My Children Humiliated Me in My Own Kitchen Over Three Million Dollars, but One Strange Detail Suddenly Wiped the Smiles Off Both Their Faces

That morning my daughter burst through the door shouting, and a few seconds later my son broke my rib on the floor of my own kitchen.

The hot August sun came through the window and lit the apples on the wooden floor. One apple stopped in a thin strip of blood running from my lip. And all I could hear was how the cicadas chirped beneath the maples.

Rachel stood in a beige suit. Her shoes were so polished that I saw my distorted face in them.

“Three million dollars, Mother!” she shouted. “You sold the farm and now you want to keep everything for yourself?”

I pressed my hand to my ribs and tried to breathe. With every inhalation it felt as though a sharp knife were cutting between the bones.

“It was my farm,” I said. “Your father and I built it. Both of you turned your backs on it.”

Marcus stood behind her. Forty-two years old, broad-shouldered, in a dark suit, despite the heat outside. A gold watch shone on his wrist. It was the watch I had paid for when he convinced me that he needed it for work.

“It is our inheritance,” he said.

In one second I no longer saw the man who, as a child, had slept on my chest during pneumonia. I saw only a strange, cold look.

“You have already received more than you were entitled to,” I told them.

Rachel struck the counter so hard that the cups jumped.

“You gave me twenty-five thousand dollars to save my boutique.”

“Your son’s study debt was twenty-eight thousand,” I reminded her. “I also paid the salaries of Marcus’s company’s employees twice.”

“Mother did all that,” she sneered. “Because it is our right to have her help.”

Then I understood what I had done wrong. I had given love as help, and they had thought it was a right.

Marcus grabbed my hand and forced me to stand. The smell of expensive perfume mixed with the steam of coffee. Strangely, I remembered how he had run across the freshly mowed field as a child.

“Tell me which bank the money is in,” he said to me.

“No.”

His fist came quickly. Pain exploded as white fire. I fell to my knees.

Rachel was not frightened. On the contrary, she smiled slightly.

“Now you will tell us anyway.”

In the corner of the kitchen, above the pantry, stood a small camera. They did not notice it. Eight years ago, when burglars who broke into the house took old jewelry, Thomas and I installed cameras. Two weeks before selling the farm, I completely replaced the system: new microphones, motion recorders, and a hidden alarm.

Marcus took a folded sheet of paper from his jacket and spread it on the counter.

I immediately recognized the title of the document—a permanent power of attorney.

My signature stood at the bottom. But it was not mine. The letters were too heavy, and the lines too straight.

“This is forged,” I said.

“You are seventy-one years old,” Marcus answered calmly. “Everyone will believe that you no longer remember what you signed.”

Rachel bent down.

“In twenty minutes this power of attorney will be at the bank. After that you will not be able to transfer even one cent.”

“I will call the police.”

“And what will you tell them?” she asked. “That your children beat you? We will say that you fell. And you will be a tired widow who does not even remember her own signature.”

!!!  Part 4 — After my warning at the billionaire’s negotiation, the lawyer ordered the guards to remove me, but his smile suddenly disappeared

Marcus looked at his watch.

“Account name. Number. Password. You have twenty minutes.”

Behind him, above the pantry, the camera’s green light blinked calmly.

Thomas had installed these cameras a few months before his death and told me: “Elene, at least once we must have a way to prove the truth without words.”

I carefully slid my hand beneath the counter and reached a small button with my fingers. I pressed it.

A slight vibration passed through my palm.

The live recording, the forged document, and an emergency message were sent simultaneously to three places. They believed one of them was dead.

Marcus bent down again.

“This is your last chance, Mother.”

I looked into his eyes and told him:

“No. Now you have something to pay…”

“Now you have something to pay,” I repeated.

First surprise, then anger covered Marcus’s face.

“What nonsense are you talking?”

Rachel quickly looked toward the camera, but it was already too late. Her face appeared for several seconds on the illuminated monitor I had hidden in the hallway cupboard.

“Mother, you do not understand what you are doing,” she said.

“I understand very well. For the first time in my life.”

The telephone rang on the counter. The name of my lawyer, Yulia Harris, appeared on the screen. Marcus reached toward the phone, but I pushed it forward with my foot.

“Answer it,” Rachel whispered.

“You answer it.”

“Elene, do not make us…”

“You already made me.”

Marcus picked up the phone.

“Ms. Harris, my mother fell and is confused,” he said.

A calm voice sounded from the phone:

“Mr. Marcus, take your hand away from Ms. Elene and the document.”

Marcus froze.

“What does this mean?”

“It means that the conversation is being recorded and your actions have already been documented.”

Rachel went pale.

“This is illegal!”

“Using security cameras in your own home is not illegal,” Yulia answered. “Especially when violence is taking place there.”

Marcus threw the phone onto the counter.

“You had planned everything.”

“No,” I said. “I simply stopped allowing you to plan everything for the first time.”

The sound of car brakes came from outside. Rachel looked toward the window and stepped back. Two cars were entering the yard from the road, but this was not the police yet. They were my lawyer and private investigator Daniel Hayes. In their opinion Daniel had been considered dead six months earlier, because he had only left the city and lived under another surname.

