At the moment when Andrei brought a toy car out of my son’s room, I realized that they were hiding not only betrayal in the house — something bigger was being prepared.
It was morning, seven o’clock. In the kitchen, a pot was quietly boiling, while raindrops struck the windowpane as if someone were knocking from outside. Misha sat at the table and spun the wheels of the red car. He took this car everywhere, keeping it even under his pillow while sleeping.
“Grandma will take me today?” he asked me.
“Why are you asking me?”
Misha shrugged.
“That’s what she told me. She told me I shouldn’t return home until she called me.”
The glass I was holding in my hand became so cold that I could no longer feel my fingers.
“Grandma told you this?”
“Yes. And she told me not to tell you anything.”
That morning I thought for the first time that my child had become not only a witness, but part of their plan. The thought was so painful that I leaned against the wall.
Andrei came in at half past eight. The smell of the wet street followed him from his coat, and he had such a calm smile on his lips, as if nothing had changed in our house.
“I’ll come late today,” he told me and poured himself coffee. “We’re finishing a presentation with Victoria.”
“With Victoria again?”
“Alina, don’t start.”
“I haven’t started anything yet.”
He dropped the spoon into the cup. The metallic clink cut through the room.
“My mother will take Misha. And you go to work and don’t ruin the evening.”
“Why should she take him?”
Andrei looked directly at me for the first time.
“Because the child is coughing. And you attach more importance to your career than to your family.”
These words were already familiar. Six weeks earlier, when Misha had a high fever, he had told me exactly the same thing. Then I believed him. But now each phrase sounded like a text prepared in advance.
I did not go to work. I called my father, Oleg. The house where we lived belonged to him. After the wedding he had offered us to live there, but he had never transferred the ownership right to Andrei.
“Dad, are the recordings from the cameras saved at home?”
“Why are you asking me?”
“Just answer me.”
Dad was silent for several seconds.
“Behind the wardrobe in your room there is an old backup memory device. If the system was disconnected, something may have remained there.”
When I returned home in the evening, I moved the wardrobe. In the dust I found a small black device, and on it was a piece of paper attached in my own hand: “Don’t throw it away until you are calm.”
I was no longer calm.
On Wednesday, at ten at night, Dad came to me. He put the device on the table and turned it on. The front yard appeared on the screen, with a date from six weeks earlier. At ten in the morning Irina’s car entered. Half an hour later the cameras were turned off. Three hours later they turned on again.
“Did this happen only that day?” Dad asked me.
“No. The same thing repeats every time Misha is ill or I return late.”
Dad tightened his jaw.
“Does Andrei know the system code?”
“Only he and you.”
“I didn’t turn it off.”
At that moment my phone lit up. Andrei was writing to me: “If Misha is coughing again, I’ll call my mother. You must not miss work.”
Dad read the message and carefully asked me:
“Should you call the police?”
“Not yet. I want to know how far they have gone.”
The next morning Andrei left his phone beside the bed. I did not touch it. The screen lit up by itself.
Victoria was writing: “Is everything in force tomorrow?”
The next message was shorter: “Turn off the cameras first.”
The third said: “Tell Irina to take Misha for a long walk. I don’t want the child to see us again.”
I took photographs and returned the phone to exactly the same place. I already knew that this was not only my husband’s betrayal. They were carrying out a plan in my house, with my child and my trust.
But another message appeared on the screen — from Irina.
I slowly moved my hand toward the phone, and at that very moment a key turned in the lock. Andrei had returned. His footsteps were approaching in the corridor, while my finger touched the button to open the message…
The message opened fully on the screen: “I’ll take Misha after breakfast. Only this time tell him beforehand not to return home for the toy.”
For several seconds my breath stopped. So that was why Irina took my child out of the house every time. She was not helping Misha. She was leaving the house empty.
“Alina?” Andrei’s voice sounded from the corridor. “Are you here?”
I put the phone on the table and went to the window. Outside, the rain had stopped, but traces of water still looked dark on the glass surface.
“I’m in the child’s room,” I answered.
Andrei came in and immediately looked at the phone. His gaze stopped on the screen only for a moment, but I saw that moment. The calm disappeared from his face.
“I left my phone,” he said.
“I know.”
“Were you looking for something?”
“No. It lit up by itself.”
He took the phone and put it in his pocket.
“Why are you talking to me like that?”
“How am I talking to you?”
“As if I had done something to you.”
Then Misha appeared at the room’s door. He was still holding the red car.
“Dad, will Grandma take me today too?”
Andrei looked at his son, then at me.
“If Mother doesn’t have a problem with it.”
“I didn’t say I had a problem,” I said calmly.
The corner of Andrei’s lip tightened.
“Then don’t create a problem where there isn’t one.”
His voice was low, but even Misha felt the tension and pressed the car to his chest.
“Misha, go and wait for me by the window,” I told him. “Mom has business with Dad.”
As soon as the child left, Andrei came closer to me.
“What were you checking?”
“The cameras.”
His face changed immediately.
“Are you intruding into my private life?”
“My father bought this house. And the cameras are here so that the child is safe.”
“Nothing threatens the child.”
“Then why did the system turn off every time your mother came?”
Andrei lowered his eyes. He had no answer, but silence was also an answer.
That same evening I showed Dad everything. We transferred copies of the photographs to his computer and saved them on a separate memory card. Then two technicians examined the camera control panel at the house. They discovered that the shutdown commands were being sent not from the internal panel, but from my husband’s work laptop.
“This is no longer a simple suspicion,” Dad said.
“We still don’t know what they are planning.”
“I know what they are planning,” he replied. “They are trying to take control of the house and the child away from you.”
