Part 4 — They Caught Me Entering the Rosses’ Nursery, but One Tiny Bracelet Changed Lorenzo’s Face

As soon as he saw the photograph, Lorenzo threw the phone at the wall.

“Lock every door!”

The guards moved, but this time I was no longer afraid of their weapons.

My child was alive.

Somewhere.

And someone knew that I would find this out.

Matteo picked up the phone from the floor.

“Do not call them,” he said.

“They have my child.”

“If you act emotionally now, you will lose both children.”

Lorenzo turned toward him.

“Tell me that you have already contacted the police.”

Matteo lowered his eyes.

“I did.”

Silence fell over the room again.

“And?”

“I no longer trust the city police. Someone erased every record over three weeks. So we are going to the federal investigators.”

Lorenzo’s face hardened.

“They will come after me too.”

“If you are innocent, you will prove it.”

“My affairs…”

“Your affairs are no longer the main thing. Now this is about a child’s kidnapping.”

For the first time, Lorenzo could not find an answer.

I looked at Leo. His little chest was rising peacefully. A white drop of milk remained on his cheek.

“He is staying here,” I said.

“Kazador…”

“If my child is found, I will leave with both children. No one will stop me.”

Matteo nodded.

“That is exactly what we will tell the investigators.”

That same night, the mansion no longer looked like a prison. It became a crime scene.

The cameras were sealed.

The guards were disarmed.

Doctor Danieli was taken to a separate room.

Sandra, Leo’s nanny, tried to escape, but they found her by the back door. She was holding a baby pacifier and kept repeating that she had done everything on Lorenzo’s orders.

Lorenzo immediately shouted:

“You are a liar!”

Sandra looked at him.

“You told me that the child would be hidden only for a few days.”

“I never…”

Matteo placed a voice recorder on the table.

Sandra’s voice sounded through the room.

“If the boy survives, he must disappear under Kazador’s name. And the family will protect Leo.”

Then Lorenzo’s voice came.

“I do not want my son to die. Do what is necessary.”

!!!  Part 4 — I signed at the divorce table, but when the lawyer turned over the last page, my husband turned pale

Lorenzo slowly approached the table.

His own words stood before him.

He listened to them as to the confession of a stranger.

“I was speaking about saving him,” he whispered.

“But someone took my child with your words,” I answered.

He lowered his head.

This time, I did not begin comforting him.

In the morning, investigators found bank receipts in Danieli’s office. The money had been transferred to several accounts. One account belonged to the director of a private clinic that had served the Rosses’ family for years.

The second account belonged to the landlord of my old apartment.

I froze.

“Were they involved with me too?” I asked.

Matteo handed me a sheet.

“The rent had been paid three months in advance. From the day you submitted your application for work.”

Then I understood that my employment had not been accidental.

Someone knew that I had milk.

Someone knew that I was a mother.

And someone needed Leo to remain alive until my child disappeared forever.

Three days later, investigators found an old industrial district. In the background of the photograph, a yellow ship had been painted on a wall. They found the same drawing on the back wall of an abandoned children’s clinic.

I went with them.

Lorenzo wanted to come along, but Matteo blocked his way.

“This time you will stay behind.”

“He is my child too.”

“Precisely why you must not meet him.”

In the abandoned warehouse, they found my child in a small room.

He was alive.

Thin, frightened, but alive.

When I picked him up, his body recognized me immediately. The child’s fingers gripped my neck, and he cried with a voice I was hearing for the first time in three weeks.

I sat down on the floor.

I cried and laughed.

“Mother is here,” I kept repeating. “Mother will not leave again.”

Lorenzo stood at the warehouse door. The investigators did not let him enter.

From a distance, he watched the two children: one sleeping against my chest, and the other gripping my fingers with his hand.

!!!  A férjem a szeretőjét vitte a jótékonysági estére, engem pedig otthon hagyott, de amikor bemutatták a házigazdát, elfelejtett mosolyogni

“Thank you,” he said to me.

I shook my head.

“I do not need thanks. I need responsibility.”

The trial continued for months. Danieli, Sandra, and the clinic director were arrested. Lorenzo handed his financial network over to the investigators, because otherwise they would take custody of both children away from him.

His empire fell apart.

I did not meet this with joy.

I simply no longer helped maintain it.

Lorenzo’s words in the recording did not prove to be a direct order for a crime, but his negligence opened the way for everything. The court forbade him from being alone with the children. He could see them only in the presence of a supervisor.

Once, after a hearing, he stopped me in the corridor.

“Could you forgive me at least one day?”

“Forgiveness and return are not the same thing.”

“I lost my family.”

“And I found a family. For the first time, by my own rules.”

He could say nothing more.

Three months later, I moved to a small town by the sea. I rented a bright apartment where, in the mornings, the sound of seagulls could be heard through the window. I began working part-time in the newborn-care department at a hospital.

My son drew a yellow ship every evening.

Leo was still with me. His treatment continued, but little by little he gained weight, and the doctors said that he was no longer in danger.

The children could not fall asleep without each other.

One night my son asked me:

“Mother, why are there two of us?”

I sat down beside his bed.

“Because you were very strong.”

“Was Leo strong too?”

“Leo was too.”

“You too?”

I kissed his forehead.

“I learned too.”

On the first morning of winter, snow came. The children pressed their noses to the window. Leo caught a small snowflake in his palm, while my son ran into the room laughing and brought me a drawing.

He had drawn a yellow ship.

This time there were three people standing on the ship.

Me, him, and Leo.

Several weeks later, I received a letter from Lorenzo. Not through a lawyer. It was only one page.

!!!  Mein Mann ließ mich wegen seiner Geliebten zu Hause zurück – doch als der unbekannte Gastgeber erschien, verschwand sein Lächeln

“If you ever need me, I will be here.”

I folded the letter and did not send a reply.

The next day he sent a short message:

“Can I see the children on Sunday?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“With a supervisor. By the children’s rules. Not by your rules.”

He replied with only one word:

“I understand.”

For the first time, I truly realized that perhaps he really understood this word.

Even years later, I kept the small, yellowish maternity bracelet. It was no longer on my wrist. It lay in a wooden box, together with the children’s first drawings and the broken seal that had led me to the truth.

One evening my son entered the room holding the bracelet.

“What is this?”

“Proof that once everyone thought everything was over.”

“And was it really over?”

I went to the window. Outside, snow was still falling quietly.

“No,” I told him. “It began then.”

I put the bracelet back into the box.

This time it no longer meant a lost child.

It meant that my child had returned.

And I would never again let anyone take motherhood away from me.

Missed the beginning?
