Part 4 — When I arrived at the hospital, they addressed me as the billionaire’s wife, but his fiancée signed a document and suddenly went pale

At the nurse’s last words, Vanessa immediately looked toward the door.

Lucas, meanwhile, put his phone into his pocket.

“Nobody leaves,” Marco said.

Two security guards took positions at both ends of the corridor. The wet marks from their shoes spread across the white floor like black stripes.

“Why should I stay here?” Vanessa asked.
“Because the police are on their way,” Doctor Sato answered.

Lucas looked at the lawyer.

“They misunderstood everything. We can explain.”

The lawyer closed the folder.

“I work only with legal documents. From this moment, I am no longer your representative.”

It was as if the floor had been pulled from beneath Lucas’s feet for the first time.

“You cannot do this.”
“I already have.”

The phones began ringing at the same time. Vanessa’s adviser was asking why a copy of the recording had spread among Ethan’s company’s board of directors. Lucas was receiving a call from the bank because temporary restrictions had been placed on his accounts. Another call came from the police station.

And I was standing in front of Ethan’s room.

The nurse opened the door for me.

“Only a few minutes.”

I found Ethan with his eyes open. His face was pale, and there was a thin line of dried blood beside his lip. His left hand lay on the blanket.

“Claire,” he said.

At the sound of his voice, my heart gripped with such pain as an old wound does when the weather changes.

“Do not talk,” I told him.
“If I do not talk now, I may once again not make it in time.”

I pulled a chair up to his bed.

“Why did you not tell me the truth?”
“Because I believed Lucas would protect you.”
“You gave someone else the right to protect me and then for eleven years—”
“Eleven months,” he corrected me quietly.

I wanted to be angry. But his fingers were trembling.

“I thought you no longer loved me,” I said.
“I wrote to you every day. The letters did not reach you.”
“And you did not check even once?”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“I thought leaving was your choice. That is my greatest crime.”

There was a knock at the door. Investigators entered. Their leader was Mrs. Moreau, short, with a stern look and a transparent bag in her hand.

“Claire Bennett, we need your testimony.”
“Here?”
“You are the first person who saved his life. If you had not known about the sedative, he might not have survived until morning.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“She always noticed what others could not see.”

Lucas’s voice sounded in the corridor.

“This is edited! I was only trying to protect the company!”

Investigator Moreau opened the door.

“Mr. Wayne, your words have already been recorded. Repeating them now will not help you.”

Lucas was brought into the room. His face was gray. Moreau placed a small device on the table and turned on the recording.

Lucas’s own voice sounded in the room:

“The accident must look accidental.”

Lucas froze.

“I did not say that.”

The recording continued.

“Claire’s letters will be enough. She will leave on her own.”

Vanessa stood by the door. She covered her face with both hands.

“Turn it off,” she said.

“Why?” Moreau asked. “Is it the first time you are hearing what you were saying?”

Lucas looked at the device, then at his own hands. His lips opened, but no word came out anymore.

I watched him and felt something strange. Neither joy. Nor victory.

Only exhaustion.

The most painful thing was that eleven months of my life collapsed in his own voice.

That same morning Vanessa and Lucas were arrested on charges of forging documents, attempting poisoning, and arranging the accident. Vanessa did not tell the police everything, but her lawyer refused to defend her three hours later, when the bank records appeared as well.

The computer with which my account had been hacked was seized from Lucas’s apartment. They found my forged letters there, as well as a scanned copy of Ethan’s old contract, from which his signature had been transferred.

The trial lasted several months.

I did not attend every hearing.

Not because I was afraid.

I simply no longer wanted to be at the center of their lives.

I had to go to court at least once. The prosecutor played the recording. Lucas’s voice sounded in the courtroom again.

“Claire will leave on her own.”

I looked toward him.

For the first time he looked at me as if he had just remembered that I existed.

“You knew that I trusted you,” I said.
“Claire, I—”
“No. Do not explain anymore.”

My voice was calm.

“You said all of this yourself. I only listened.”

Ethan began recovering slowly. During the first weeks, a small plastic cup stood on the windowsill in the hospital room, into which I put three dried chamomiles. He could not stand the smell of the hospital, so every morning I left lemon peel beside his bed.

One day I did not return to his room.

I went to the empty apartment to collect my things. The living room was the same as on the day I left, except that our only photograph had been taken down from the wall. The photograph lay on the floor, its glass broken.

In the kitchen drawer I found the small brass key that I had carried with me for eleven months. The red triangle had left a dark mark on my finger.

I opened Ethan’s secret archive.

I found no money inside.

There were copies of all my letters, medical records, the dates of the account hacking, and one document confirming that our marriage had never been temporary. We had signed it so that the inheritance condition would be fulfilled, but there was one small clause in the agreement: the divorce could take place only with the consent of both of us.

Ethan had never canceled it.

Neither had I.

Three months later I moved to a seaside town. I rented a small apartment, from whose window I saw fishermen’s boats every morning. I began working in digital security and, for the first time in my life, used my own surname at work without anyone caring whose wife I was considered.

I did not have a daughter, but my neighbor’s six-year-old boy, Niko, often came to my place to draw. One day he drew a house, the sea, and a little man on a sheet of paper.

“Who is this?” I asked.
“You,” he answered.
“Why do I have such a big key?”
“Because you opened the door.”

I stuck the sheet to the refrigerator.

On the first day of winter Ethan sent me a message.

“I am no longer asking you to come back to me. I only want to explain once why I kept silent.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote to him:

“I have already heard the explanation. In your own voice.”

He sent me another message.

“Could we ever become friends?”

I went to the window. Snow was beginning in the street.

“Maybe, but not now. And perhaps, never.”

This time no answer came.

And I deleted the messages, put the phone on the table, and picked up Niko’s drawing.

The brass key was still in my pocket. The red triangle shone in the streetlight.

For the first time I was no longer afraid to open the door behind which my entire old life stood.

I turned the key in the lock.

And I closed the door.

Missed the beginning?
