Part 4 — Eleven Years Later, My Ex-Husband Saw Me with the Twins, and His Face Tensed All at Once at the Sound of Unknown Footsteps

Sergio gripped the phone in his hand as if an answer were hidden on its screen.

“I have to go alone,” he said.

“No,” Gabriel replied.

“She is my mother.”

“And that was your first excuse too,” I said.

The security guard in the foyer had already blocked the corridor. Outside, rain began, and drops struck one another on the glass doors. Elisa was still sleeping, while Mate was chewing the corner of the blanket. Their calm seemed incompatible with the chaos that was now arranging my past in front of me.

Gabriel took out his phone.

“I am calling the duty investigator at the prosecutor’s office.”

“If you do that, my mother will die,” Sergio said.

“If I do not, someone else may have their life distorted too.”

Valeria took out her phone from her bag and quickly dialed a number.

“Dad, everything has come to the surface. No, I do not know how many documents they have… no, Sergio is still here.”

Gabriel took the phone away from her.

“Your daughter is a witness. Do not force her to become a suspect as well.”

The loud conversation stopped.

Valeria looked at her own hands for the first time. The gold watch hung strangely on her wrist, as if it were someone else’s item.

Patricia stood by the wall and bit her lips.

“I was very afraid,” she said. “At the time Estela told me that if I did nothing, my brother would lose his job. Then they told me that your case was just one ordinary record.”

“It was one record that changed my life,” I said.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t. For years I thought that my body was broken.”

Patricia’s eyes lit up.

“That is why I brought everything.”

That same evening the investigative group arrived. They sealed the folder, the phone, and Patricia’s box. Sergio tried to help, but his lawyer, who arrived half an hour later, told him directly:

“Do not comment at this stage.”

“You are my lawyer!” Sergio became angry.

“That is precisely why I am telling you. You have already said more than enough.”

Sergio looked toward me.

“Mariana, I did not know that the result had been changed.”

“But you knew that you did not want to listen to me.”

“I was young then.”

“Are you saying the same phrase even after eleven years?”

He could not find an answer.

That night the investigator showed us the recording. Only one file from the clinic’s old surveillance camera had survived. In the footage Estela was standing in the administrator’s office. Young Sergio was sitting in front of her.

I thought I would not be able to listen. I listened anyway.

“If the result is bad, Mariana will leave,” Estela was saying.

“Are you sure?” Sergio was asking.

“Valeria will strengthen your career. This marriage is getting in your way.”

“The result has to be real.”

“Real is not enough. It has to be convincing.”

Then Sergio’s voice was heard:

“If she has a choice, she will stay with me.”

Estela chuckled.

“She will not have a choice.”

The file ended.

A heavy silence fell over the room. Sergio was listening to his own voice and seemed to hear for the first time what kind of person he had been.

“I don’t remember this,” he whispered.

“But you said it,” the investigator replied.

Valeria could no longer remain seated and sat down on the floor. The gold watch on her hand touched the wall and a sharp sound rang out.

The next morning Estela’s lawyer called himself. He said that his client had not been at the hospital—she was hiding outside the city, in the family’s old house. The meeting was a trap, so that all the documents could be stolen.

Gabriel put me in the car.

“The police are already on the way.”

“Sergio?”

“He will also have to answer.”

“I do not want him to go to prison.”

Gabriel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“That is no longer your decision.”

For the first time I did not feel guilty about someone else’s punishment.

It was the first sign of freedom.

Three days later Estela and the clinic administrator were arrested. Valeria’s father’s company lost its contracts with medical institutions. Valeria testified as a witness and hoped for leniency from the court. Sergio admitted that he knew about the falsified result, but said that he could not fully believe it.

I no longer proved what he deserved.

I was only telling the truth.

At the first court hearing Sergio tried to come up to me.

“Listen to me at least once.”

“I listened to you for eleven years while you were silent.”

“I loved you.”

“Perhaps. But love that does not even try to verify the truth is not a safe place.”

“The children… are they happy?”

“Yes.”

“Will you tell them anything about me?”

“When they are old enough, you will tell them yourself. If by then you are still able to tell the truth.”

He lowered his head.

Several weeks later I looked around the rooms of my old house. On the day of the divorce I had left with two suitcases and thought that I had left nothing there. But behind the wardrobe I found a small wooden box. Inside lay my old university pass, one unopened letter, and a dark blue clasp that had fallen off the leather bag.

I held the clasp in my hand.

At one time it had been a symbol of my escape.

Now it had simply become an object.

Six months later the program I headed was launched in five new laboratories. Every sample required two independent confirmations. Every change had a separate digital trail. A small sheet hung on our wall: “One changed number can become a person’s entire life.”

When Mate returned from kindergarten, he brought me drawings. On one sheet he had drawn four people—me, Gabriel, himself, and Elisa. Above them was a large yellow sun, and below was a small green house.

“This is our house,” he told me.

“Why are there no clouds here?”

“Because they went away.”

Elisa began to laugh. Gabriel brought four cups of tea from the kitchen.

This was my new life: coffee brewed at six in the morning, children’s pencils on the floor, every number checked in the laboratory, and a man who never told me what I should feel.

In winter I received an invitation from Barcelona. We were to present my research at a conference. Before leaving for the airport, I received a message on my phone from an unfamiliar number.

“Mariana, please meet me at least once. Now I understand everything. I want us to start again.”

It was Sergio.

Gabriel saw the message, but did not ask anything.

“Will you reply to him?” he asked only.

I went to the window. The first snow was falling in the yard. Mate and Elisa pressed their palms against the glass and tried to count the white flakes scattered through the air.

I wrote to Sergio:

“I am no longer waiting for your return. I accepted the truth, and I have already built my life. I wish that one day you will no longer run away from your own decisions.”

Then I blocked the number.

I felt neither anger.

Nor victory.

Only peace.

That evening I took my old leather bag out of the wardrobe. I attached a new golden clasp to it, which the children had chosen themselves. I returned the old dark blue clasp to the small wooden box.

Gabriel asked me:

“Why don’t you throw it away?”

I looked through the window. In the yard there were children’s tracks, connected beside one another in the snow.

“Because once it opened a door for me,” I told him.

And for the first time I realized that the past no longer controlled me.

It was simply a small clasp.

And the door was already open for me.

Missed the beginning?
