Part 4 — He threw me out of the house during labor, and the next day came to the hospital with another woman — but stopped at the sight of the general

“Do not hang up,” I told the lawyer.

Jason stood by the window. His hands were trembling.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said.

The general locked the door.

“No one will leave until the military police arrive.”

For the first time Jason lost the confidence with which he had entered beside my bed several hours earlier.

“Emily, listen to me. I did not try to take the money.”

The lawyer’s voice could be heard on the phone.

“The attempt on the card was recorded at two thirteen at night. The amount was small, but the request was repeated four times. The house safe code was used.”

“Only Jason and I knew this code,” I said.

“That is so,” she replied. “One more thing. Before that, a letter entered the trust office saying that you were incompetent and that others were forcing you to make financial decisions.”

Jason turned around.

“I was only trying to protect you.”

“They do not throw someone out of the house during labor in order to protect her,” I told him.

There was a knock at the door. Two military police officers and a civilian investigator entered. Jason stepped back.

“Captain, please hand over your phone and keys.”

“My lawyer will come.”

“He has already come,” the investigator said. “And he refused to represent you as soon as he saw the recordings.”

Jason looked at the phone. A message from his own lawyer was visible on the screen: “We no longer represent you in this case.”

At that same moment a voice sounded from the small speaker in the room. The investigator played the recording.

“Go. Do not come back to this house. You are only a dead weight.”

It was Jason’s own voice.

The recording ended. Only Luka’s quiet breathing could be heard in the room.

Jason lowered his head.

“I did not want it this way.”

“But you said it this way,” I answered.

The next day the investigator told me that a case had been opened against Jason for document forgery and financial fraud. Maya gave testimony. She admitted that Jason had convinced her that I would soon become a rich widow and that she only had to temporarily play the role of my replacement.

Maya’s ring was removed that same day.

Jason no longer contacted me directly. His lawyers sent letters, first with threats, then with pleas.

“Come, at least let us meet because of the child.”

“Come, let us start everything over.”

“I made a mistake.”

I did not answer a single letter.

Three weeks later I moved into a separate room in military housing. The room was small, but a river could be seen from the window. I placed Luka’s crib against the wall, and attached his first drawing to the cabinet. There were three people in the drawing: me, Luka, and a big yellow sun. Jason was not there.

One evening the general visited me.

“Are you ready for the new assignment?”

“For the first time in a long time,” I told him.

He looked at Luka.

“And the family?”

“This is my family now.”

In a few months we moved to a new city. In the morning I tied Luka’s shoes, then went to work. At noon I checked reports, and in the evening I read him fairy tales. Twenty million dollars lay in the account, but the most precious thing was still the small room where my son’s laughter could be heard.

The first snow came in November. Luka stood by the window and drew circles on the glass with his finger.

“Mom, are we staying here now?”

“Yes.”

“Will no one throw us out anymore?”

I knelt in front of him.

“No one.”

That night I received Jason’s last message.

“Meet me just once. I want nothing else, not even money — just a chance.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. Before, at times like this, I looked for reasons to defend him. But now I saw only the truth.

“You already had a chance. You threw it away yourself.”

Then I blocked the number.

In the morning I took off my grandfather’s leather bracelet and placed it in Luka’s hand. It was too big for him.

“Is this yours?” he asked me.

“Now it is part of our family.”

He fastened the bracelet back onto my wrist and touched the engraved letters with his fingers.

Outside, snow was falling quietly. Inside the house, the sound of little feet could be heard.

I was no longer the woman whose husband ordered her to leave.

I was the woman who closed the door with her own hand.

And this time only I had the key.

Missed the beginning?
