On Her Birthday, Her Father Threw Her Into the Fountain in Front of Everyone, but the Man Who Arrived Twenty Minutes Later Froze Her Father on the Spot

My father threw me into the fountain in front of everyone at his own daughter’s wedding, and then ordered the security guards to throw me out of the courtyard.

It was eight o’clock in the evening in the garden of the Royal Palms Hotel. Music was playing and champagne was sparkling in the glasses when my father’s voice suddenly drowned everything out.

“He couldn’t find a single person who would come with her!” he roared. “Who needs a woman like that?”

Penelope’s friends burst out laughing. My sister stood in her wedding dress, hanging on her husband’s arm and laughing as if she had been waiting for the scene. And I stood before them in a white silk dress, trying not to let anything show on my face.

My father placed his hand on my shoulder.

No. It was not a simple touch. He pushed me with all his strength.

I struck the edge of the marble fountain with my back and then fell into the ice-cold water. My shoe came off, my dress immediately grew heavy, and water filled my ears. When I raised my head, the guests were applauding.

That applause hurt more than the coldness of the water.

My mother turned her face away. Penelope bent at the waist from laughing.

“Look how dramatic she is!” she said. “She always ruins everything.”

As I stood up from the fountain, my right heel broke. My foot slipped on the marble bottom and my ankle hurt. Pink water was pouring from my dress because wine had spilled on its skirt. Around my wrist was a small silver bracelet in the shape of an elephant—my mother had given it to me in childhood, and I had never taken it off, even then.

My father looked toward the guests.

“Security! Take her out. Today is my daughter’s wedding, and this woman is ruining everything.”

Two men dressed in black came toward me.

“I’ll go myself,” I told them.

I followed behind them, but stopped at the edge of the fountain and looked at my father. My lips were trembling, though my voice came out calm.

“Remember this moment, Father. Let everyone remember it.”

“Are you threatening me?” he sneered.

“No. I’m warning you.”

He turned his back on me. For him, everything was over. The guests again took their glasses, checked their phones, and whispered to one another about how the bride’s sister had been thrown out of the fountain.

I went outside, pressed my wet coat against my body, and stood by the small service entrance beside the hotel. There, only the hum of the air conditioner and the chattering of my teeth could be heard.

The phone rang three times. The same name appeared on the screen—Blake.

I could not answer the first two calls. On the third, my finger trembled.

“Elena, where are you?” he asked.

“I’m no longer at my father’s house,” I answered, wiping the water from my eyes. “But today he made a very big mistake.”

The voice fell silent for several seconds.

“Stay where you are. I’ll be with you in twenty minutes.”

“Blake, don’t come. I don’t want this to turn into an even bigger scene.”

“Elena, they already turned it into a scene. Now I’m coming.”

Exactly twenty minutes later, a heavy rumble of engines sounded from the garden. One car followed another, then a third. The guests’ noise gradually quieted.

Blake got out of the middle car. He was wearing a black jacket and holding a dark umbrella. He looked neither at my father, nor at Penelope, nor at the businessmen who moved toward him with greetings.

He came straight toward me.

He draped an expensive cashmere coat over my shoulders, kissed my forehead, and turned toward the fountain. My father’s glass froze in his hand.

Blake placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Before we leave here, there is one thing they need to know,” he said.

My father looked at him for the first time, and his face changed. Blake took a thin black folder from the inside pocket of his jacket and reached to open the clasp…

At the sight of the folder, my father lost color. Blake did not raise his voice.

“He did not come alone,” he said. “Elena is my wife.”

Such silence fell over the garden that even the drops of water from the fountain could be heard.

“Your… wife?” my father barely pronounced.

“The woman you threw into the water,” Blake answered.

Penelope opened her lips but found no word. My mother looked at me for the first time.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” she asked.

“Because I knew you would see not my husband, but his wealth,” I answered.

Blake held out his hand to me.

“Do you want to stay here?”

The question was simple, but for me my whole life changed. For years, my father had decided where I sat, when I spoke, and how much humiliation I had to endure so that I would not be a “disgrace” to the family.

I left the broken heel by the edge of the fountain. Then I took Blake’s hand.

My father took one step forward.

“Elena, wait. What is in that folder?”

Blake looked at him and smiled for the first time—very calmly.

“The thing that concerns not your wedding, but a lie much older than it.”

The folder’s clasp opened…

The folder’s clasp opened and Blake placed the first sheet on the marble table. The corner of the paper fluttered in the wind, but he caught it with his hand.

“This is the agreement concluded between the hotel and your company,” he told my father. “Exactly ten years ago, you sold the share left in Elena’s name.”

My father narrowed his eyes.

“What are you talking about?”

“You signed in her place. You used a forged power of attorney and transferred her share to your own firm.”

Cold passed through my body again, though this time not because of the fountain. Ten years ago, my mother told me that my small share in my father’s business was “useless paper,” and that I voluntarily gave it up. I was studying at university then, and I trusted my father.

“That’s a lie,” he shouted. “Elena always knew that I handled the documents.”

Blake took out a second sheet.

“Then explain to everyone why the signature does not match the signature in her passport. Or why the examination confirms that this ink did not yet exist on that day in the office where the document was supposedly drawn up.”

The laughter disappeared from Penelope’s face.

“Father, is this true?”

“You be quiet!” he shouted at her.

My mother covered her mouth with her hand.

“We didn’t know…”

“You did know,” I told her. “That day you were with me. You told me to sign, or I would destroy the family.”

My mother lowered her head. The wedding ring on her fingers trembled.

Blake turned on his phone. The time and date of an audio recording appeared on the screen.

My father’s voice sounded, clear and cold:

“If Elena ever demands her share, we’ll say that she sold everything herself. Who will they believe, her or us?”

Someone in the garden let out a heavy breath. My father reached for the phone, but Blake pulled it back.

“This recording has already been sent to the court,” he said. “I came today only so that Elena would not be left alone with the man who considered her silence weakness all her life.”

My father leaned toward me.

“You did all this because of him? This man destroyed your family!”

For the first time, I was no longer afraid of him.

“No, Father. You destroyed it yourself. Blake only opened the door.”

At that moment, one of the mobile phones rang. Blake answered, listened to several words, and tension appeared on his face.

“What happened?” I asked.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The bank called me. Your father tried to withdraw all the money from the company’s accounts.”

My father immediately turned toward the head of security.

“Bring my car! Right now!”

Blake answered a second call. This time his gaze was directed straight at me.

“Elena, this is no longer only a matter of property. The police told me they found another document on your father, and it concerns your birth…”

He could not finish the sentence. At that exact moment, blue lights came on at the hotel entrance, while my father took on an expression as if he had understood for the first time—the heaviest truth had not yet been heard by anyone…
