On the Christmas Table, Mother Threw a Wine-Soaked Napkin in My Face, but Father Lost Color When He Saw My Husband Outside the Door

My mother threw a wine-soaked napkin in my face and called my five-year-old child an orphan, before my husband, returning from a nine-month military mission, stood between us like a wall.

All this happened on Christmas Eve, in the suburbs of Ohio, at my parents’ house, around eight o’clock. The Christmas tree lights were blinking, the smell of cinnamon and roasted meat hung in the air, and in the middle of the table stood a small red ceramic angel whose left wingtip was broken off. Lily’s grandmother had given her this item, and every year the child hung it on the very first branch.

Dessert had not yet been brought when my sister, Lauren, put her glass on the table and leaned toward me.

“It is pleasant when you come empty-handed, while Ethan is playing soldier somewhere in the sand.”

I put my fork on the plate.

“I did not ask anyone to save me.”

Lauren snickered. Mother, Diane, did not laugh. I only looked at her fingers: she had clutched the red napkin with her fingernails as if she already knew that she would use it as a weapon that evening.

For nine months, while Ethan was on a dangerous military mission, Mother told relatives as if my husband had abandoned me, his salary was laughable, and Lily and I were living in hardship. But the truth was completely different. I worked from home, took care of Lily, carefully saved Ethan’s allowance, and we told no one about our plans.

“Then why did Father give us money in the spring?” Lauren asked. “Mother said even your electricity had been cut off.”

My father, Robert, looked at his plate. His ears immediately turned red.

“It was repayment of a loan,” I said. “Father took money from my savings for the wages of his contractors. He returned everything to me.”

Silence covered the table like a heavy blanket.

Mother jumped up so quickly that the oak chair tipped backward and fell noisily onto the floor.

“You are an ungrateful little liar!”

“Mother, I have bank statements.”

“You always humiliate everyone!”

“I only told the truth.”

Lily began to cry beside me. In her hands she held the broken-winged angel and squeezed it so tightly that her white fingers became tense.

Mother picked up the napkin soaked with wine and threw it straight into my face. Cold liquid splashed into my eyes. For several seconds I could see nothing.

“You are a parasite!” she shouted. “You are dragging your child to the bottom with a man who cannot provide!”

Then she pointed toward Lily.

“Take this burden and get out of my house! Your child is an orphan, her father does not care about her at all!”

Lily’s crying split the room.

!!!  Part 4 — On the night of our wedding, my husband threw me out of my own house with his ex, but his face lost its color when he saw how calm I was

Ethan stood up from his chair before I could say anything. After nine months of a mission he was thin and tired, but there was such silence in his eyes that Mother stepped back for the first time.

Ethan stood between me and Mother.

“We are leaving.”

“This is my house!” Mother screamed.

“And this is my family,” he answered.

I picked up Lily, put the angel from the table into my pocket, and walked toward the door. Lauren was still smiling, as if she had already won. Father followed us as far as the porch.

“Forgive me, Em,” he said to me.

“For what, Dad?”

He could not answer me.

No one said a word until we reached home. Lily fell asleep in the back seat, and she was still clutching the sleeve of my jacket in her hand. When we arrived home, Ethan carried her to her room, covered her with a blanket, and stood by her bed for a long time.

At midnight we sat alone in the living room. The blue light of the laptop made Ethan’s face look stern.

“Emily, military security sent me a notification,” he told me.

“What happened?”

“Someone carried out a deep background check on me.”

“Who?”

Ethan tightened his jaw.

“They found the documents for the new house.”

Three weeks earlier we had quietly bought a four-bedroom brick house outside Columbus. Ethan had secretly spent a month installing cameras, alarms, and reinforced locks. I told Mother nothing, because I knew how she looked at our money.

At that moment the phone rang.

It was Father.

His voice was fading between breathing and crying.

“Emily, Lauren hired a private investigator. They found the house. They know about your assets.”

My stomach clenched.

“Why?”

“Your mother did something terrible. She needs money to hide everything before we go under too.”

In the background, a car engine growled aggressively.

Father added quietly:

“She is going to your new house. And she will do anything to get the money…”

The phone almost fell from my hand. Ethan immediately stood up and turned on the door-camera screen. Outside, in the snow, there was only an empty road.

