Part 4 — Three Months Later, the Doctors Told Me I Had to Let My Child Go, but the Chief Doctor Lost Color at the Dog’s Reaction

At that very moment I called the police.

Mari stood beside me and held the phone with both hands.

“Tell them that the child is in danger,” she said. “And обязательно mention his name, the dose, and the forged signature.”

“I already told them.”

David leaned against the wall. His face showed such exhaustion, as if he had slept not all night, but his whole life, and now had been forcibly awakened.

“Nino, I did not want this to happen.”

“Then why were you silent?”

He could not answer.

Bruno sat by Luka’s bed. The small wooden plaque hanging around his neck touched his chest with every breath and knocked quietly.

“Bruno,” was written on it.

That sound was the only calm thing in those minutes.

Irakli Varshalomidze came in seven minutes later.

He always wore an impeccable suit, but now his tie was shifted to the side. He held a phone in his hand, and messages were appearing one after another on the screen.

“You must leave here,” he told me.

“My son is here.”

“Your son is in the process of treatment and you are interfering with the doctors.”

“You forged my signature.”

Irakli’s face did not change.

“Be careful with your words.”

Mari raised her phone.

“The whole conversation is being recorded.”

Irakli was silent for a moment, then turned toward David.

“Tell her that everything was legal.”

David raised his head.

“I cannot say that.”

“What does ‘I cannot say’ mean?”

“It means that it is enough.”

Real panic appeared in Irakli’s eyes for the first time.

The police arrived in two minutes.

The sound of heavy steps was heard in the corridor. Bruno raised his head, but did not growl anymore. As if he knew that the most dangerous part had already been exposed.

The policemen took Irakli’s phone and the folder. David was not arrested on the spot, although his card was taken from him and he was forbidden to leave the unit. Mari, meanwhile, handed over all her recordings to them.

Irakli still tried to regain control.

“This will destroy the hospital’s reputation,” he said.

I looked at him.

“You changed my son’s life for the sake of reputation.”

“You do not understand how many people you will harm.”

“I am only saying what you did.”

It soon became clear why they wanted Luka to be in a “goodbye” condition.

The hospital was secretly testing a new medicine on infants in serious condition. If the result was bad, their already existing damage was written in the records as the cause. If someone survived, they declared the data a success of the research.

Luka’s dose had not accidentally become excessive.

It had been deliberately increased.

They thought I was a tired mother who would finally sign and leave quietly.

They did not know that every night I wrote down every number on the monitor in a small notebook.

They did not know that I checked the white bracelet on Luka’s wrist because once another child’s analysis had already been found on his bed.

And they did not know that Bruno was not only a therapeutic dog. He had been specially trained to detect changes in the smell of blood sugar and certain sedatives. He saw what we could not see: the breathing of a child suppressed by medicine, but still fighting.

Luka was transferred to another hospital that same night.

For four days he fought on artificial respiration.

On the fifth morning the doctor looked into my eyes and told me:

“He squeezed my finger.”

I sat down on the chair and for the first time in three months cried not from fear, but from hope.

Several weeks later Irakli’s lawyer called me.

“Your client wants an agreement,” he told me.

“I am not your client.”

“I apologize. Your former hospital wants you to withdraw the complaint.”

“No.”

“The amount will be quite large.”

“My child is not for sale.”

I ended the conversation.

Then Irakli himself sent me a message.

“You do not know what you are doing. All this may turn against you.”

I sent him only one sentence:

“This time I know everything already.”

At the court hearing, several months later, I heard my own voice from the recording of that night for the first time. There my frightened voice said: “Why did you stop his treatment?” Then David’s voice could be heard:

“Tell the mother that there is no hope anymore.”

And Irakli’s answer:

“If she signs herself, the matter will be finished.”

Complete silence fell over the courtroom.

Irakli was looking forward, but while listening to the recording he slowly lowered his head. He could no longer hide from his own words.

Mari was sitting beside me.

“Now he heard for the first time what his voice sounds like,” she told me quietly.

I did not answer.

After the hearing I saw Luka’s old ward. The bed was empty. The greasy marks of my fingers had remained on the plastic wall. On the small table lay the white bracelet on which his name was written in black ink.

I took the bracelet home.

Six months later we were already living in a seaside city. I began working in the administration of a children’s clinic and told every new parent that asking questions was not something embarrassing.

Luka was still growing slowly, but in the morning he caught the sunbeams on the window with his hand. His favorite game was tapping the table with a wooden spoon.

Bruno came to us once a week. Luka touched his small wooden plaque with his finger and laughed.

One evening Luka drew something on a sheet of paper. In the drawing stood a large brown dog by the bed, and beside it was a small yellow circle.

“What is this?” I asked.

Luka looked first at Bruno, then at me.

“Light,” he said.

It was his first clear word.

Several weeks later I received another letter from Irakli. This time only one sentence was written: “Can we start over?”

I did not keep the letter.

I opened the window, and the wind lifted the paper from the table. It flew onto the balcony and disappeared into the street.

I no longer needed to punish him.

He was already living in the truth he had tried to hide for so long.

That evening Luka sat in my lap. Bruno slept at my feet. His wooden plaque lightly touched the ceramic floor.

I placed the white bracelet on the shelf, together with Luka’s first drawing.

Then I realized that this bracelet was no longer the sign of the night when I was afraid of losing him.

It became proof that he had chosen to stay.

And I stayed with him too.

Missed the beginning?
