When Father Gave My Villa to My Sister to Settle In, the Color Left His Face After My Calm Reply

When I opened the door of my house near Lake Tahoe, a champagne bottle smashed against the marble wall and fragments scattered over my military uniform.

I had been at naval exercises for three weeks. I had barely slept and thought of nothing except warm water and silence, but music could be heard from the terrace. There my father, my sister Olivia, her husband David, and my stepmother Susan were drinking a toast.

Suitcases were arranged in the yard.

In the living room David was measuring the wall with a tape measure.

“A large television will fit here,” he was saying. “The children will have their own corner.”

Olivia was opening the kitchen cabinets as if she had lived in this house for years. Susan was opening the dish drawers for her and explaining where the everyday plates should be placed. Her finger touched the small copper compass hanging on my door, which James had given me on my last birthday, and the glass moved slightly.

I recognized that voice immediately.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

My father slowly came down the stairs. He held a crystal glass in his hand, and on his finger was the ring that had belonged to my mother.

“You have returned home, Elene,” he told me. “But you must understand that this house is too big for you.”

“Too big for me?”

“Olivia has children. She has a family. She needs this space.”

David folded the measuring tape and looked at me as if I had come as an unwelcome guest.

“Father said everything was agreed,” he added.

Something caught in my throat, but I did not show it on my face.

“This property is in my name.”

My father laughed.

“You live on a military base. You have food, a room, health insurance, everything there. But this house should be used for the family.”

“For the family or for Olivia?”

Olivia raised her glass.

“Do not complicate it, Elene. We are simply returning home.”

Just then I remembered all the transfers. Thirty-five thousand dollars for a car, because David considered public transportation an insult. Twenty-five thousand dollars for my father, when he told me that he was receiving threats because of gambling debts. Another fifty thousand three weeks after James’s funeral, when he convinced me that the bank would take the family home from us.

More than one hundred thousand.

For fifteen years I had worked on distant missions, investigations, and through nights in places where one mistake took your life. And they asked me only when I would be able to transfer the next amount.

My father touched James’s name once again.

“He wanted you to take care of the family.”

James lay in a military hospital, machines repeating his breathing. His last words had been spoken with love, but my father had turned them into a chain.

“Do not betray James’s memory,” he told me.

I looked at the compass.

It was then that I realized they did not want my help. They wanted to control my life.

I picked up my bag.

“Where are you going?” Olivia asked.

“Where no one gives away my own house.”

My father looked toward the door and calmly explained to David where the spare key was kept. I went outside, but before I got into the car, I received a message on my phone: an unknown action had been recorded in the ownership record of my house.

!!!  Acepté donarle un riñón a mi esposo, pero al oír un susurro de la enfermera, el médico dejó de sonreír

The next morning, at the San Diego military base, I arranged all the documents. The title deed, insurance, taxes, repair receipts. Each one had one name on it.

Mine.

Then I called Michael Vance, a former military lawyer who had gotten me out of a difficult investigation years ago.

“Bring me everything,” he told me. “And do not sign anything until I tell you.”

Then I contacted Ethan Wright, a former electronic security officer. In the evening he gave me access to my house’s cameras.

On Sunday, on the screen, the car I had bought stopped at the gate. My father got out. Behind him Susan, Olivia, and David came out. They took boxes, toys, and photographs from the trunk.

A warning was hanging on the door.

My father read it, smiled, and tore the paper off. David slid the key into the lock.

Ethan said quietly in the headphones:

“Elene, the system is activating now.”

On the screen David’s hand slowly turned, the lock tightened, and at that moment Michael put his hand on the folder lying on my desk…

Michael’s fingers touched the edge of the folder, but before he opened it, the phone rang.

“Elene, the camera is on,” he told me. “Now we must show them that no one but you owns this house.”

On the screen David was still trying to turn the key. The lock clicked sharply. Then a red light came on at the gate and all the doors of the house locked.

“What the hell?” David shouted.

“The key no longer works,” my father answered, but fear sounded in his voice for the first time.

Olivia struck the door with her fist.

“Elene! I know you are watching us!”

I stared at the screen. My fingers were clasped so tightly that my nails dug into my skin.

“I will not make contact,” I told Michael.

“Not yet. I want them to prove themselves that they knew what they were doing.”

Several minutes later private security representatives arrived. Michael went with them. Ethan, meanwhile, sat beside me in the San Diego apartment and saved the camera recordings.

“Does Father know that it is your house?” he asked me.

“He himself paid the first installment from my account.”

Ethan nodded.

“Then today we are not only protecting the house. Today we are proving that this was planned in advance.”

Michael appeared at the door. My father stood in front of him, his face flushed, holding the torn warning in his hand.

“This is a family dispute,” he told him. “Do not involve lawyers.”

“No, Mr. Hayes,” Michael replied. “This is an attempt to unlawfully enter private property.”

“I am her father!”

“That is not a legal right.”

Susan passed beside him and whispered quietly:

“Elene would not do this if she really loved her family.”

