Part 4 — My husband asked me not to reveal one strange secret to our child, but his mother lost color on the phone screen

Dad photographed the message and immediately called the police.

Andrei paced around the room. For the first time I saw how he was losing control. His fingers were trembling, his breathing was rapid, but he still tried to give orders.

“Everyone calm down,” he said. “This is only a misunderstanding.”

“No,” the lawyer answered. “This is already an attempted child abduction.”

Andrei turned toward him.

“You are my lawyer. Protect me.”

The lawyer took off his glasses.

“From this moment, I am not anymore.”

This short sentence sounded stronger than any shouting.

Irina sat down on a chair.

“Andrei, what have you done?”

“You be quiet!”

“I trusted you.”

“You took Misha out of the house!”

“Because you told me we had to protect him from Alina!”

I watched them and felt a strange emptiness. A few hours earlier these people had been called my family. Now each of them was trying to hand their own guilt over to someone else.

The police came in forty minutes. The officer first saw copies of the message, then requested the recording sent from the school and the camera archive.

“Who directed the attempt to take the child?” he asked me.

Victoria pressed her lips together.

“All I know is that Andrei met a woman at a hotel parking lot during the last week. It was not Victoria and it was not Irina.”

Andrei suddenly stopped.

“Enough!”

“No,” I said. “Now it is no longer enough.”

The officer looked at him.

“Who is this woman?”

Andrei did not answer.

Dad opened his laptop and displayed the second folder. There was a camera recording that had remained on the memory device from the old system. In the recording, Andrei stood at night in a parking lot with an unknown man. Papers passed between them.

The unknown man said:

“If Alina leaves the house to you, you will have influence over the child.”

Andrei’s answer was clearly heard:

“She cannot take the house from me if she says that the mother has a mental problem. I need only a few days.”

!!!  Před svatbou mi vnuk zašeptal, co nevěsta udělala jeho matce — a když ukázal na její pokoj, ztuhla

I was looking at the monitor and it was as if I were standing in the ruins of my own marriage.

The officer rewound the recording several times.

“Who is this man?”

“A private intermediary,” Andrei said. “He was only giving me advice.”

“Was the plan to take the child also advice?”

Andrei could not utter a word.

Then he heard his own words himself. His face was visible on the screen, while his voice stood alive in the room: “Misha must leave the house while Alina is at work. Then we will say that the child was in danger.”

Andrei fell into the chair.

For the first time I saw not anger but realization on his face. He understood that the man he had played as a strong and clever husband before everyone now stood only before his own voice.

“Did I say this?” he asked quietly.

“Yes,” the officer answered. “You yourself.”

Irina began to cry.

“My son, why?”

Andrei looked at her.

“Because Alina was taking everything away from me.”

“I took nothing away from you,” I said. “You lost everything yourself when you decided to use my child’s fear as a weapon.”

That evening Andrei and Irina were taken for questioning. Victoria gave testimony and left the house. She stopped at the door.

“I’m sorry,” she said to me.

“For what?”

“For realizing late what kind of person I was dealing with.”

“The important thing is that in the end you told the truth.”

The next day I entered Misha’s room. His red car was no longer on the bed. He met me in the corridor, because Misha himself had moved it there.

“I left it here,” he told me. “So that if someone tells me again to keep a secret, I can look at the car and tell you.”

I got down on my knees and hugged him.

“You will no longer have to carry secrets alone.”

The wardrobe door in the room had been left open. The white coat that Irina had worn that day was gone. I could not throw it away without washing it, but neither could I bear seeing it. In the end I packed it and asked Dad to take it out of the house.

Only an empty hanger remained.

It was the most exact picture of what had happened.

Three weeks later we officially stopped living together. The court decision came soon: Andrei was forbidden to take the child arbitrarily, while Irina could meet Misha only under supervision. The remaining consequences followed from their own actions — the agency dismissed Andrei, Irina left her job, and Victoria began working in another city.

I did not expect them to be punished.

I simply wanted no longer to be there to save them.

Two months later I turned a small room into a ceramics workshop. Before, I returned home tired after work; now in the evenings I made cups from clay. White dust remained on my hands, but this dust resembled peace.

Misha drew at the table beside me. One day he drew me a house, a large sun in front, and two figures.

“This is me,” he told me. “And this is you.”

“Where is Dad?”

Misha put down the pencil.

“If he wants to return, first he must learn to knock on the door.”

I laughed. For the first time in a long while, from the heart.

In December the first snow came to the city. Misha stood by the window and counted the flakes. I installed a new camera in the kitchen, but only Dad and I knew the password. All the doors of the house closed peacefully.

One evening I received a letter from Andrei. It was short.

“I want to talk to you at least once. I understood everything. Victoria left me, I lost my job, and Mother is angry with me. I know I deserve this, but I cannot bear missing Misha. Please open the door for me.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi padre me presentó como una vergüenza ante el prometido de mi hermana, pero su saludo hizo que toda la mesa dejara de respirar

Earlier I would have answered such a letter immediately. I would have explained, comforted him, and forgiven even what no one should forgive.

But now I wrote only one sentence:

“You will be able to meet Misha according to the procedure established by law. But you will not return to my house.”

Then I put the phone down.

I did not feel hatred.

Nor the desire for victory.

Only freedom.

That same night Misha put the red car on my worktable. The paint had come off one wheel of the car, but it still moved.

“Mom, tomorrow I will draw a new house,” he told me.

“What will it be like?”

“One where adults tell the truth.”

I went to the window. Snow was falling silently on the yard, the same yard where once the cameras were turned off and people entered quietly.

Now everything was visible.

I left Misha’s red car on the windowsill so that it would touch the morning sun.

This time not a single secret remained in the house.

Missed the beginning?
