My Husband Took My Daughter’s Place at School, and When I Heard His Answer, He Was Frightened Himself for the First Time

My fifteen-year-old daughter was sitting at the kitchen table when she told me that she had not refused the offer of admission to the school herself.

She was wearing the gray jacket of Hawthorne Academy. She had bought it with the money she had saved from working as a babysitter for three months, and every evening, in that same jacket, she talked to me about that school as if she already lived there: the theater circle, literature lessons, the debate club, and the long red-brick corridors.

But the email said: “We confirm that the Mercer family voluntarily gave up Sophie Mercer’s place.”

Below it said that the released place had immediately been given to Noah Pierce, on the recommendation of my husband, Daniel Mercer.

“Who is Noah Pierce?” Sophie asked me.

“I don’t know yet,” I answered, although I had already heard that surname somewhere.

Daniel worked at Hawthorne itself. He managed donations, campaigns, and relations with influential families. He did not work in the admissions department and, by the rules, could not change any student’s place.

“Did Dad tell you anything?” I asked Sophie.

She gripped the sleeves of the gray jacket.

“On Sunday he asked me whether I would be very angry if I stayed at West Ridge School for another year.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That I would be very angry. That I wanted to study at Hawthorne.”

“What did he tell you?”

Sophie lowered her head.

“He told me that sometimes a family has to make sacrifices.”

That same evening I called Karen Holt, the head of the school records department. It was six o’clock in the evening, and only the cold light of the monitor was lit in the office.

“Rachel, I was waiting for you to call,” Karen told me.

“Did Sophie refuse herself?”

“No.”

“Did I sign it?”

A long silence fell.

“There is a document confirmed in the system in your name.”

My hands went cold.

“Karen, I didn’t write anything.”

“Then we have a serious problem.”

Daniel came home late. When he entered through the door, he again had that calm smile that for years had convinced everyone that they should trust him in a crisis. He kissed Sophie on the head, opened the refrigerator, and, turning his back, asked me:

!!!  A nővérem esküvőjén kétszáz vendég előtt aláztak meg, de amikor felálltam, anyám mosolya hirtelen eltűnt

“Anything new from Hawthorne?”

“What kind of news?”

He stopped for a second.

“The schedule, summer reading… something like that.”

“Nothing important.”

“Good.”

That was all he said. But then I understood: he was not waiting for the news. He was checking whether I already knew.

When Daniel went into the shower, I entered the parents’ portal again. The document said: “Parent authorization: Rachel Mercer.” Below, an internal note was visible: “Confirmed by the development department. D. Mercer.”

My husband had acted in my name and taken from our daughter the place she had earned through her own knowledge.

But that night I still did not know that this was only the first door toward a much darker room. A new entry appeared on the computer screen, and my hand moved toward opening the folder…

That same night I went into Sophie’s room. On the windowsill lay her little wooden theater mask, which she had borrowed from me one day before the school audition.

“Mom, did Dad really do it?” she asked me.

“I still have to find everything out.”

In the morning Karen called me. She told me that the withdrawal application had been sent not from the parents’ portal but through an administrative link.

“Which account did he use?” I asked.

“Daniel’s.”

In my study I printed the documents. Then I checked the joint bank account and discovered a transfer of eighteen thousand five hundred dollars to the Hawthorne Foundation. The money had been sent on the same day Sophie lost her place.

I called Daniel.

“Did we make such a large donation?”

“That is what I wanted to tell you.”

“For whom?”

“For students in need.”

“To help some particular one?”

“No.”

His voice was calm, but the pause turned out to be too long.

At the table in the evening I asked:

“Do you know Noah Pierce?”

Daniel’s knife stopped in his hand.

“Who?”

Sophie also saw the fear escape into his eyes.

Later Sophie told me that in April Daniel had been kissing Noah’s mother, Lauren Pierce, behind the auditorium. Then he had told Sophie that good families do not destroy themselves over one misunderstanding.

!!!  Meu pai se recusou a me acompanhar até o altar porque minhas cicatrizes de guerra estragavam a imagem da família, mas a almirante mais poderosa da Marinha me ofereceu o braço e trouxe um envelope que fez o rosto dele perder a cor

I hugged her.

“Never protect me from someone else’s lie again.”

The next morning I found another transfer — seventy-two thousand dollars to a company connected with Lauren. Then a hidden debt of ninety-six thousand two hundred dollars on our house appeared.

Daniel was not simply providing his lover with a new life. He was selling our house to finance it.

And just then my lawyer, Elena Moreno, called me.

“Rachel, I received the folder,” she told me. “But we found one more thing. We need to arrange a meeting tomorrow morning, before Daniel takes the next step…”

I arrived at Elena’s office the next morning. The clock hanging on the wall was eight minutes short of ten. A wooden folder lay on the table, and in its corner was a small theater mask drawn by Sophie.

Daniel was already there. Lauren was sitting beside him too, holding black sunglasses in her hand and behaving as if this meeting were only an awkward family conversation.

“Why are we here?” Daniel asked.

“Because explaining your actions is no longer a family matter,” Elena answered.

She took out the first sheet.

“Hawthorne security-camera recording. April fourteenth, nine twelve in the evening.”

The back exit of the auditorium appeared on the screen. Daniel and Lauren were standing there. Their kiss lasted several seconds, but for me time stopped.

Sophie had been telling the truth.

Lauren hid her face in her hands.

“This proves nothing,” Daniel said.

“On the contrary, it proves a lot,” I told him. “Especially that you forced my child to hide the truth.”

Elena opened the second document.

“According to the school system records, Sophie’s place was canceled from Daniel’s administrative account. After that, eighteen thousand five hundred dollars was transferred to the Hawthorne Foundation, and the released place was assigned to Noah Pierce.”

“It was a donation,” Daniel shouted.

“A donation that was followed by an immediately available place for your lover’s child,” I said.

Daniel’s face fell.

Elena opened the third folder.

“Now the house debt. Ninety-six thousand two hundred dollars. You took the money without my client’s consent and transferred it to a company owned by Lauren Pierce.”

!!!  Mi esposo confesó algo terrible frente al quirófano y, cuando mencionó a mi hermana, el rostro de todos cambió

Lauren stood up.

“Daniel, you told me the house was already yours.”

“Be quiet.”

“You told me Rachel would sign anything!”

Those words fell into the room like heavy objects.

I looked at Elena. She calmly took out the last document.

“That is exactly why I called you here. One week ago, before Daniel tried to take out a new loan on the house, my company, ‘Clean Accounting,’ entered the audit examination of Hawthorne’s procurement. My client is Hawthorne’s board of trustees itself.”

Daniel tensed.

“What are you saying?”

“I am auditing the school where you work. And the board already knows that you concealed a conflict of interest.”

This time, for the first time, I saw him lose control.

But Elena’s phone rang. She listened, then her color changed.

“Rachel, they are from the police. They said they found one more document in Daniel’s office. One that could change everything…”