“Call the police,” he told me.

“I need to talk to Father first.”

Robert whispered into the phone:

“Your mother signed documents in your name. She says that if you do not give her money, she will make you lose the house and take Lily away from you.”

“What documents?”

“I do not know. But I stole copies from her office. Lauren caught me, and now they are threatening me too.”

The door alarm suddenly beeped.

Ethan picked up Lily and carried her toward the bedroom.

“Do not come out until I tell you.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo exigió mi bono frente a su madre, pero cuando coloqué una carpeta azul sobre la mesa, dejó de sonreír

A black car appeared on the screen. Mother was sitting behind the wheel. Beside her stood an unfamiliar man holding a heavy bag.

Mother looked at the camera and smiled mockingly.

“Open the door, Emily!” her voice came from the outside speaker. “This house is not yours.”

Ethan looked toward me.

“She still does not know that everything will be recorded.”

But then I received a new message on my phone. The sender was Father. It contained only one sentence: “If she opens what was found in the office, you will understand why your mother hid Ethan’s mission from you.”

Footsteps sounded in the hallway. The alarm shrieked again. Ethan walked toward the door, while I clutched the broken-winged angel in my pocket.

The door lock clicked, and on the screen the unfamiliar man raised a folder…

The unfamiliar man held the folder in front of the camera. Ethan stopped at the door but did not open it.

“Did you call the police?” he asked from outside.

“Who are you?” Ethan answered sternly.

“My name is Sam Harper. I am a private investigator. And this woman will make you open your door by force if you do not listen right now.”

Mother shouted:

“Do not believe him! He is stealing my daughter’s house!”

I moved closer to the screen. Mother’s face looked pale in the snowlight of the camera, but the same anger that she had had at the Christmas table still stood in her eyes.

“Sam, where did you get the documents made out in my name?” I asked.

He put the folder on the small shelf under the camera.

“Because your mother created these documents. They say that you supposedly granted her the right to sell your house and transfer the money to her.”

The strength left my knees.

“I did not sign anything.”

“I know,” Sam said. “The signature is forged.”

Ethan opened the small window in the door and took the folder. Inside were a copy of my identification, bank statements, and a document on which my signature supposedly stood. But the letters were slanted strangely. Mother did not know that in childhood I always put a small ink dot in exactly the same place.

“This is not only about the house,” Sam said. “Diane transferred money from your savings to her company’s account. Then she used your father’s contractors’ money to pay old debts.”},{

Mother turned her face away.

“It was a temporary loan!”

“A loan is followed by repayment,” I told her.

“I did it because of you!” she shouted. “I was supporting the family!”

At that moment Father called me. Mother also heard it ring and became alarmed.

“Emily, I recorded everything,” Robert said. “I obtained an audio recording from her office. Your mother tells Lauren that she would lure you and Ethan into the house, take the money, and then say that you were psychologically unstable.”

!!!  I was asking to adopt five children when the judge asked my reason and everyone’s face in the courtroom changed

Lauren’s voice rang out clearly in the recording:

“If Ethan resists us, we will say that he was aggressive.”

Mother lost color for the first time.

“Robert, how dare you?”

“I stayed silent long enough,” he answered. “Now my silence will become testimony against you.”

Ethan looked at Sam.

“Has all this been handed over to law enforcement?”

“Yes. But there is one more thing you need to know.”

Sam raised his phone. A new email appeared on the screen, and the sender was the legal department of a military agency.

Ethan read it and his face changed.

“What does it say?” I asked.

He could not answer me. Sam said quietly:

“The case against your family concerns not only forgery. They used confidential information about your mission to learn when you would be home and when the house would be unprotected. This is already a federal matter.”

Mother stepped back.

“No… I only wanted money.”

But outside, the headlights of another car had already appeared. Red and blue lights flashed on the snow.

Ethan took my hand.

“Now they will come.”

And I realized that what frightened Mother most was not losing the house, but that this time no one would be able to hide her lies.

A heavy blow sounded on the door, and an officer’s voice came from outside:

“Diane Hayes, open the door. We have a warrant for your arrest…”