After Thomas’s death, it was Daniel who discovered that Marcus was quietly trying to gain access to my accounts. I did not believe him then. I thought, A son cannot deceive his own mother.

He could.

And he was trying.

Daniel entered the house, holding a small leather bag. Rachel headed toward the door.

“This is a family matter.”

“It became a criminal matter when you struck your mother,” he told her.

Marcus tried to block the way.

“You are not in your own house.”

“This is Ms. Elene’s house,” Daniel replied. “And you are no longer even considered guests here.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened. His gold watch was still shining, but now it no longer looked like a sign of power. It looked more like a shackle.

!!!  Mi hermano me presentó como el fracaso familiar en su boda, pero al verme, el padre de la novia dejó de sonreír

Daniel took a tablet from the bag and sent it to Yulia.

“Before I came, the bank called me. A copy of the power of attorney was submitted last night. It was accompanied by a doctor’s certificate claiming that Elene’s mental condition had worsened.”

“Who was the doctor?” I asked.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“A doctor whose clinic Rachel owed a large debt to last month.”

Rachel covered her face with her hands.

“It was only a consultation.”

“A consultation during which the doctor did not even see Ms. Elene,” Yulia said from the phone. “And still wrote a report.”

In the silence, only the refrigerator motor was working.

I went to the counter. Every step hurt, but I no longer wanted them to play the role of a woman sitting on the floor.

“Why?” I asked my children. “Did you need money, or did you simply want to make me kneel at last?”

Rachel wiped away her tears.

“I am in debt. If I do not receive the money, everything will end.”

“Your everything always began and ended at my expense.”

Marcus suddenly slid his hand beneath the document.

“These are still my rights.”

Daniel seized him by the wrist.

“Touch this paper once more and we will add forcible taking to it as well.”

Marcus pulled his hand free. For the first time I saw that he was afraid.

But at that same moment my phone rang. The number was unknown. Yulia told me not to answer, although the ringing did not stop.

At last I picked it up.

A hoarse woman’s voice sounded from the other side.

“Ms. Elene, if you are hearing this call, know that your children do not need only three million. They know what your husband had hidden until his death…”

“Who are you?” I asked.

Daniel stopped in the hallway. Yulia’s voice fell silent in the phone. Marcus and Rachel looked at each other, and in that look I saw not anger for the first time, but real fear.

“My name is Nora Bell,” the woman said. “Six years ago I treated your husband.”

Thomas’s name fell into the room like a heavy stone.

“My husband died six months ago.”

“I know. But two days before his death he asked to meet with me. He told me that if you or the children ever found yourselves in trouble concerning the sale of the farm, I should give you one document.”

Daniel placed the leather bag on the counter.

“This was in the bag,” he said.

Nora continued quietly:

“Thomas told me that Marcus and Rachel had made a secret plan years ago to sell the farm’s lands. They thought that if you felt weak after your husband’s death, they would acquire the land cheaply and then sell it expensively to a construction company.”

“That is a lie!” Marcus shouted.

Daniel took a sealed brown folder from the bag. On its edge, in Thomas’s handwriting, was one word: “For Elene.”

My fingers were trembling so much that I could not open the clasp the first time.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Mother, do not listen to them. Father was ill.”

“That is exactly why I recorded his conversation,” Nora said.

Daniel turned on the tablet.

Thomas’s voice sounded in the room, hoarse, tired, but clear.

“Marcus said that Mother only needs to sign. And Rachel told me that if I resisted, she would tell everyone that I was destroying the family.”

!!!  Part 4 — They Arrested Me in My Mother’s Kitchen Because They Didn’t Believe the Military Call — But My Stepfather’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

Rachel stopped breathing.

In the recording Thomas was silent for several seconds, then continued:

“Do not tell Elene anything until I am certain. But if something happens to me, know this: the farm must not remain with them. Elene should receive the money only when the land is sold at a fair price. This is her work.”

Marcus stepped back.

“This has been edited.”

“It has been laboratory-confirmed that the recording is continuous,” Daniel said. “Your voice has also been confirmed in another file, where you discuss the price with the land buyer.”

Yulia added from the phone:

“And here is the bank’s examination: the signature on the power of attorney is forged. The signature samples were taken from Elene’s old medical documents.”

Rachel sat down on a chair. Her beige suit was no longer elegant; it had stains and dust on the knees.

“Mother, I did not want you to get hurt.”

“But you knew Marcus would strike me.”

She looked at her brother.

Marcus looked away.

“It was only intimidation.”

That one sentence was enough.

Daniel called the police. The sound of a siren was heard in the distance.

I looked at the folder and understood for the first time that before his death Thomas had left me not only money. He had also left me suspicion—of my own children—which hurt me immediately, but helped me survive.

Marcus suddenly took a phone from his pocket.

“If you take this to court, you will suffer too,” he said.

“How?” I asked.

He bent toward me.

“Because this farm is not only our problem. The buyer has already paid the first amount and now knows that there is old chemical waste beneath the land. If the deal is canceled, they will sue you too.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Nora whispered into the phone:

“Elene, Thomas recorded this too. Marcus hid the waste when they arranged the land inspection. But he still does not know that the environmental protection service already received a second folder this morning…”
