Eleven Years Later, My Ex-Husband Saw Me with the Twins, and His Face Tensed All at Once at the Sound of Unknown Footsteps

At the moment when my daughter was sleeping on my chest, an unfamiliar woman laughed loudly and told me that I was holding someone else’s children in my arms. It was four o’clock in the afternoon in the foyer of the Guadalajara Military Regional Hospital. The smell of dust, the bitterness of disinfectant, and the warm aroma of infant milk mixed together. My son was fingering the yellow blanket, while I was thinking only about how not to wake Elisa.

“Look who has returned,” came from behind me. “The woman who was never supposed to have children is now taking someone else’s babies for a walk.”

I recognized Valeria’s voice exactly even after eleven years. I turned around slowly. She was standing in an expensive light-colored dress, a gold watch shining on her wrist, and Sergio was standing beside her.

Sergio no longer resembled the captain who had once waited at my door with flowers. Gray had crept into his temples, his shoulders had drooped, but his eyes were still the same—he recognized me immediately and immediately became frightened.

“Mariana…” he whispered.

“Lower your voice,” I told him calmly. “The children are sleeping.”

Valeria took a step forward.

“Children? Are you really going to deceive everyone here?”

The blue clasp of the leather bag hanging from my shoulder cut into my skin. I had brought this bag from Barcelona, from the day when I first decided that I would no longer live by someone else’s diagnosis.

“Are you still arranging other people’s lives?” I asked.

Valeria’s smile changed.

“Some people lose their families because they were not made for a family.”

Sergio shifted his eyes to my children. Elisa had a small mark on her cheek, while Mate was moving his lips in his sleep. I could see how Sergio was trying to recognize something in them, and that hurt me more than his words.

Eleven years earlier, his mother, Estela, had opened a folder for me in the clinic café and told me that my ovarian reserve was critically low. Sergio did not allow me to have a repeat examination. Four days earlier, he had already prepared the divorce papers.

“Just sign, Mariana,” he had told me then. “I have to become a father.”

“Maybe the result is wrong?”

“Enough,” he had replied.

That day, his silence turned out to be louder than his mother’s insult. Within several months I went to Barcelona, received a biotechnology scholarship at the university, and years later learned that the samples in my old medical records had been changed.

And now I was standing in the same hospital where they had once made me feel like an inadequate woman.

Valeria crossed her arms.

“Sergio, tell her that these children are not yours.”

Sergio barely managed to produce a voice.

“I only want the truth.”

“Did you want the truth when the second folder was already in your hands?” I asked.

His face turned pale.

At that moment, the sound of military boots rang out one after another in the foyer. Someone stopped behind me. The heavy bag on my shoulder became lighter—an unfamiliar hand carefully took it off.

“Is everything all right, darling?” asked a calm voice.

Gabriel Montano was standing behind me. A small silver insignia shone on the pocket of his uniform. Sergio saw it and seemed to have the air knocked out of him.

Gabriel looked first at the children, then at me.

“The meeting in the director’s office was postponed,” he told me. “But as I see it, a more important meeting has begun here.”

Valeria smiled ironically.

“Are you her new husband?”

“Her husband and the head of this hospital’s medical quality program,” Gabriel answered.

Sergio took one step back.

At that moment I realized that he was not looking only at my children. He also recognized the man standing behind me. And if I read his gaze correctly, Gabriel already had something whose existence Sergio had no idea about.

Gabriel took a dark green folder from the bag and placed it on the table.

“Mariana,” he said, “are you ready for us to open this in front of them?”

My hand moved toward the clasp of the folder…

My fingers were still holding the clasp when Sergio extended his hand forward.

“Not here,” he said. “This is a family matter.”

“You remembered the family when you saw the children?” I asked.

The security guard in the foyer asked Valeria to stand beside him. She gave an angry snort.

“This woman has always loved drama.”

Gabriel did not close the folder.

“This is not drama. These are medical records, the alteration of which could become a criminal case.”

A muscle moved on Sergio’s face.

“You know nothing.”

“That is precisely why I brought the originals,” Gabriel replied.

Before I could open the folder, a woman rushed up from behind. Her hands were trembling, and she was holding a box of old documents.

“I know,” she said. “I worked in the laboratory then.”

It was Patricia Salgado, the technician who had first written to me years ago. Fear stood in her eyes.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Când soția fratelui meu m-a împins în bucătărie de Crăciun, întreaga familie a tăcut, iar soțul meu a pălit

“Mariana, I am sorry that I kept silent for so long.”

“What did you do?” I asked with difficulty.

Patricia looked at Sergio.

“Your sample was changed. But all of this was not only Estela’s decision.”

Sergio shouted loudly:

“It’s a lie!”

At that same moment Patricia’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and lost color.

“They know that I am here,” she whispered. “And they told me that if the folder is opened, the video will also be published…”

She handed the phone to Gabriel. One sentence was visible on the screen: “The safety of your children depends on us” …

Patricia’s phone slipped from her hand and fell onto the marble floor. The message was still glowing. My daughter moved uneasily, and I pressed Elisa more tightly against my chest.

“No one will touch the children,” Gabriel said. His voice was calm, but such severity appeared in his eyes that I had seen only in the eyes of people accustomed to giving orders.

He signaled to the head of security.

“Lock the rear entrances. Patricia is coming with me. No one is to leave this foyer.”

“You are violating my rights!” Valeria shouted.

“No one has accused you yet,” Gabriel replied. “But now you are all witnesses.”

I opened the dark green folder. My name was written on the very first page. Below it were the laboratory stamp, the date, and the result that had been shown to me eleven years earlier.

Patricia placed her hand on the page.

“This copy was forged. The real record is here.”

She took a folded sheet of paper from the box. The paper was so old that its edges had become brittle.

Gabriel compared the numbers between the two records.

“The sample number was changed,” he said. “Instead of your blood, a sample from a patient who had premature ovarian failure was used.”

I could not make a sound.

“So… my result was normal?”

Patricia lowered her eyes.

“Completely normal. The hormonal indicators were in a range favorable for pregnancy.”

Sergio shook his head.

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew that you did not want a repeat,” I said. “You knew that Estela had chosen the clinic herself. You knew that you had prepared the divorce papers before the result.”

“My mother told me that everything had been confirmed.”

“And you believed me without asking about my health even once.”

Valeria suddenly cried out:

“That is an old story! What are you trying to do, extort money from us?”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich lag bewegungslos im Sterbezimmer, als mein Mann seine Geliebte die Fenster ausmessen ließ – dann verschwand sein Lächeln

Gabriel turned the black folder toward her.

“And these are transfers made from your father’s company account. The money went into the account of the clinic administrator’s brother two days before the results were changed.”

Valeria’s smile disappeared.

Sergio looked at the folder and whispered:

“No… this is impossible.”

“The only impossible thing was that you wanted to learn the truth,” I answered.

At that moment another call came to Patricia’s phone. The number was hidden. Gabriel turned on the speaker.

“If these records are handed over to the police,” a man’s voice said, “Mariana’s children will end up in a safe place forever. And this is only a warning for now.”

The call ended.

My heart began beating as if the fear from eleven years earlier had returned to my body. Gabriel took my hand.

“Now I know whom I need to call,” he told me.

But before he could take out his phone, Sergio’s watch rang. He looked at the screen and his face changed completely.

“Estela is at the hospital,” he said. “And she says that she will confess everything if I go alone…”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You do not yet know why your mother is calling you. And the worst news is not waiting for you in that room…”
