I Was Not Allowed into My Brother’s Wedding as a Guest and Was Dressed in Black, but the Bride’s Father Broke a Glass and Lost Color

“You are not a guest invited here, Mariana. You came here to work.”

Beatrice Sterling said these words to me at ten past five in the morning, when I was ironing my brother’s tuxedo in the enormous house in Greenwich. Steam struck my face, and red marks from the hot iron remained on my hands. My mother did not even make a sound. To her, this was as ordinary as drinking morning coffee.

I was twenty-seven years old and had spent my whole life paying a debt I had never taken on.

Richard and Beatrice told me that they had found me when I was a child. According to their story, my real parents had died in a car accident, and they had saved me only so that I would not end up in an orphanage.

Whenever I could barely stand from exhaustion or asked for one of my own things, they always told me the same thing.

“You should be grateful that you have a roof over your head at all.”

With this gratitude I cooked food, washed floors, tidied Sebastian’s room, picked up his dry cleaning, and solved every problem he created. Sebastian was their biological son. Everything in the house revolved around him.

That Saturday he was marrying Renata Vance, the daughter of Alexander Vance, one of the country’s most influential builders. For Richard and Beatrice, this wedding was not love but golden doors to new contracts, money, and entry into high society.

“Wear black,” Beatrice told me, straightening the sleeve of my dress with her fingers. “Nothing conspicuous. You will help the wedding planner, check the suppliers, and you will not appear in the family photographs.”

“Does Sebastian know that I am not a guest?” I asked.

She smiled at me coldly.

“He has more important things to do than worry about you.”

Several hours later, when I was carrying the guests’ garment bags upstairs, I heard his voice from Richard’s study.

“As soon as the marriage is registered, the Vances will bring us into the Hudson Yards project,” he was saying. “We only need to keep her out of their sight.”

“Does Alexander know who this girl really is?” the lawyer asked.

Silence fell.

Then Richard laughed quietly.

“No. And he must not find out. The girl knows her place.”

I stood behind the door. The thick fibers of the carpet pricked the soles of my feet, but I could not feel them. For the first time, I wondered why they were so afraid of my existence.

!!!  Als mein Mann meinen Rang für wertlos erklärte und seine Mutter in mein Haus einlud, hörte er plötzlich auf zu lächeln

That evening, a rehearsal dinner was held at a private club. I had a small receiver in my ear, a leather folder in my hand, and I was wearing a black blouse. Renata approached me in the foyer.

“You are Sebastian’s sister, aren’t you?”

There was warmth in her smile, but Beatrice immediately stepped between us.

“Mariana is simply helping the staff, dear. She is very shy; crowds frighten her.”

Renata looked first at my mother, then at me. As if the lie were written on my face.

Half an hour later, I saw Alexander Vance. He was standing beside the bar and looking not at the glasses I was holding, but directly at my face. Then he slowly crossed the room.

“What is your name?” he asked.

“Mariana Sterling.”

The color drained from his face.

“Do you know who your biological mother was?”

The air caught in my throat.

“I was told that she died when I was a child.”

“Her name?”

“I don’t know.”

The glass in his hand fell to the floor and shattered on the marble.

Richard immediately appeared beside us. Standing next to Alexander, he looked at his face and went pale as if he had seen a ghost.

“Mariana, go to the kitchen,” he told me.

Alexander did not answer. He only held out his hand and placed a business card between my fingers. On the back, in a trembling hand, was written: “Do not leave tonight. I need to talk to you.”

Richard looked at the card as if an explosive device were lying before him. And I understood for the first time that the secret was not what I represented to this family.

The secret was what would happen if someone powerful found out that I existed.

At eleven o’clock at night, Alexander waited for me in the back corridor of the hotel. First he locked the door, then opened the folder and put his hand inside. His fingers reached a small yellowish envelope. I leaned toward him, but he reached for the lock…

The paper of the envelope rustled softly. Alexander first glanced at the corridor, then checked the door twice.

“Don’t be afraid,” he told me.

“I have been afraid for twenty-seven years. I no longer know what I should be afraid of.”

He took an old photograph from the envelope. A young woman stood on a seashore in the photograph. She had my face, only her eyes were tired.

“This is Elena,” he said. “Your mother.”

I gripped the chair.

“You knew her?”

!!!  Catorce horas después de nuestra boda, mi esposo me arrojó una bayeta grasienta delante de su familia y su madre dejó de sonreír

“She was not my sister. She was the woman I loved. And after losing her, you disappeared.”

The floor creaked beyond the door. Alexander hid the photograph and lowered his voice.

“Richard said that Elena had given birth to a child and that both of you had died. I believed him because I was abroad that night.”

“Why did you tell me my mother’s name as if you already knew that I was her?”

Alexander took a small silver pendant from his pocket. A miniature shell was engraved on it.

“Elena always wore this. The other half should have been among your belongings.”

I opened my bag and took out the pendant hanging around my neck. I had had it since childhood. The two parts fit together exactly.

Footsteps approached quickly outside.

Alexander locked the door.

“If they see you here in the morning, they will take everything from you. But you have not asked the main question yet.”

“Which one?”

He turned the photograph over. On the back were three words: “Trust only him.”

Then Alexander brought his face close to mine and said in a whisper:

“Mariana, Richard knew that your mother had not died. He knew where he had taken her…”

“…and that is exactly why he hid you in this house,” Alexander finished.

The words fell as if heavy iron had dropped in the room. I could no longer breathe. The shell pendant enclosed in my hand cut into my skin.

“Where did he take her?” I asked.

Alexander took several documents from the envelope. The first was an old hospital certificate, the second—an adoption certificate, and the third—a statement written in Elena’s hand.

“Elena did not die in a car accident,” he told me. “She was taken to a hospital with severe injuries. She survived, but lost her memory. Richard went there and told the doctors that her family did not exist. Then he took you away.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena knew about his financial fraud. And you…”

“What about me?”

Alexander took out an old laboratory result.

“You are my daughter.”

It seemed as if the ticking of the clock in the room stopped. I was looking at the paper, but the letters were becoming mixed together.

“That is impossible.”

“I had two independent DNA tests done. The result is ninety-nine point nine percent. You are my child, Mariana.”

The door was opened. Richard rushed in, followed by Beatrice and Sebastian.

“Alexander, this is a family matter,” Richard said.

“No,” Alexander replied. “This is a crime.”

!!!  Five Years Later, My Twins Stood Before Him, and When His Mother Came, the Color Faded from Her Smile

Beatrice’s lips were trembling.

“We saved the child.”

“You stole my daughter,” Alexander said.

For the first time, Sebastian looked at me as if I were a human being.

“Mariana, are you really our sister?”

“Did you know yourselves?” I asked.

He shook his head. The answer was written on his face.

Richard raised his hands.

“Everything was a mistake. We raised her.”

“As a servant,” I said.

At these words, silence fell over the room.

Alexander placed the phone on the table. Elena’s photograph was visible on the screen, and then an audio recording began. Richard’s voice was heard: “The girl knows her place.”

Richard leaned against a chair.

“This was recorded illegally.”

“But it is your voice,” I answered.

Alexander played the second recording. This time Richard was saying that Elena’s medical records had to be destroyed and my existence hidden from the Vances.

Beatrice began to cry.

And for the first time I felt not fear, but emptiness. As if I had lived someone else’s life for years and now it had been returned to me.

But as soon as the recording ended, Alexander’s phone rang. He answered, listened for several seconds, and his face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

He looked toward me.

“Elena is alive. And this evening she told the police that Richard tried to kill her…”
