Part 4 — My husband and his lover put something in my wine and forced me to drink it, but my calm voice changed Daniel’s face

That night the house became simultaneously very large and very small.

The police took Daniel and Vanessa into separate rooms. I stood by the kitchen door and watched as they put the things into bags.

The wine bottle.

The silver spoon.

The small white packet.

My hands were still trembling.

Miranda put her hand on my shoulder.

“I’ll take you to a hotel now.”

“No,” I answered. “First I want to know who called me.”

The officer nodded.

“We will find out that number.”

Daniel called to me from the hallway.

“Claire!”

His voice was no longer commanding as before.

I approached him, but stopped far enough away.

“What do you want?”

“Vanessa is making everything up. I did not want to kill you.”

“Then what did you want?”

He opened his mouth and closed it again.

The answer was written on his face.

He wanted me to disappear while he himself remained innocent.

“You never thought about me,” I told him.

“That is not true.”

“Today you poisoned my wine.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I only believed Vanessa.”

This was the first time he hid his own guilt behind someone else’s back.

The next day the investigator brought us a recording. A hidden camera was found in Vanessa’s car. She herself did not know that the police had installed the camera before coming to the house.

We were all sitting in a small room.

Daniel’s voice sounded in the recording.

“Put enough in the glass for her to lose consciousness, nothing more.”

Vanessa’s voice followed.

“Then?”

“Then put money in her bag. We will call the police in the morning. I will say that she has become paranoid lately and steals money.”

The recording continued.

“What if she survives and starts talking?”

Daniel laughed.

“No one will believe a woman who destroys her own husband.”

The strength left my knees.

The most painful thing was not that he said it.

But how certain he was.

Daniel watched the recording. His own voice kept returning in the room again and again. Finally he covered his face with his hands.

!!!  Mein Sohn strich mich aus der Familie und lud alle zum letzten Weihnachtsessen ein – doch nach meinem ruhigen Satz verstummte sein Lächeln

“Turn it off.”

“You said this,” I told him.

“I know.”

“No. Now you heard it for the first time.”

Miranda put a new document on the table.

“The bank confirmed that Daniel transferred funds from your joint account. The apartment belonging to Vanessa was bought in his name. In addition, correspondence with the man who supplied the substance was found on her phone.”

“Who was he?” I asked.

The investigator answered me:

“A former private security employee. Daniel paid him for more than two months.”

That same day we went to the old station warehouse. That man was waiting for us there. His name was Leon. He admitted that he had sold the substance to Daniel for Vanessa and had watched my movements.

“Why did you contact us?” the investigator asked.

Leon lowered his head.

“Because when I learned that it was no longer only intimidation, I became afraid. Daniel would get rid of everyone who knew anything.”

He handed the investigator a memory card.

On it was all of Daniel’s and Vanessa’s correspondence.

Everything.

The trial took place several weeks later.

I went there in a simple black dress and with the same small bronze brooch that I used to wear on my jacket when I was a prosecutor. An old image of scales was on the brooch. After the marriage I put it in a drawer because Daniel did not like my past.

“You are a wife, Claire,” he used to tell me. “You no longer need to prove anything to everyone.”

That day I fastened the scales to my chest again.

Daniel looked at me once in court.

There was no anger in his eyes anymore.

Only tiredness.

The judge listened to the recording. Then he read the laboratory conclusion. Vanessa admitted her guilt and testified against Daniel. Leon did the same.

Daniel was charged with attempted poisoning, falsification of evidence, financial fraud, and stalking.

Vanessa was charged as well.

The divorce proceedings continued separately. The money transferred by Daniel was returned to me, while the court left the house in my name because most of its purchase had been made possible by money I had accumulated over the years.

Daniel’s lawyer called me on the last day.

“Your former husband is offering you a settlement.”

“What does it include?”

“If you soften the statement, he will apologize publicly and pay you a certain amount.”

“No.”

“Mrs. Hayes, this will be easier for everyone.”

“It was already very difficult for me.”

I ended the call.

After the trial Daniel repeated his own words before me for the first time.

“I thought you would not dare to do anything.”

I looked at him for a long time.

“That was your most expensive mistake.”

A few days later his things were taken out of the house. The bedroom became empty. Only one photograph remained in the wardrobe, which had fallen behind the bed.

In the photograph we were newlyweds. I was laughing, while Daniel was looking not at the camera, but at himself, like a man to whom everything already belonged.

I did not take the photograph.

But I put the brooch back in the drawer.

This time not because I wanted to hide it.

But because I no longer needed to prove the past.

Three months later I moved to a small coastal town. I began working at a local legal center. Every morning I opened the window, let in the salty sea air, and reminded myself that a quiet house did not always mean a happy house.

My sister, Elene, often came to me. Once her seven-year-old son, Niko, was drawing at the kitchen table.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“You.”

In the drawing a woman stood under a large sun. She held a small glass in her hand, but there was nothing inside.

“Why is it empty?” I asked.

Niko shrugged.

“Because now you choose yourself what you will drink.”

!!!  Part 4 — I Found My Wife Who Had Unexpectedly Returned to Her Homeland in a Frozen Apartment, and at the Sight of My Mother the Lawyer Stopped Keeping Silent

That evening I cried for the first time without trying to hide it.

I received a letter from Daniel four months later. The lawyer sent it to me.

“Claire, I know that I have not earned forgiveness. But I want to speak with you only once. Everything could have been different.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I wrote an answer.

“It could have been. But it is no longer.”

The next day I tore up the letter.

Not because I hated him.

Because I no longer wanted his words to remain in my house.

The first winter in the coastal town turned out to be peaceful. On a December morning, when a thin layer of ice appeared on the windowsill, I opened my box of old belongings.

The small bronze brooch was still lying there.

Both sides of the scales looked equal.

I fastened it to my jacket and left the house.

That day I understood for the first time that freedom does not come with noise.

Sometimes it is only an empty glass.

And a door that no one locks for you anymore.

Missed the beginning?