Michael looked at the camera, as if he knew I was watching from there.

“Put every item back in the car. Now.”

Olivia began to cry. At first it was the same crying with which she had changed my decisions for years, but when Michael told her that her calls and messages would be attached to the case, her voice stopped immediately.

She called me at that very moment.

“Elene, please do not humiliate us in front of the children.”

“I did not bring the children into this house without permission.”

!!!  Five Years After Divorcing My Husband, I Met Him with Three Children, but His Calm Face Suddenly Turned Pale

“Father said you agreed.”

“My father is not the owner here.”

Silence fell.

From far away I heard David’s voice:

“Mention the children again. Tell her that she will leave them in the street in winter.”

Olivia’s voice changed.

“Do you hear? Where will the children go?”

“They are using your children, Olivia. I will not do this anymore.”

“You promised James.”

This time I hung up.

Michael opened the folder. On the first page lay the title deed. On the second page were the tax receipts. On the third page was a document I had never seen before.

“What is this?” I asked.

Michael took off his glasses.

“This is a notarized power of attorney, supposedly giving your father permission to sell or transfer this house.”

The room suddenly became heavy.

“I did not sign this.”

“I know.”

“Then how did it appear?”

Ethan opened a new file on the computer.

“The document was uploaded three days ago into the local registry system. The upload was made from a hotel chain registered in your father’s company name.”

Michael put the paper on the desk.

“The signature is forged, but this is only the beginning.”

“What else did you find?”

He turned toward me and said quietly:

“David has already found a buyer. They had planned to sell your villa the following Monday.”

Cold passed through my chest.

“Sell my house?”

“And transfer all the debts remaining in your name to you.”

A new message appeared on the screen. It was an unknown number, and the text was only one sentence:

“If you want to know why Father did this, come alone to the old harbor tonight…”

“If you want to know why Father did this, come alone to the old harbor tonight…”

The message was still glowing on the screen. I was not going to go to the old harbor, but Michael read the message as if he already knew who was behind it.

“It is a trap,” he told me.

“Or a person who is afraid.”

“In any case, you will not go alone.”

At ten at night I stood near a small warehouse at the harbor. The water smelled of oil and wet wood. Ethan sat in the car, while Michael stood several steps away from me. James’s copper compass hung around my neck, and I touched the cold metal with my fingers.

A woman came out of the darkness.

It was Susan.

“Father does not know that I am here,” she said.

“Then why did you come?”

She handed me a small memory card.

“Because I can no longer lie to save Olivia either.”

Michael immediately shielded me.

“Tell me here what it is.”

Susan bit her lips.

“Several weeks ago David told me they needed a signature on Elene’s house. Father said that Elene was supposedly psychologically unwell after James’s death. Therefore we had to use the power of attorney.”

“Who signed it?” I asked.

Susan lowered her eyes.

“Father. But he did not only forge the signature. He told the bank that you were drowning in debt.”

Michael took the card with a glove.

“Is this a recording?”

“David recorded it himself. He wanted to split the money with your father. Then he changed his mind and gave me a copy.”

Ethan opened the laptop. The recording began.

My father’s voice sounded, first hoarse, then laughing.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hija llegó a urgencias después de tres días vomitando, pero al escuchar a su padre la doctora palideció

“Elene will not be able to resist us. She feels guilty after James’s death. It is enough to tell her that she is betraying the family.”

Then David’s voice sounded:

“And if she does not agree?”

“Then we will show the power of attorney. The notary has already been paid. We will sell the house, leave the debts in her name, and give Olivia’s family a new place.”

My breath caught.

In the recording Father said one more thing.

“James’s last words are the strongest weapon. A woman who wants to fulfill her husband’s wish cannot protect her own house.”

Susan began to cry.

“I did not think they would go this far.”

“But you knew,” I told her.

She nodded.

“I knew.”

Michael turned off the recording.

“Now the main secret is confirmed. A false power of attorney, a forged signature, a sale prepared in advance, and a recording of the conspiracy.”

I could still hear my father’s voice. James’s name, my guilt, my house—everything had been turned into an account for them.

“Let us go to the police,” I said.

“We will go,” Michael replied. “But first you must know this.”

He took out another sheet of paper.

“The notary gave us a statement this morning. The power of attorney was not only forged. A false record of your biometric verification was also attached to it.”

“So someone used my personal data?”

“Yes. And the data was taken from an old military insurance application.”

I could not find the words.

This was no longer called occupation of the house. It was the deliberate breaking into my military and personal life.

Michael’s phone rang. He listened, his face changed, and he looked toward me.

“What happened?”

“The court issued a temporary order. Father, Olivia, and David are prohibited from approaching you or your property.”

“That is good.”

“Not yet. One hour ago they filed a statement claiming that you threaten your father and cannot manage the property because of your psychological condition.”

I froze.

“What are they planning?”

Michael looked at the dark water beyond the window.

“Tomorrow morning in court they will try to use your life against you. And Father still had not heard the most serious recording…”
