, but One Tiny Bracelet Changed Lorenzo’s Face

That night, when the son of the most dangerous man breathed against my chest for the first time, I knew I would not leave the room alive.

For two months, everyone on Long Island had spoken Lorenzo Rossi’s name in whispers. They said his empire stood on fear, loyalty, and blood. But that evening, money could help no one in his enormous mansion.

A generator hummed in the basement, doctors moved silently through the corridors, and two armed guards stood in front of the nursery. Little Leo’s body rejected every bottle. Formula, donor milk, even medicines. The monitor beside his bed gave off a thin, unbroken sound.

Doctor Danieli told Lorenzo in a low voice:

“If nothing changes, he will not last even forty-eight hours.”

“Have you tried everything?”

“Everything medicine can do.”

I was holding a white plate in the corridor. My hands were shaking so much that I held the edge of the ceramic between my teeth. Leo’s weak crying could be heard behind the door. It was not ordinary crying. The child no longer had the strength to cry loudly.

I was only a servant. A twenty-four-year-old, silent and inconspicuous woman whom the mansion’s guests regarded as part of the furniture. Three weeks earlier, I had lost my newborn. The small bed left at home, the unfolded diapers, and the miniature socks hanging in the closet choked me so much that I decided to return to work.

But the body did not care about my decision.

I still had milk.

Every morning I wrapped my breasts with a wide cotton bandage, put on my uniform, and endured the pain through clenched teeth. I told no one that I had been pregnant. Least of all could I reveal in the Rosses’ house that my child had died.

That night, Leo’s quiet crying broke something in me.

I passed beneath the security camera. The guard looked into his phone. I opened the door slightly.

The night nurse had fallen asleep by the window. Leo lay in the bed, pale, thin, and so light that it felt as though I were taking not a child but warm cloth into my arms.

“Forgive me, little one,” I whispered.

I pressed his cheek to my neck. I unfastened the top button of my uniform and told myself that it would be only one minute.

At first, nothing happened.

Leo moved his lips, then stopped. The monitor’s sound quickened. My breath caught.

And suddenly the baby latched on.

He swallowed once.

A second time.

A third time.

The monitor’s thin alarm gradually quieted. Tears ran down my face.

“You’re eating,” I kept saying, trembling. “God, you’re really eating.”

Just then, heavy footsteps sounded in the corridor.

The door opened.

Lorenzo Rossi stood on the threshold. Two guards had stopped behind him. His gaze moved first to my opened uniform, then to Leo, then to the monitor, which for the first time in several weeks was calmly showing a heartbeat.

I expected anger.

But Lorenzo looked as though he had been struck in the face.

Then his eyes stopped on my wrist. I was still wearing the small, yellowish bracelet from the maternity hospital, on which my name and the hour of my child’s birth were written.

Lorenzo’s face changed in one second.

“Kazador…” he pronounced almost in a whisper.

“Mr. Rossi, I… the baby was dying.”

“Who was your child by?”

The air in the room froze.

No one had known about my pregnancy. At least, that was what I thought.

Lorenzo took one step forward and stopped the guard with his hand.

“Where did you get that bracelet?” he asked me.

I hugged Leo more tightly.

“At the hospital. My child was born there.”

Lorenzo lowered his eyes. For the first time I saw fear on his face.

“Your child,” he repeated. “What was his name?”

Behind him, Doctor Danieli locked the door. Then he placed a hand on the black folder lying on the table and slowly moved toward me…

The folder did not reach me. The door opened so abruptly that the doctor immediately pulled his hand back.

Lorenzo’s lawyer, Matteo Bianchi, stood there. He held a small wooden box.

“Before you say anything, you must see this,” he said.

“I am feeding a child here,” I said. “We have no time for riddles.”

“That is precisely why we have no more time.”

Lorenzo looked at the box.

“Where did you get it?”

“From the hospital archive. A record filed under Kazador’s name disappeared this morning. But I left a copy.”

My stomach tightened.

“My child died,” I whispered. “I saw it with my own eyes.”

Matteo shook his head.

“You saw only a closed box. You did not see the face.”

Lorenzo turned to the guards.

“Lock every door. No one leaves.”

“Why?” I asked.

For the first time, he looked directly at me.

“Because if this bracelet is genuine, then two children were born at the hospital that night. And someone deliberately hid the birth of one of them.”

Leo’s little fingers gripped my skin. His breathing was already calm, but my heartbeat hammered in my ears.

Matteo opened the box. Inside lay a folded sheet of paper and a broken seal.

“Only one person can answer this,” he said.

At that same moment, Lorenzo’s phone rang. The name of the hospital’s chief doctor appeared on the screen.

Lorenzo answered.

A frightened woman’s voice came from the other side:

“Mr. Rossi, they opened the grave. There is no child’s body inside…”

Lorenzo’s phone slipped from his hand, but it did not reach the floor. A guard caught it. Such silence fell over the room that we could hear every swallow from Leo.

“Repeat that,” Lorenzo said.

The woman answered through tears on the phone:

“The box is empty. They found only a small plastic card.”

Matteo glanced at me.

“What does the card say?”

“The hospital’s internal code. The case number of the Rosses’ family.”

I laid Leo down in the bed, but my hands did not obey me. The bracelet issued under Kazador’s name had grown heavy on my wrist.

“Tell me the truth,” I said to Lorenzo. “Now.”

He closed his eyes. All his power seemed to fall from his shoulders at that moment.

“Your child did not lose his life three weeks ago,” he said.

“Then where is he?”

Doctor Danieli stepped back.

“Lorenzo, do not do this.”

“Be quiet,” he answered.

Matteo unfolded the paper. It bore the hospital stamp, but one number in the middle had been crossed out in red.

“Kazador’s child was born alive,” the lawyer said. “The record says that the infant was temporarily transferred to a special department because the mother had complications.”

“I was conscious,” I said. “The nurse told me that my child would not survive.”

“That same night,” Matteo continued, “Leo’s nanny secretly brought another child to the mansion. This child was not Lorenzo’s.”

Lorenzo placed a hand against the wall.

“Sandra was afraid that Leo’s illness would prove hereditary. She altered the records together with Doctor Danieli. Your child was brought to Leo because their blood types matched and your milk would save the baby.”

I could not breathe.

“What are you saying?”

Matteo took out a second sheet of paper.

“Leo is biologically Lorenzo’s son. But the child buried three weeks ago was not your child. Your son was transferred to a secret department and kidnapped from there.”

Lorenzo fell to his knees in front of me.

“Kazador, I did not know.”

“But someone did.”

“I will find him.”

“First tell me why your family’s case number was on my bracelet.”

Matteo was about to answer, but the phone rang again. This time an unknown number appeared on the screen.

Lorenzo answered.

After several seconds, his face turned pale.

“If you want to see your child alive,” said an unfamiliar voice, “take Leo out of the room and come alone.”

The call ended.

Then a message arrived on the phone. A photograph of a child was attached to it.

In the photograph, my child was sleeping.

And beside him lay the little wooden toy that I had put into the empty coffin on the day of the funeral…
