Part 4 — I was fighting death in the maternity ward when my husband signed the divorce papers and looked at his watch at the doctor’s warning

Irakli’s words fell into the room, and Grant did not move at all for several seconds.

“Who is this?” he asked.

“A person whose existence in your family fund stands above all the rules,” Irakli answered.

Grant picked up the phone again.

“Call Richard. Right now.”

The call did not go through.

Then he called the financial director.

“Why is the account blocked?”

The woman’s voice from the other side was so clear that everyone in the room heard it.

“Mr. Holloway, the bank has imposed a temporary restriction. Every transfer requires the supervisor’s approval.”

“I am the head of the company.”

“From this moment, your authority is under review.”

“No one can touch my money!”

“It is no longer only your money.”

The call ended.

Grant threw the phone onto the bed. The screen struck the wooden floor, and the protective glass cracked like a spider’s web.

“Elene, did you plan all this?”

I was still weak. I had difficulty even standing, but his eyes no longer frightened me for the first time.

“I was lying in the operating room when you were writing your signature.”

“Then who is helping you?”

“People who, unlike you, do not check accounts before death.”

Irakli played the recording again.

Grant’s own voice sounded in the room.

“If she dies, it will be easier.”

Grant shook his head to the side.

“This is taken out of context.”

“No,” Irakli said. “We have the complete recording.”

“I did not say that.”

His face gave everything away then. He heard his own voice from the outside for the first time and realized that he could no longer blame the words on the lawyer, the doctor, or his treacherous wife.

The next morning journalists stood in front of the company’s main office. Grant tried to get out of the car, but the head of security blocked his way.

“Sorry, Mr. Holloway. I have a new order.”

“I built this building.”

“Today you do not have permission to enter here.”

His lawyer, the same man who had brought the divorce papers, was already holding a different bag.

“Advise me how to regain control,” Grant told him.

!!!  Mi madre exigió dinero mientras mi hijo luchaba por vivir, pero al mencionar una cuenta secreta su sonrisa desapareció

The lawyer looked him in the eyes.

“First I must tell you that I am no longer taking your case.”

“What are you saying?”

“You concealed financial documents and the statements made at the hospital from me. I cannot risk my own license.”

“I will pay you double.”

“This time money is the problem, not the solution.”

Grant returned to the car. The driver saw in the mirror how his shoulders drooped.

That same day the supervisor handed Leila and Irakli an official letter. The company audit showed that Grant had secretly taken money from the family fund for years and sent the accounts to companies connected with his new partner. This was no longer only a divorce. It was a case of fraud, abuse of power, and evasion of a medical decision.

But I did not want to humiliate Grant in the courtroom.

I simply wanted him to no longer have the right over me and the children.

Several weeks later the hearing took place. I was still walking slowly, and the surgical stitch on my abdomen pulled. I held three small socks in my hand. I had placed the yellow sock in the middle, because I remembered Grant’s face left in the corridor.

The judge listened to the recording.

Grant sat silently.

No one was standing beside him anymore.

“Mr. Holloway,” the judge said, “your own signature and your own words determined the result. The primary right of guardianship remains with the mother. Financial responsibility passes to your company and personal property. Mrs. Holloway and an independent supervisor will manage the fund.”

Grant looked toward me.

“Elene, I love the children.”

I could no longer see the old husband in his eyes. I saw only a person who had looked at the consequences of his own choice for the first time.

“You should have said love when I was fighting death,” I answered. “Now only responsibility remains for you.”

He was granted visitation rights under strict rules. He did not use the first several visits. Perhaps he could not bear that he needed permission first to reach the children.

But for me, everyday life slowly returned.

Three weeks later I moved home from the hospital. The house, which was in Grant’s name, was transferred to the children under the fund’s protection conditions. The rooms looked empty because his things had been taken away. Only one photograph remained on the wall—the one taken on our wedding day, where I was laughing while Grant was looking behind the camera.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Soțul meu și-a etalat gemenii cu cea mai bună prietenă, dar întrebarea mamei lui i-a șters zâmbetul

I did not take the photograph down.

I simply saw for the first time that in that picture only I was laughing.

In the mornings I fed Luka while Marisa wrapped her fingers in my hair. And Sandro always woke whenever silence fell over the house.

“Mother, why is he crying?” Leila asked me one morning.

“Because Sandro has a mind of his own.”

“And you?”

I laughed.

“I have one now too.”

Two months later I began working as the fund’s supervisor. Not because I needed money—but because for the first time I wanted to create something that no one could take away from me again. I transformed part of the fund into a medical assistance program for women. For women who were left alone in hospitals because someone considered their life an expense.

On the first day I entered the small office. The white peaks of the mountains could be seen from the window. I arranged three wooden pencils on the desk—one for each child.

Marisa took one of them and drew three round faces on the paper. The fourth, the largest, was for me.

“Is this me?” I asked.

“No,” she told me seriously. “This is you when you are no longer afraid.”

That evening I received a message from Grant.

“Give me permission for one meeting. I will explain everything. I know that I hurt you very much.”

The second message came several minutes later.

“You can trust me again.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. Then I wrote a reply.

“There are court rules for meeting the children. But there is no longer a door for returning to me.”

My hand did not tremble when I sent it.

Weeks became months. Grant could not regain the company. He paid the debts, accepted responsibility, and began coming to the children on the appointed days. Luka avoided speaking with him, Marisa asked him many questions, and Sandro looked at his shoes every time, as if he were waiting for an answer from there.

!!!  Mi suegra humilló a mis hijas durante la cena y mi esposo me ordenó callar, pero entonces su sonrisa desapareció

I no longer tried to justify their father for them.

Nor did I teach them to hate him.

I simply told them the truth.

“Sometimes a person makes a bad choice,” I told them on the first snowy morning. “But his choice is never your fault.”

I stood by the window and watched the snow cover the yard. All three children sat on the floor and were building a cardboard house. They had drawn three small stars on the roof.

And I held in my hands the small wooden box whose lid had three stars engraved on it. That box now held not only old documents. It held the children’s first drawing, the hospital bracelets, and the first signature of my new life.

Steam appeared on the window. With my finger I drew three small circles.

Luka looked at me.

“Mother, are you home now?”

I went to the children, sat down on the floor, and hugged them to my heart.

“Now I am,” I told them. “Now I am truly home.”

Three stars on the lid of the wooden box glittered in the white light.

This time no one would take them away from me.
