Part 4 — I lived with my child in a shed for two years, but when I came to the gate of my own house, Andrei lost color

…the second application came from the notary.

Mariam took the phone from Andrei’s hand and turned on speakerphone.

“Please repeat that once more,” she said.

A tense male voice sounded from the other side of the phone.

“We received a notification that the owner of the house filed an official statement about fraud. The case names Andrei Kovalenko, a false power of attorney, and a bank application.”

Andrei grabbed Mariam’s arm.

“Turn it off.”

“Let go of me,” she said calmly.

“This is my family.”

“Family does not give you the right to falsify someone else’s property.”

Andrei let go of her, but it was already too late. Everyone was listening. Natalia stood frozen, while Lyudmila clung to the stair railing.

“Who filed the statement?” I asked.

“The owner of the property,” Mariam answered. “Your name went through the registry this morning.”

Grandpa put his arms around my shoulders.

“Now Andrei knows that he has lost control.”

Andrei took out his phone and called someone.

“Davit, come urgently. You have to stop everything.”

He received an answer a few seconds later.

“I am no longer getting involved in this case,” said the other voice. “You told me the documents were legal. If a video recording exists, no lawyer will defend you anymore.”

“I paid you money!”

“That money cannot save my name.”

The call ended.

Andrei dialed another number. This time nobody answered.

His fingers were trembling.

Natalia removed the sapphire pendant and held it in her hand.

“Is this stolen too?”

Andrei turned toward her.

“I bought it for you.”

“No. You told me it was jewelry from your mother’s family.”

“Natalia…”

“You told me that your past was over.”

“Be quiet.”

“No, you be quiet now.”

There was such pain in her voice that for the first time I felt sorry for her too. Not Andrei. Natalia.

She did not understand that she had entered the lie of a man who did not even remember one birthday of my child.

Mariam played the recording from the beginning again.

Andrei’s voice rang through the entire hall.

“She has no money. She cannot take the child and cannot reach court.”

Andrei leaned against the wall.

I looked at my own husband and, for the first time, heard his words the way another person would hear them. Not with love, not with the hope that he would ever change, but from the outside.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Encontrei meu filho acorrentado numa montanha e, quando mostrei os documentos à minha esposa, ela parou de sorrir

It was his own voice.

His own laughter.

His own plan.

Misha squeezed my hand.

“Mom, let’s not stay here anymore.”

“Never again,” I told him.

That same evening the police came. Nobody was arrested. For now they only recorded the recordings, documents, and explanations. But it was already visible on Andrei’s face that his greatest fear was not ending up in a cell, but the truth spreading.

The wedding guests quietly left the house.

The flowers remained on the stairs.

Natalia handed the pendant to Mariam.

“It belongs to Olena,” she said.

Then she came to me.

“I didn’t know.”

“I didn’t know either,” I answered. “That is why I will not blame you.”

She lowered her head and left.

Lyudmila remained until the end. She first looked at her son, then at me.

“Andrei always said that you could not take care of the family.”

“Did you ever call me and ask how we were?”

Lyudmila pressed her lips together.

“No.”

“Then now you know at least.”

She could not find an answer.

That night we stayed in the same house. We opened a small room for Misha, but he could not sleep on the bed. In the end he lay beside me and wrapped his hand around my wrist, as if he was afraid that in the morning we would wake up in the shed again.

The garden lights could be seen through the window.

Everything was beautiful.

But in that room I realized for the first time that a house is not walls. A house is the place where a child is not afraid that his father will disappear again.

In the following days the calls did not stop.

At first Andrei begged.

“Olena, come on, let’s settle this calmly.”

Then he threatened me.

“If you continue the case, you will no longer be able to see Misha.”

Then he cried.

“I did all this for the sake of the family.”

I answered none of the calls anymore. Mariam saved every message.

Once Andrei came to the house, but security stopped him at the gate. He saw me from a distance. He held a small box in his hand.

“This is for you,” he called to me.

“You will not enter here again.”

“Give me only five minutes.”

“I had two years of five minutes to ask for. You did not come even once.”

His face collapsed.

“I am your husband.”

“You are no longer the person I trust.”

“But I am Misha’s father.”

“Fatherhood is not only a surname.”

Security turned him back.

Several weeks later, at the preliminary court hearing, Andrei’s own recording was played for him. He sat on a wooden bench, with a new lawyer beside him. The recording began with the same words again.

“She has no money. She cannot take the child.”

Andrei lowered his head.

The judge asked:

“Is this your voice?”

After a long silence he answered:

“Yes.”

“Are these your words?”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you denying?”

For the first time Andrei could say nothing.

I watched him listening and felt a strange peace. Not joy. Not revenge.

Simply, that day I was no longer trying to explain his actions in his place.

Several months later I returned to the shed.

The house was already emptied. The old stove was no longer there, nor was the blue basin filled with water, and Misha’s notebooks were no longer arranged on the overturned box.

The little copper bell still hung on the door.

The wind touched it and it rang quietly.

Misha stood beside me.

“Should we leave this here?” he asked.

“No. It will come with us.”

“Why?”

“Because it knows where we started.”

That week I rented a small apartment in the city center while the house was being renovated. In the mornings I returned to the accounting course. In the evenings I helped Misha with his studies. For the first time in a long while, when I went shopping I no longer counted the prices with fear.

Grandpa came often.

One day Misha showed him a drawing. In the drawing there was a large house, a green garden, and three people holding hands. The sun was drawn above, and below was a small red bell.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Us,” Misha answered. “And the bell protects the house.”

The first snow came in December.

I was standing by the kitchen window and drinking tea when Misha shouted that everything in the yard had turned white. The copper bell on the door was covered with small snowflakes.

That same evening I received the last letter from Andrei.

“I want to come back. Now I understand everything. Natalia left me, my mother no longer speaks to me, and the lawyers will handle the case. But I am still your family. Wait for me.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I forwarded it to Mariam.

She asked me only one question:

“Do you want to answer?”

“Yes.”

I wrote:

“You did not lose your family, Andrei. You left it yourself when you decided that our poverty would be useful for covering your lie. You may be Misha’s father, but I no longer promise you a return to my life.”

I wrote nothing more.

The next morning, when leaving the house, I took the copper bell in my hand and hung it on the new door.

Misha waited beside me.

“Is it our house now?” he asked.

I smiled at him.

“Now it is our peace.”

The bell rang.

And this time nobody who wanted to run away returned home.

Missed the beginning?
