Part 4 — My Husband Brought His Beloved Woman to the Hospital, but the Nurse’s Six Words Made Both of Them Stop Breathing

Dominic slowly lowered the phone.

“What did you find?” he asked.

Everyone in the corridor looked at him.

The head of harbor security answered:

“A living witness. A man who says that Marissa ordered him to replace the brakes.”

Marissa leaned against the wall.

“It is a lie.”

For the first time Dominic no longer tried to believe her.

He looked at Hannah.

“Call the police.”

“I already called,” she replied.

Marissa ran toward the door, but two police officers were waiting there. One of them extended her hands behind her back.

“Marissa Cole, you are under arrest on charges of attempted murder and financial fraud.”

“Dominic!” she shouted. “Tell them Claire arranged all of this!”

Dominic did not raise his head.

“Claire has been in surgery for three hours.”

“She influenced you!”

“No,” he said. “You influenced me. I simply understood far too late whom I was listening to.”

Marissa said nothing more.

The heels of her shoes tapped sharply on the floor until the police took her away.

Then Dominic looked at the lawyer.

“Freeze all the accounts. Immediately protect the house and money belonging to Claire.”

The lawyer swallowed.

“There is one problem. According to documents made out in your name, Claire has been declared to have left the house. You signed them yourself.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“Correct it.”

“For that you must admit that the documents were false.”

“I admit it.”

“This will harm you too.”

“It has already harmed me.”

Six hours later I woke up. My throat hurt, my body felt heavy, but the first thing I felt was a tiny finger in my palm.

Hannah was standing beside the bed.

“Your daughter is here. We brought her in for only a few minutes.”

The baby taken out of the incubator wore a small pink hat. Her breathing could be heard through a thin tube.

Dominic stood at the door.

“If you want, I will leave,” he said.

I looked at him for a long time.

“For the first time you said the right thing.”

He did not move.

“Claire, I…”

“Do not apologize to me now. I must first remain alive.”

“You will.”

“You can no longer promise me that.”

“Then I will promise you one thing. I will never again force you to stay with me.”

It was the first promise from him that was not accompanied by fear.

I placed my hand on the baby’s tiny fingers.

“I named her Lea,” I said.

Dominic nodded.

“Lea.”

That same day the police found at the harbor the man who had prepared cars for Marissa for years. He confessed everything: the damage to the brakes, the money that had been paid to him, and the call he received ten minutes before the accident.

Marissa denied the crime, but the records, cameras, and the files hidden in my medallion matched one another.

Dominic also had to testify in the investigation.

For the first time he sat in the same room where he had asked others questions.

They played the recording.

His voice was heard:

“Claire cannot hurt me as long as I control her name.”

Those in the room looked at him.

Dominic could not bear hearing his own words. His hands came down on the table and he lowered his head.

“I said that,” he admitted quietly.

The investigator answered:

“Yes. You said it.”

He did not become angry.

He did not shout.

He simply heard himself for the first time as I had been for others.

Three weeks later I was discharged from the hospital. Our house seemed enormous and empty. Dominic’s photographs were no longer in the living room, but one small thing left beside my bed was still there—the baby’s white blanket, with a brown stain from the night of the accident that I could not remove.

I opened the bedroom closet.

The wide sweaters were still hanging there. The winter coats were still waiting for me. Everything looked as if I had simply gone out for a few hours and now had to return to my old life.

But the old life no longer existed.

I took the medallion in my hand. The small image of the lighthouse was covered with scratches, although the door still opened.

On the day Lea was taken out of the incubator, Dominic told me:

“If you want, you and the child can live in another house. I will leave everything.”

“You should not leave everything for me,” I answered. “Just carry the weight of your decisions yourself for the first time.”

He nodded.

In the following months the court confirmed Marissa’s crime. She was sentenced to a long imprisonment. The financial investigation against Dominic continued, however, because for years he had closed his eyes to matters in the company that he should have known about.

I did not want to sink him.

I simply no longer covered for him.

Six months later I moved to a small coastal town. There the sound of the sea reached the windows at night, and in the morning the smell of cinnamon rose from the bakery. I began working as an administrator at a local clinic. For the first time in years, my salary belonged only to me.

Lea was already sitting independently. Her favorite activity was drawing lighthouses on sheets of cardboard.

One morning she brought me her drawing.

“Mom, this is you,” she told me.

On the sheet stood a tall lighthouse, and beside it a small figure holding a child’s hand.

“Where am I?” I asked.

“Here, inside the lighthouse. Where there is light.”

That evening I received a message from Dominic.

“I want to see Lea. And I want you to listen to me at least once.”

I held the phone in my hand for a long time.

Earlier, with such a message, I would have spent the whole night thinking about what each of his words meant. Now I only went to the window.

!!!  Apám azt követelte, hogy adjam oda a lakásomat az öcsémnek, de amikor kimondtam az igazat, az arca elsápadt

The sea was dark.

“Seeing Lea may take place according to the procedure established by the court,” I wrote. “You cannot return to me.”

The reply came immediately.

“Please.”

I put the phone on the table.

“Mom, who is it?” Lea asked me.

“A person who is now learning how to live after his choices.”

“Will he come again?”

“Maybe.”

“Will you be afraid?”

I ran my hand over her hair.

“No. Now I hold the door.”

That night I placed the medallion on the windowsill. The small silver lighthouse shone in the moonlight. For the first time I no longer needed to hide it under my dress, nor open it for an emergency, nor wait for someone to save me in my place.

Lea’s breathing could be heard from the next room.

Outside, the sea was calmly striking the shore.

I opened the window.

The lighthouse showed the way.

But this time I chose the way.

Missed the beginning?
