He threw me out of the house during labor, and the next day came to the hospital with another woman — but stopped at the sight of the general

That night, when labor began, my husband threw me out of the house and told me that in his life I was only a burden.

I was standing in the kitchen. The clock showed eleven at night, and there was cooled tea on the table. I felt such a strong pain in my abdomen that I grabbed the counter with both hands. On my left wrist I wore a thin leather bracelet on which my late grandfather’s initials were engraved. This was the only thing I had left from him.

“Jason,” I barely said, “we have to go to the hospital. The doctor told me to call at the first contraction.”

My husband did not even take his eyes off the phone.

“I don’t have time for this now.”

The next wave was so painful that my breath caught.

“The baby is coming, Jason.”

He slowly looked up. On his face I saw not fear, but irritation.

“I’m already tired of your problems,” he said. “You always need something. A doctor, a car, attention… You are only a dead weight.”

Those words turned out to be more painful than the contraction.

“I am your wife.”

“You are not anymore.”

He took my hospital bag from the closet and threw it onto the floor. A small cloth doll that I had prepared for the baby fell out of the bag and stopped at the door.

“Go,” he told me. “And don’t come back.”

“Jason, I can barely stand…”

“That is not my problem.”

I leaned against a chair, but my knees gave way. I called our neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez. A few minutes later she rushed into the house, a woolen cape wrapped around her shoulders, and ran toward me.

“Emily, give me your hand. We are going to the hospital now.”

“Is he… is he coming too?”

Mrs. Alvarez looked at Jason.

“You are the child’s father.”

Jason shrugged.

“If he wants, he can go himself.”

It took all my strength to get to the car. At the door I looked back. Jason was leaning against the wall and smiling.

“Don’t come back to this house,” he shouted.

At the hospital, the white lights hurt my eyes. The nurse squeezed my hand, while the doctor calmly told me that the baby would be born soon. I was looking only at the phone.

!!!  Part 4 — My father kicked me out of the house at the Thanksgiving dinner, but when I placed the car keys on the table, the smile vanished from his face.

There was neither a call nor a message from Jason.

In the morning our son was born. Little Luka cried weakly, and I hugged him as if the whole world were hidden in his small body.

That same evening someone knocked on the door. Jason entered. Beside him stood an elegantly dressed woman with a sparkling wedding ring on her finger.

“It seems you lost,” he told me.

Jason crossed his arms.

“I moved forward.”

They still thought that the woman lying in bed was a helpless wife. They did not know why I hid my money, where I actually worked, or whom my secret life obeyed.

At that moment someone knocked on the door a second time. The nurses immediately straightened. A three-star general entered the room and stopped beside my bed. He brought his hand to his temple, then handed me a sealed folder.

“Colonel Carter, headquarters instructed me to personally deliver the new order to you and…”

“And what?” Jason barely managed to say.

The general did not even look toward him. He stood in front of me as if there were no one else in the room.

“The new appointment takes effect immediately,” he said. “But before this folder is opened, one matter must be clarified.”

The elegant woman lost color in her face.

“General…”

“Are you Colonel Carter’s assistant?”

“Yes, sir.”

Jason turned toward her.

“You know her?”

The woman stopped smiling for the first time.

“I have known her for six years.”

Beside my bed, Luka’s little hand moved. I looked at the baby and felt a strange calm. Jason was looking at me for the first time as if he had discovered a stranger in the room.

“Emily… who are you?”

The general placed his hand on the folder, but did not open it yet.

“You asked that question very late, Captain.”

Jason took a step forward.

“She is my wife.”

“You yourself told her that she was not anymore,” I answered calmly.

Silence filled the room. Then the general opened the folder’s lock. Inside there was not only one sheet of paper. There was the answer to the question of why I had hidden everything from my own husband…

The general took a sealed certificate from the folder and placed it on the bed. The corner of the paper touched Luka’s blanket. Jason looked at it as if his sentence were written there.

“Say it aloud,” he told me. “What have you hidden?”

I closed my eyes for several seconds. My grandfather’s leather bracelet tightened around my wrist. Its rough edge pierced my skin and reminded me that the truth protects a person even when no one is left trying to protect them.

“Before his death, my grandfather was the trustee of a family trust,” I began. “By his will, he left me twenty million dollars.”

The elegant woman caught her breath.

“Twenty million?” Jason repeated quietly.

“I have not received the money yet. The lawyers strictly forbade me to tell anyone until the transfer was completed. Including you.”

First astonishment, and then anger appeared on Jason’s face.

“I was your husband!”

“You were,” I answered.

The general opened the second document.

“Emily Carter is not only the heir to the trust,” he said. “She is a high-ranking colonel of the United States Army, the head of a classified mission, and today she is being appointed commander of the new operational command.”

Jason’s woman stepped back.

“You told me that she only processed documents at an agency.”

“You asked me where I worked,” I told Jason. “I did not say that I was insignificant.”

“Is that why you did not talk to me? Is that why you hid the money?”

“The law forced me to hide the money. Safety forced me to hide the job.”

“And me?” His voice broke. “What was I at all?”

Luka whimpered. I immediately bent toward him.

“You were the person I trusted. Until you proved with your own hands that I should not trust you.”

The general looked at the elegant woman.

“Maya, wait for me outside.”

Maya opened her lips, but could not make a sound. As she left, Jason’s ring slipped from his hand and fell onto the floor.

Jason remained beside the bed.

“All of this belongs to me,” he whispered.

“No,” I told him. “Neither the money, nor my rank, nor my child.”

He reached his hand toward Luka, but the general blocked his way.

“The child needs his mother’s protection first.”

At that moment a call came to my phone. A lawyer’s number was visible on the screen. I answered.

“Colonel,” the woman said from the other side, “the trust completed the transfer this morning. But another transaction was also recorded on your account. Someone tried to withdraw money in your name last night.”

Jason suddenly fell silent.

“Who?” I asked.

The lawyer exhaled before answering.

“A person who had the key to your house. And the camera captured his face clearly…”
