Part 4 — When I Returned Home, I Found a Purple Mark on My Child’s Back, and My Wife’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

The lawyer’s voice fell silent for several seconds.

“What recording are you talking about?”

“The director says Mariana did not go to the clinic only because of Valentina. You were there too, two months ago.”

“Me? I have never been there.”

“That is exactly why you must come here. Right now.”

That night I went to the clinic again. It was raining outside. Streetlights stretched across the asphalt, and every puddle looked like a shard of glass.

Fernanda stayed in the car, while I entered the director’s office with the lawyer.

A small voice recorder lay on the desk.

The director, a man named Raúl Mendoza, sat uncomfortably. He twisted the cap of a pen with his fingers.

“You did not make this recording by accident,” I said.

“Mariana was not my patient. She came here as a consultant. She told me she had problems in a child-custody case.”

“In my custody?”

“No. Against you.”

The lawyer turned on the recorder.

First Mariana’s voice was heard.

“If Diego finds out that Valentina is afraid of me, he will take everything away from me.”

Then another woman’s voice.

“Then you must create evidence that he himself is unstable.”

The chair seemed to be driven into the floor beneath me.

Mariana answered:

“His trips are enough. I raise the child all the time. If I say that he is not at home and often gets angry, they will believe me.”

Raúl sat silently.

“Who was the other woman?” I asked.

“Mariana’s lawyer. She wanted you to be ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and to turn Valentina against you.”

The recording continued.

“First the child must believe me. If she says that she loves her father, the plan will fail.”

Then Mariana’s voice became tense.

“Sometimes one squeeze is enough. Then I tell her that everything is her fault. Children learn fear quickly.”

I looked at my own hands. My fingers were trembling.

“Turn it off,” I whispered.

But suddenly my voice was heard in the recording.

“Valentina, if anyone ever tells you that the family will fall apart because you told the truth, do not believe it. Preserving a family does not mean hiding a child’s pain.”

I raised my head.

“That is my voice, but I never said that here.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — O comandante tentou expulsar-me da primeira classe diante de todos, mas quando voltei ao avião, o sorriso dele desapareceu

Raúl lowered his eyes.

“Mariana recorded this in your house. You were once telling your daughter that everything would be all right. She hid a camera and a recorder in the kitchen. She later sent the recording to us to prove that you were exerting emotional pressure on the child.”

The lawyer opened a file on the screen.

The full version of the recording showed not my pressure, but Valentina’s fear. After every sentence she looked at her mother, as if waiting for permission to breathe.

Raúl could barely speak.

“I told Mariana that it was illegal and that there were signs the child was being harmed. She replied that if I reported anyone, she would destroy my license. Today I found out that you had already discovered everything.”

The lawyer copied the recording and sent it to the investigator.

“This is enough for Mariana’s statements against you to be canceled,” he told me. “But the case does not end here.”

Just then an unknown number appeared on my phone.

“Am I speaking to Diego Alvarez?” a man asked.

“Who are you?”

“A man whom your wife’s lawyer paid. I signed a document confirming that you would supposedly abandon your child.”

“Where is this document?”

“Mariana no longer has it. I kept a copy.”

“Why are you calling me now?”

The man exhaled heavily.

“Because Mariana called me again today and said you had to be silenced. Then she added that, if necessary, she would take Valentina too.”

My blood froze.

“Where is my child?”

“In a safe place,” the lawyer said. “Fernanda left her there. But Mariana is going there.”

I ran down to the car.

That night the security service found Mariana near my parents’ house. She was pounding on the door and repeating that she only wanted to see her daughter.

“Valentina is my daughter!” she shouted.

My mother did not open the door.

“She is your daughter, but you are no longer her safety,” she told her through the closed door.

The police took Mariana away. The court issued a temporary restraining order. Later, based on the evidence, a case was opened for domestic violence and creating a danger to a child.

I sat in the courtroom beside Valentina’s drawing. It showed a small house with two windows and a large yellow sun.

!!!  Mi esposo me entregó el divorcio después del parto y me invitó a su boda; pero al verme, su sonrisa se volvió frágil

Mariana’s lawyer told me:

“If you agree, the process will end quickly. She will admit a certain responsibility, and you will no longer speak publicly.”

“Are you offering me hiding the truth from my child again?”

“You also want this to end.”

“Ending it and hiding it are not the same.”

For the first time in the courtroom, Mariana looked toward me.

Her face was tired.

“Diego, please. I was just alone.”

“Being alone may be an explanation. Not a reason.”

“You were always leaving.”

“I was going to work. And you were using the child’s fear to make both of us obey you.”

Her voice failed.

The judge listened to the recording. Then he read the doctors’ conclusions, photographs, messages, and the black notebook. By the decision, I was granted custody of Valentina, while Mariana was forbidden to approach the child without treatment and supervision.

For a long time, the punishment did not feel like a victory.

That same evening I entered Valentina’s room. Her small colored pencils were arranged on the bed. I replaced the door handle, but kept the old metal handle in a box.

It was the object on which my daughter’s back had written the truth.

Several weeks later Valentina was seeing a psychologist. At first she shrank at every loud step. Whenever the door opened, she always asked me:

“Dad, may I come in?”

“This is your home. You always can.”

Little by little, her voice returned.

One morning, on the first day of snow, I made hot cocoa in the kitchen. Valentina stood by the window and watched the white yard outside.

“Dad, what if I spill juice now?”

“We’ll clean it together.”

“You won’t get angry?”

“I will never punish you for being a child.”

She watched me for a while.

“Then may I draw again?”

“Draw whatever you want.”

That day she created a new drawing. The house had no door. It had only large windows, and two people stood in front of it.

Within several months I reduced my work trips. I turned down new projects and moved to a small architectural office in the city. The salary was lower, but I came home in the evenings.

Valentina kept one habit: before going to sleep, she went to the door and checked the handle.

!!!  Mein Vater erklärte meine Villa zur Beute meiner Schwester, doch als ich wortlos ging, verschwand sein selbstsicheres Lächeln

One evening she found the metal handle stored in the old box.

“Why do you keep this?”

“So I remember how strong you were.”

“I wasn’t strong. I was afraid.”

“Telling the truth is strength even when you are afraid.”

She touched the handle with her finger and then placed it in my hand.

Mariana wrote to me one more time at the end. The message was short.

“I am continuing treatment. I want you to listen to me at least once. Can you come back for Valentina?”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Earlier, I would have run immediately after receiving a letter like that. I would have taken her anger, tears, and threats onto myself again. But now I knew that compassion does not mean sacrificing my child’s safety.

In reply I wrote only this:

“You must take responsibility for your life. And Valentina’s life will never again return to a place where she was afraid.”

Then I blocked the number.

Outside, snow was falling quietly.

Valentina sat on the floor and colored a drawing of a new house. This time the door had a yellow handle.

The old metal handle lay on my desk.

Now it was no longer a sign of fear.

It was the door that, at last, we had opened.

Missed the beginning?