Irina came that evening. It was six o’clock in the evening. She held sweets bought for the child, and on her face was the kind of smile I had once considered warm.
“Is Misha ready?” she asked me.
“You can’t take him today.”
Irina’s smile disappeared.
“Why?”
“Because I decided so.”
“Alina, the child needs a routine.”
“The child also needs the truth.”
She looked at me frightened.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you will never again ask Misha to keep a secret.”
Irina squeezed the packet of sweets in her hand so hard that the plastic was crushed.
“The child is inventing something.”
“A five-year-old child cannot invent the time when the cameras were turned off.”
“Did Andrei tell you something?”
“You tell me first.”
At that moment Andrei appeared in the doorway. He seemed to have been waiting for exactly this scene.
“Mother, go into the room,” he told her.
“You tell her too that all this is a misunderstanding,” Irina answered me.
Andrei looked toward me and saw for the first time that I was no longer crying.
“Alina, let’s talk.”
“No. Now you will listen to me.”
I picked up the phone and went toward him.
“I have the camera recordings. The messages too. And I know that Victoria was here several times.”
Irina lowered her eyes. Andrei, however, smiled strangely.
“The recordings?” he said. “Interesting.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means that you see only half.”
At that moment Dad appeared behind him.
“And you will learn the rest tomorrow, at ten in the morning, at my lawyer’s,” he said.
The color disappeared from Andrei’s face. Irina looked toward Dad, as if realizing for the first time that I was not the only one standing against them.
That night, before they left the house, Andrei quietly said to me:
“If you take this all the way, you will never see Misha again as you see him now.”
I gripped the door handle.
“Is that a threat?”
“A warning.”
The next morning we went to the lawyer’s office. Dad put two folders on the table. One contained the camera recordings, and the other contained a document that frightened Andrei the most.
The lawyer began opening the folder, but had not yet touched the first page when Victoria entered the room and quietly said:
“Alina, before you read this, there is one thing you must know…”
“I will testify against you,” Victoria said and closed the door behind her.
Such silence fell in the room that the ticking of the wall clock sounded loudly. Andrei stood up from his chair.
“Victoria, what are you doing here?”
“What I should have done from the beginning.”
Irina covered her mouth with her hand.
“Girl, think about what you are saying.”
Victoria put a small memory card on the table.
“Everything is here. Messages, voice recordings, and the file Andrei was asking me to sign.”
Andrei moved toward her, but my father raised his hand in front.
“Nobody move from their place.”
The lawyer inserted the card into the computer. A recording of a conversation appeared on the screen. The first voice belonged to Andrei.
“When Alina comes late, I’ll turn off the cameras. Mother will take the child out. Then Victoria will come.”
Irina’s voice sounded in the recording:
“The main thing is that Misha does not return for the toy.”
The third voice belonged to Victoria.
“If Alina becomes suspicious, tell her that she attaches too much importance to work. In the end she will start apologizing herself.”
I was looking at the screen, but it was as if I was no longer in the room. I wanted someone to tell me that this was a mistake. That the voices belonged to other people. But Andrei’s breathing and Irina’s lowered head confirmed everything.
“This was obtained illegally,” Andrei said.
Victoria smiled, though her eyes were tearful.
“These are letters sent from my phone. I saved them myself.”
“Why?”
“Because when you wanted to blackmail Alina in my name, I realized that I would be the next victim.”
The lawyer opened the second folder.
“Now the ownership document. The house is entirely in Mr. Oleg’s name. Mrs. Alina has the right to live here in writing, while the issue of guardianship over her minor child is defined by a separate document.”
Andrei seized the chair.
“You will not be able to do this.”
“We already have,” Dad answered. “This morning the house codes, camera passwords, and access to the bank accounts were changed. You no longer have the right to enter this house or take the child without permission.”
Irina quietly murmured:
“Alina, I only wanted to preserve the family.”
“The family?” I asked. “You assigned my child to hide the truth from his mother.”
I remembered Misha’s words: “Can adults also keep bad secrets?”
This time I said the answer aloud.
“Children should not keep secrets for people who deceive them.”
Andrei raised his head.
“I loved you.”
“Love does not turn off cameras.”
His face collapsed. Victoria stood by the wall, rubbing her hands together. Irina was crying, but I no longer took a step toward her.
Before the hearing ended, the lawyer took out another sheet.
“There is one more issue. Mrs. Irina has submitted a request for the right to take the child temporarily, which she filed yesterday. The application says that Alina is psychologically unstable and cannot care for the child.”
I looked at Andrei.
“You prepared this.”
“I simply wanted Misha to be safe.”
“From me?”
“You are too emotional.”
The lawyer calmly pointed to the recording.
“You cannot sign this application. Because the information indicated as its basis directly contradicts the camera recordings, the doctor’s certificates, and your own correspondence.”
For the first time Andrei could say nothing.
However, at that very moment my father’s phone rang. He answered, listened for several seconds, and his face changed.
“What happened?” I asked.
Dad slowly looked at me.
“The school is calling. Someone tried this morning to take Misha using another person’s name.”
Andrei immediately turned toward the door.
“I was not there.”
“I haven’t said that yet,” Dad answered.
A woman was saying something on the other end of the phone. Then Dad hung up and quietly said:
“The school camera recorded the car’s plate number. The car is registered in Irina’s name. But Victoria was sitting behind the wheel.”
Everyone stared at Victoria. She shook her head.
“I was not near the school today.”
At that moment a message from an unknown number arrived on her phone. She read it, turned pale, and put the screen on the table.
“If you do not say where the second recording is, Misha will leave the house anyway.”
I looked at the screen.
Andrei was silent.
And then I realized that what I had known until then was only their plan. Someone third was already acting — and the most terrible story was still ahead…
