Part 4 — When a Pregnant Woman at a Gala Barely Touched the Glass to Her Lips, the Strongest Man Suddenly Turned Pale

The sentence was still flickering on the screen when the clinic door finally collapsed.

But the police were standing there.

The real police.

Detective Brooke Haley entered first, followed by six armed officers. She ordered Roman to put down his weapon, then looked at Preston and nodded.

“Federal investigators have already copied the memory device,” she said. “No one is getting away.”

Roman slowly placed the weapon on the floor.

I sat on the doctor’s bed, protecting my belly with both hands.

“Where is Gideon?” Roman asked.

The detective took out her phone.

“At your house.”

Roman immediately called the lawyer. The conversation lasted twenty seconds.

“Do not come,” the lawyer told him. “You are also a witness in the investigation. If you meet him now, you may ruin everything.”

“He is destroying my family.”

“No, Roman. He is already doing that. Now, for the first time, what you do matters.”

The lawyer hung up.

Roman held the phone in his hand for a long time.

For the first time I saw on his face not power, but a lost boy.

Then the detective placed a small recorder on my table.

“We found this in the warehouse. Preston said it might be useful to you.”

We turned on the recorder.

Gideon’s voice sounded in the room.

“Roman believed Madeline only because the woman is playing on his weakness.”

Then my voice sounded. It was a recording from the evening when I met Gideon at the foundation office.

“There is an eighteen-million-dollar discrepancy in the foundation plans,” I was saying. “You cannot hide the transfer of this amount.”

Gideon laughed then.

“You are an architect, Madeline. Not an investigator.”

“If the money is legal, why did the documents disappear?”

“Because sometimes intelligent people need to return to their place.”

The sound of a chair leg came from the recording.

“Stay away from Roman,” Gideon said. “You must not give birth to the child at all.”

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Fostul meu soț m-a numit inutilă pe coridorul spitalului, dar când liftul s-a deschis, zâmbetul lui a dispărut

Silence fell in the room.

I was hearing my own words from outside and understood for the first time how calmly I had spoken while trembling inside.

Roman buried his head in his hands.

“I should have been there,” he said.

“You believed me then,” I answered. “That means at least a little.”

We went up to the second floor of the clinic. There was a small room where Roman and I had previously drawn plans for the baby’s future room. Only a whiteboard, two chairs, and a photograph attached to the wall remained in the room.

In the photograph the two of us stood by the river. Roman held a construction helmet in his hand, and I had my father’s little compass fastened to my dress.

Now the room was empty.

Only the fallen pin of the compass was found on the table. The brooch had come off my dress at the gala and a security employee had kept it.

Roman picked it up in his hand.

“You always said that it showed you the way.”

“Then give it back to me.”

He handed me the brooch.

That same evening Gideon was arrested from the foundation’s own office. He did not try to escape. He said only one thing:

“Roman, I did all this to protect you.”

Roman looked at him.

“Listen to your own words.”

The detective turned on the recorder.

Gideon’s voice sounded again:

“If the woman survives, let her remember nothing. If she does not survive, no one will care about the death of one pregnant architect.”

Gideon fell silent.

His mouth opened, but he could not find an answer.

For the first time he heard his own cruelty the way others heard it.

Brooke Rusk was also arrested for financial fraud and threats, although she made a deal and handed all the accounts over to the investigators. Evelyn gave testimony. For several weeks she tried to apologize to me.

!!!  My Twin Brother Looked at His Newborn Daughter for the First Time, Refused Her, and His Wife Smiled Immediately

For the first time I did not tell her that everything was fine.

“You did not want to kill me,” I told her in the courthouse corridor. “But you still put me on the road where that could have happened.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

“I know.”

It was the only answer I could bear to hear.

Four months later large halls were no longer needed in court. The records taken from the foundation, the bank transfers, and the testimony of the laboratory technician proved everything.

Gideon was sentenced to a long prison term.

Preston confessed to the crime and his sentence was reduced in exchange for cooperation with the investigators. He wrote Brooke a letter, but Brooke did not send an answer.

Roman resigned from managing the Caldwell company.

His first decision was not to close the foundation, but to transform it. All the money that was returned was used for safe housing for women and children.

I was no longer watching this from a distance.

Six months later I began working in a small architectural studio in Brooklyn. In the morning I opened the window, drank coffee, and had the child’s first drawing hanging on the wall.

I named my daughter Nora.

She was born healthy and cried so loudly that the midwife said with a laugh, “The whole hospital already has an opinion of its own.”

Roman remained in her life, but he opened the door of my house only when I invited him. Now his love no longer resembled protection that does not let you breathe.

On Sundays I walked Nora along the riverbank. She clung to my finger with her little hands and asked about everything.

“Mom, where does this road lead?”

“Wherever you decide.”

The first snow came at the end of November.

I was standing by the studio window when I received a message from Roman.

“I want to talk to you. We could still be a family.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hijo pasó junto a mí mientras agonizaba en las escaleras del juzgado, y la secretaria dejó de respirar

I looked at the screen for a long time.

The old me would have immediately run to calm him. She would have explained that it was not his fault. She would have saved him from his own family, as always.

But now I had my own life.

I wrote:

“We can be a family only if we respect each other’s freedom. I am not going back. I am moving forward.”

Roman did not answer me immediately.

The next day he sent me only one word.

“I understand.”

This time I truly believed him.

In the evening I put Nora’s coat on her. I placed my father’s copper compass in the little pocket of her dress, because I no longer needed to fasten the brooch. Nora found it and took it in her hand.

“What is this?”

“Direction.”

She brought the compass to her ear. The little needle lightly knocked inside.

Exactly as on that night when all the doors were closing against me.

But now I did not need any door.

I took Nora’s hand and we went out into the snow.

The compass quietly showed the way.

I was not turning back anymore.

Missed the beginning?
