Part 4 — My Children Humiliated Me in My Own Kitchen Over Three Million Dollars, but One Strange Detail Suddenly Wiped the Smiles Off Both Their Faces

At Nora’s last words, such silence fell over the house that it was as though every clock had stopped working at the same time.

Then the telephones began to ring.

First the bank called.

Then the land buyer’s lawyer.

And the third call was from the sheriff’s office.

Marcus walked around the room and told everyone that this was a misunderstanding.

“My mother is confused,” he repeated. “The recordings have been taken out of context.”

Yulia answered calmly:

“Mr. Marcus, from this moment you must no longer speak.”

“I have my own lawyer.”

“Then call him.”

Marcus called him.

The lawyer did not speak for more than twenty seconds. Then Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“What did he say?” Rachel asked.

For the first time Marcus could not answer.

Yulia told me:

“His lawyer refused representation. He said that the conflict of interests and the abundance of evidence make the case impossible.”

Rachel leaned against the wall.

Marcus began defending himself again.

“I only wanted to protect the family.”

Daniel placed the tablet on the table.

“Then listen to how you protected it.”

He turned on the recording.

Marcus’s own voice, recorded several months earlier, sounded in the room.

“If Mother does not sign, let us find a doctor. Rachel will cry, and I will say that I want to protect her. In the end everyone will believe us.”

Rachel’s laughter could also be heard in the recording.

“She has been afraid of my anger all her life.”

Marcus struck the tablet.

“Turn it off!”

But the voice was already standing in the room.

Hearing his own words was harder for him than any accusation. He looked at the counter, where the forged power of attorney had lain a few minutes earlier, and seemed to understand for the first time that these words had come from his own mouth.

!!!  Yo iba a anunciar el siguiente número cuando un enorme motociclista barbudo subió al escenario con la diadema rosa de su hija, pero el hombre del sobre gris conocía un secreto capaz de destruir a toda su familia

“I did not say it like that,” he whispered.

“You did,” I answered.

“Mother…”

“Do not call me that when you want me to protect you again.”

The sheriff’s officers arrived soon. They put handcuffs on Marcus, while Rachel sat down on the floor and began to cry.

I did not follow either of them into the yard.

I stood by the window and watched my children leave in different cars. They had come together. They left separately.

The following weeks passed noisily.

The court canceled the forged power of attorney. The bank returned my money. The sale of the land was temporarily suspended until the environmental protection service examined the soil.

It turned out that old waste really had been buried in the northern corner of the farm. Marcus had hidden it during the initial negotiations with the construction company. The buyer canceled the deal, but responsibility was not transferred to me, because all the documents showed that I had not known about it.

Marcus confessed to the crime.

Rachel said before the court that she had become frightened of her brother and that he had dragged her in too.

I did not ask them for severe punishment.

Nor did I ask for leniency.

I simply told the complete truth.

When I returned to the kitchen, I noticed for the first time that my blue ceramic bowl was broken. That morning the apples had scattered right beside it. I gathered the pieces, but I could no longer glue the bowl back together.

This small loss hurt me more than I had expected.

Thomas had given it to me for our forty-second anniversary. I had always arranged apples inside it.

Several months later the farm was no longer our home.

After the legal inspections and the cleaning of the land, part of it was purchased by a local educational foundation. They opened an agricultural training center there. I began working with them as a consultant.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich verschwand in der Nacht vor meiner Hochzeit, doch als mein Chef meinen wahren Namen hörte, erstarrte sein Gesicht

Every morning I went to the small office, opened the window, and breathed in the smell of freshly worked earth.

On my desk lay one round fragment remaining from the broken bowl.

A blue leaf was painted on it.

One morning the little granddaughter of Thomas’s old friend came to me. She was holding a colorful sheet of paper.

“I drew this for you,” she told me.

On the sheet were a house, trees, and three small figures. One of the figures was holding a blue bowl.

“Why do I have the bowl?” I asked.

Sopo shrugged.

“Because you no longer let anyone break your house.”

Her words struck me like Marcus’s fist that morning, but this was no longer pain. It was something returning.

Several weeks later the first snow came.

The village road was covered in white. The children of the training center hung small lanterns in the yard. And I arrived early in the morning and put water on by the window.

I found a letter from Marcus.

“Mother, I know that I destroyed everything. When I get out, I want to talk to you. At least just once.”

I held the letter in my hands for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“When you listen to yourself and no longer want someone else to pay for your consequences, then perhaps we will be able to talk. Until then, I will no longer direct your life.”

Rachel sent me a voice message. She was crying and told me that she regretted it.

I believed that she regretted it.

But forgiveness and return were not the same thing.

I deleted the message and placed the phone on the windowsill.

In the evening, when I left the center, the snow was falling more heavily. Children were running along the roadside. One of them drew a small heart in the snow.

I put my hand into my pocket and touched the fragment with the blue leaf.

!!!  Ich kam unangekündigt an Silvester nach Hause, fand meine Frau hilflos in der Küche – und meine Mutter erstarrte am Telefon

That morning I thought my children had taken my home away from me.

Now I understood that a home had never been walls.

A home was a place where I was no longer afraid.

I placed the blue fragment on the snow, then picked it up again and pressed it to my heart.

The bowl was broken.

I was not anymore.

Missed the beginning?
