A Pregnant Dog Was Found Dying at My Door, but When Her Owner Returned, the Smile Suddenly Disappeared

That night, a man knocked on my door and told me that if I did not open it, he would kill me first and then the animal. A few minutes earlier, Nala had been lying on my wooden floor, her body and belly frozen, with puppies barely moving inside.

I had imagined returning to the mountains as a rest. Being in military service, I had only four days of leave and wanted to turn off my phone, light the firewood, and sleep in silence. But at the stairs I found a German shepherd buried in the snow. Her eyes were open, although life seemed to be slowly leaving her.

I took off my jacket, carefully wrapped her in it, and lifted her into my arms. Her body was so cold that my fingers hurt. She did not bite me. She only whimpered quietly when I carried her into the room.

I put dry firewood into the fireplace and spread blankets on the floor. I drew the curtains over the windows, heated water, and wrapped her paws in warm towels. She had frozen blood between her pads. And on her neck I noticed a deep mark.

There were fibers of orange rope caught in her fur.

“You didn’t come here alone, did you?” I whispered.

Nala opened her eyes slightly. When I placed my hand on her belly, I felt a small movement from inside. Then a second one.

“You are still here,” I told them. “So you will stay too.”

At that moment, a small metal medallion fell from her neck. Its corner was bent, and the name Nala was written on it. A telephone number could be seen below. I called twice, but the wind kept breaking the connection. Then I wrote and sent a message: “Nala is alive, but urgently needs help. Tell me who you are.”

No answer came. Instead, Nala’s belly became hard. Her hind legs tensed, and a wet spot covered the blanket. Labor was beginning.

I emptied a wooden tool box, put clean sheets inside, and carefully laid Nala down. On her side, in the fur, I saw the mark of a recently made wound. The stitches had been put in roughly.

Someone knew she was pregnant. Even so, they tied her with a rope and left her in the storm.

Deep tire tracks were visible outside. Someone had stayed here for a long time.

Then the phone flashed. A voice message had arrived. I turned it on.

A woman’s sobbing voice was drowned out by the rumble of a car engine.

“If you found Nala, please do not give her to Esteban. He is not her owner. He took her. Please, listen to me until the end…”

At that same moment, Nala rose and looked toward the door. The sound of a new engine was heard outside. Headlights appeared through the window.

They knocked three times.

“I know you’re inside!” the man shouted. “I’m Esteban. I’ve come for my dog.”

Nala pressed herself against the wall. I stood between the door and the box and played the woman’s message to the end. The man’s voice outside came closer.

!!!  Part 4 — My husband moved his mother and sister into my house, but when I calmly replied, his face suddenly went pale.

“If you found Nala, please do not give her to Esteban. He is not her owner. He stole her. If you don’t open the door, I’ll kill both of you…”

The woman’s voice stopped at the last word, but her fear remained in the room. Behind the door, Esteban continued striking it with his fist.

“Daniel, I even know your name! Don’t make me break down the door!”

I pulled the curtain aside slightly. In the back of the car lay a coil of orange rope. The same color, the same thick fibers that I had found on Nala’s neck. And the tire tracks matched exactly the tracks left near the veranda.

“She needs help,” I answered. “She is not going with you.”

“Then you won’t get out of here either.”

Esteban parked the car across the road. Then he opened the back door and took out a heavy chain. I knew what such a movement meant. He did not want to take the dog away; he wanted to force the door open.

I raised the phone to catch a signal. One bar appeared and immediately disappeared. I had the emergency-services number dialed, but the call would not go through.

Nala whimpered softly. The dark stain beneath her grew.

“Hold on, girl,” I told her, kneeling beside her. “I’m here.”

The next contraction made her whole body tremble. A small, wet head appeared beneath her tail. The first puppy was being born.

Exactly then, the lights went out. The heater’s hum also stopped.

“He cut the power,” I whispered.

Outside, Esteban’s boots sounded on the gravel. Nala’s breathing quickened from pain. I found candles, held a flashlight between my teeth, and washed my hands. I had seen cold earth and blood many times on military missions, but now the movement of one small life frightened me more than any battlefield.

“Nala, look at me,” I told her. “Don’t give up.”

“This is your last warning!” Esteban roared. “This dog is mine!”

“Then why did you leave her in the snow?”

Silence fell for several seconds.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know she has a rope mark on her neck.”

His footsteps stopped. Then he wrapped the chain around the door.

