Part 4 — For Christmas, my mother-in-law gave my child a cheap candle, but when the red box was opened, her smile disappeared

Miranda’s last words were seemingly cut in two by the clock hanging in the room.

Brandon held the phone to his ear.

“Yes, officer. No one threatened anyone. Yes, the lawyer is with me. Yes, we have all the documents here.”

Jin was still standing by the door. A few minutes earlier she had been the woman who thought the entire room obeyed her rules. Now she was gripping the handle of her bag so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“Miranda, this is a misunderstanding,” she said.

“No, Jin. This is the result of your choice.”

“You are my lawyer.”

“I was.”

Jin opened her eyes wide.

“What do you mean, you were?”

Miranda closed the folder.

“From today, I no longer represent you. You asked me to hide documents concerning Holly’s rights. I refused you. Then you filed a false report with the police against my client. From now on I will only ensure that the material in the case is legally transferred to the appropriate authorities.”

Jin looked at Brandon.

“You were doing this behind my back.”

“For three years I asked you to say to Holly at least once: ‘You are my granddaughter.’”

“It is only a word.”

Holly raised her head.

“Words are important to me.”

Jin looked at her, but in Holly’s gaze there was no longer the little girl who had been waiting for her approval. There was only exhaustion.

The police called us about twenty minutes later. They temporarily suspended the report against Brandon because they had already obtained the house-camera recordings. The recording showed how Jin herself went to the police station, how she gave them only an edited conversation, and how she hid the remaining material.

But the heaviest video was the one Miranda showed us later that same evening.

A hidden camera in Jin’s office had been installed during an audit connected to the fund. On the screen Jin sat at the desk and arranged documents. Richard stood in front of her.

“If Brandon does not sign,” Jin was saying, “I will remove Holly completely. First I will declare her a guest, then I will tell her not to come to family events anymore.”

Richard’s voice sounded:

“She is a child, Jin.”

“Children remember what you teach them. If I do not show her today that she stands outside, tomorrow she will demand everything of mine.”

Brandon, standing by the screen, lowered his head.

Holly closed her eyes.

I put my arm around her shoulders.

Jin’s words were still sounding in the room, but now they were coming toward her in her own voice. She was listening to herself and for the first time saw on her face what we had been seeing for three years.

“Turn it off,” she whispered.

Miranda stopped the recording.

“You said it yourself.”

“I was angry.”

“Anger is an explanation, not an excuse.”

Richard leaned against the wall.

“I signed for you that day, Jin. I thought it was only a tax form.”

“Are you standing against me now?”

“No. For the first time I am standing on the child’s side.”

Jin sat down on the chair. Her bag fell to the floor, and a golden Christmas card appeared from its side. On it, in her own handwriting, was written: “Family stands above everything.”

Brandon looked at that card.

“Did you write this?”

Jin could not answer.

That evening we did not return to Jin’s house to take our things. Miranda said she would bring everything to us later. But two days later Richard himself called us.

“I left Holly’s things in her room,” he said. “Jin demanded that I lock the door. I couldn’t do it.”

The room was small. A rainbow drawn by Holly hung on the wall, and one ballerina figurine stood on the windowsill. Her pink pajamas had been left on the bed. The golden dress hung over the back of the chair, and in the pocket of that same dress lay the tag removed from the candle.

“For Brandon’s girl.”

Holly picked it up.

“I don’t want this anymore.”

“Throw it away?” I asked.

She shook her head.

“No. I will keep it so I remember what I must never become.”

Brandon lowered his eyes. His breathing became heavier.

“You will never become like that.”

“Because you told me who I am.”

Several weeks later everything reached court, but we did not go to the courtroom to see victory over Jin. We went there to defend Holly’s rights.

The judge transferred the right to manage the fund to Brandon. Jin’s false report was officially canceled, while her signed documents and recordings were attached to the case. She was not sentenced to prison, because Brandon asked for only one thing: that she stay away from Holly until Holly herself decided otherwise.

When leaving the courthouse, Jin looked back once.

Holly did not wave.

Not because she hated her.

Because for the first time she was not trying to calm her.

Three months later we moved to a new city. We rented a small house near a river. In the morning the smell of a bakery came through the window, and before leaving for work Brandon always put one apple and two colored pencils in Holly’s bag.

I started working at a library. After returning from school, Holly came directly to the children’s section and drew at the table.

One day she held out a large sheet of paper to me.

“Look.”

Four people stood on the paper. Me, Brandon, Holly, and the little dog that had hidden under the table on that Christmas morning. A yellow sun was drawn above, and below, in Holly’s unfinished letters, it said: “Here everyone has their own place.”

The first snow came at the end of November.

Holly stood by the window and drew a small face on the glass with her palm.

“Dad, if Grandma ever apologizes, should I forgive her?”

Brandon came out of the kitchen. He was holding three cups.

“Forgiveness is your choice, Holly. But forgiveness does not mean that you have to stand beside her again.”

“What does Mom think?”

I put the cup on the table.

“I think you can forgive and still protect yourself.”

Holly thought for a while.

“Then I am not ready now.”

“That is also a real answer.”

One December evening a letter came from Jin. My name was written on the envelope. Inside there were only two sentences: “I want to speak to you at least once. Everything was not as it seemed.”

Brandon read the letter and put it on the table.

“You are not obliged to answer.”

Holly looked at the paper.

“I will answer.”

She took a pencil and for a long time wrote nothing. Finally she added only one sentence:

“I am already in the place where I no longer have to prove that I belong to a family.”

We sent the letter to Jin.

No answer came.

That night Holly lit a candle — a new, thick candle with the scent of cinnamon. The old cheap vanilla candle stood on the shelf, and no one had lit it anymore.

I put the red velvet box beside the candle. The copper key was no longer inside. It was now kept in the drawer of Holly’s desk in our small house.

Holly looked at the flame.

“Mom, do you know why I kept that tag?”

“Why?”

“So I never forget: the person who called me little could not decide what I would become.”

Outside the window, snow was quietly falling on the city. The house smelled of cinnamon, Brandon was washing dishes in the kitchen, and Holly was drawing the final line of her picture.

I picked up the old tag and put it into the red box.

This time I locked the box.

And I gave the key to Holly.

Holly put her arms around me.

“Now this is my home, right?”

I smiled at her.

“It always was.”

The little fire brought the shadow of the golden dress to life in the candle flame.

This time Holly was no longer a guest.

Missed the beginning?