Nala was barely breathing. I carefully helped the puppy be born. The small body fell into my hands, motionless and cold. I cleaned it with a towel, rubbed its chest, and suddenly heard a faint squeak.

“It’s alive,” I breathed out.

Nala raised her head. For the first time, I saw strength rather than fear in her eyes.

Esteban shook the door.

“You’re opening it now, Daniel.”

A new message appeared on the phone. From an unknown number there was only one sentence: “If she is there, turn on a red light at the window. We are waiting below the road.”

I looked toward the window. Outside, there was only a white storm. This could be help. Or Esteban’s accomplice.

!!!  Mi ex me acorraló durante el turno y susurró una amenaza, pero el hombre de la mesa del rincón dejó de sonreír

“Who are you?” I asked loudly.

No answer came.

Then Nala suddenly tried to bark. Her voice was hoarse, but Esteban immediately fell silent behind the door.

He said Nala’s name as if he were addressing not a dog, but a living human witness.

“Nala, you know what will happen if you tell him everything.”

A chill ran through my back. This man was not trying to speak with a dog. He was threatening someone’s secret.

The second puppy was born. Then the third. Nala was growing weaker and weaker, but she cleaned each one with her tongue.

And then a piece of paper slid under the door.

I bent down. Only one word was written on it: “Mariam.”

I remembered the woman’s voice recorded on the phone. There should have been other words at the end of the message, but the recording had stopped exactly then.

The man said quietly from outside:

“If you want to know where Nala came from, look at what is hidden under the box. But remember, Daniel, the truth does not always mean survival…”

After Esteban’s words, I slid my hand under the box. There I found a small hard object—a flat compartment fastened to the wooden floor with a nail. I opened it and found a memory card, two photographs, and a folded document inside.

“Daniel, open the door right now!” Esteban shouted.

I held the flashlight between my teeth and looked at the photographs. In the first, Nala stood beside a young girl. On the back it said: “Mariam and Nala, the day of returning from the shelter.” In the second photograph, the girl stood in front of a clinic. Beside her was the same scar that I had found on Nala’s side.

The document said that Nala was registered in the name of Mariam Kavtaradze. Esteban’s name appeared nowhere.

I put the card into the laptop. The first recording was from a camera. Mariam stood in a clinic corridor and was speaking on the phone.

“Nala is my dog,” she was saying. “Esteban took her by force. He wants to sell the puppies. If I call the police, he says he will kill Nala.”

Then the yard appeared on the screen. Esteban was tying Nala with orange rope. Mariam rushed into the frame.

“Let her go!”

“The puppies are mine,” he answered. “You will never see this dog again.”

The recording ended, but the second file was even worse. It showed the veranda of my cabin that same evening. Esteban was leaving Nala in the snow. He looked toward the door once, as if he was sure I would return soon.

“He did not expect you to be here,” Mariam’s voice said in the recording. “Why did you film this?”

“Because if anything happens to me, everyone should know who did it.”

The first powerful blow struck the door. Nala jumped, but covered the puppies with her body.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Soacra mea îmi aducea ceaiul în fiecare dimineață, dar după ce fiica mea a șoptit ceva, soțul meu a încetat să zâmbească

“Daniel, you can’t use that card,” Esteban said. “My people are in the car.”

This was the first time he admitted it. Someone else was waiting behind him.

The signal returned to the phone. I immediately sent my location, copies of the recordings, and the voice message. Then I turned on the red flashlight by the window.

Below, among the trees, another light came on. Two short flashes. It was a reply.

“Mariam is here,” I said.

Esteban seemed to step back.

“No. She is supposed to be at the clinic.”

“Why? Because you told her so?”

Heavy breathing was heard behind the door.

“Mariam can’t help you anymore.”

There was no threat in these words anymore. There was fear.

A few minutes later, the sound of engines came from far away. Esteban removed the chain and tried to escape, but the road was blocked by his own car. Through the window I saw two people approach him from the snow. One was a woman with a red scarf around her shoulders.

“Nala!” she shouted.

The dog made a weak sound.

Mariam opened the door when the rescue team had already arrived. Her face was tired and scratched, but when she saw Nala, she fell to her knees.

“Forgive me,” she sobbed. “I thought I would never find you.”

They put handcuffs on Esteban. The recordings, photographs, and medallion were enough to keep his lie from being hidden.

But before they transferred Nala to the stretcher, Mariam’s phone rang.

She listened, her face changed, and she turned toward me.

“Daniel… Esteban was not working alone. Someone at the clinic said that all of Nala’s puppies survived. Now they are coming to take them…”
