Part 4 — My husband expelled me to the sofa because of guests, but after my calm response, the smile disappeared from his face

As soon as I read Marko’s message, I called Nata.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“At the station. I arrived this morning. Teren told me that everything had been agreed with you and that he only needed a witness for the document.”

“Did you sign anything?”

“No. But I sent him a copy of my identity document.”

For several seconds, we both fell silent.

“Marko, you need to come to the police now.”

“I am already going.”

Nata immediately informed the bank manager. Temporary restrictions were placed on the accounts, all transfers were stopped, and the applications sent by Teren were handed over to the legal department.

Several hours later, his lawyer also contacted us.

“Mr. Teren wants you to reach an agreement,” he told me in a calm, tired voice.

“About what?”

“About withdrawing the attempt to sell the apartment, completing the divorce peacefully, and withdrawing the complaint.”

“In exchange for what?”

“He will give you the car and half of the joint savings.”

I stood by the window. Outside, the morning sun was reflected on the wet road.

“This is my apartment. My money. And after his attempt, part of my savings is no longer a joint matter either.”

“Mrs. Vens, the court process will be difficult for both of you.”

“Are you his lawyer or mine?”

“I am only offering you a solution.”

“I already have a solution. I am no longer living with that man.”

The voice on the other end of the line fell silent.

“Then at least the complaint can be withdrawn.”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time in my life.”

The lawyer exhaled.

“In that case, I can no longer represent your husband.”

The call ended.

That same evening, Teren was being questioned at the police station. Nata told me that he denied everything until the investigator played the voice recording.

In the small room there were only a table, two chairs, and a clock hanging on the wall. Teren sat on one side, the investigator directly opposite him.

“Listen,” said the investigator.

The recorder clicked.

“If Alara resists us, we will say that the apartment is joint property.”

Teren immediately shook his head.

“That is my voice, but the context was different.”

“The next part.”

“Nobody will believe her. I have been her husband for ten years.”

!!!  Mein Mann wollte das Haus meiner verstorbenen Mutter verkaufen, doch als ich den Brief öffnete, verschwand sein selbstsicheres Lächeln

Teren covered his face with his hands.

“I did not want to deceive her.”

“Then why did you prepare documents for surrendering her property?” the investigator asked.

“The family pressured me.”

“There is no family in your voice. Only your plan can be heard.”

These words reached me later, but when Nata told me everything, it was as if I too were sitting in the room. For the first time, Teren heard his own words through someone else’s mouth. He could no longer change my view, deny my memories, or give another name to that night.

Two days later I had to return home.

Not to live there. To collect my things.

The electronic lock opened the door again with the same cold knock. Vonda’s suitcases were no longer in the living room. The sofa had been left alone in the sunroom. On the velvet there was a mark from her heavy bag in one place.

I entered the bedroom and opened the wardrobe. Half of my clothes were gone. Teren had rearranged everything, as if my departure had not been temporary, but proof of his victory.

A photograph from our wedding stood at the head of the bed. I took it out of the frame and left only my side empty.

But in the study I found the heaviest thing: my chair, on which a small wooden keychain still hung. It had been made in my father’s workshop, and one word was written on it—“Home.”

I took the keychain in my hand.

At that moment I realized that I was not leaving this room. I had already been gone from here for a long time.

The legal process lasted several weeks. Teren was charged with attempting to use forged documents and fraudulently disposing of someone else’s property. At first Vonda blamed everything on me.

“You destroyed the family,” she told me at one of the meetings.

“No,” I answered. “I only opened the door and walked out.”

“Teren was your husband.”

“A husband who wanted to drive me out of my own house.”

Vonda could not answer me.

At the final divorce meeting, Teren looked much smaller. He no longer stood beside an expensive watch, and he no longer had a confident voice. His hands lay on his knees, and he nervously intertwined his fingers.

“Alara, could you speak to me at least once as you did before?” he asked me.

“Before, I believed what you said.”

“I loved you.”

“Perhaps. But love that turns a person into a guest in their own home is not enough.”

“I lost everything.”

“No. You lost what had never been yours.”

I did not say this in anger. It was simply the truth.

Three months later I rented a small apartment in the northern part of the city. I sold my old house because I no longer wanted to live within those walls where I had to earn my place every day. The new apartment was much smaller, but sunlight entered the kitchen in the morning and nobody asked me how long I planned to stay there.

Nata helped me start a new job. I worked at a small architectural studio and, for the first time, wrote my name on a contract myself, without a mediator, husband, or family.

Marko also returned. One week he came to me with hot bread in his hand and a small box.

“This is for you,” he told me.

Inside the box was my old pen. Teren had found it in the document folder and left it for Marko.

“How are you?” Marko asked me.

“Sometimes calm. Sometimes very angry.”

“That is normal.”

“The strangest thing is that now I feel guilty.”

“For what?”

“For leaving.”

Marko shook his head.

“Alara, you did not leave the family. You left a place where nobody wanted you to remain.”

Several weeks later, Nata’s little daughter, Elene, came to me. She was drawing with colored pencils at the kitchen table. When she handed me the sheet, a little house was drawn on it, and on the door there was a large yellow handle.

“This is your house,” she told me.

“Why does the door have such a large handle?”

“Because you open and close it yourself.”

I smiled at her words.

That night I slept for the first time with my phone left without sound. In the morning I found the first layer of snow on the windowsill. The room was cold, and the kettle slowly came to a boil. I still had not arranged all my things in the small apartment, but not one corner reminded me that I was unnecessary.

Four months later I received a letter from Teren. It was handwritten. I immediately recognized his handwriting on the paper.

!!!  RÉSZ 4 — Négy évig küldtem haza a pénzem, de amikor váratlanul megjelentem, a feleségem mögött mindenki elhallgatott

“I want us to meet at least once. Now I understand everything. My mother has left too. I lost my job. The lawyer told me that if you change your statement, my punishment will be reduced. Please, do only this.”

I read the letter to the end and then put it in the kitchen drawer. I did not tear it up. I did not write an answer either.

A week later another message arrived.

“Are you really never coming back?”

This time I answered.

“No.”

The second message came immediately.

“Why?”

I stood by the window. Outside, children were breaking the snow with their feet, while the house Elene had drawn hung on the refrigerator.

“Because now, for the first time, I am home.”

I turned off the phone.

I put the blue folder in the drawer of the desk. It no longer contained only the old ownership document. It contained the police conclusion, the bank letter, the divorce document, and the key to the new apartment.

The folder was heavy, but it no longer frightened me.

In the evening I locked the door. The small wooden keychain hung from my hand, with one word written on it—“Home.”

For years I thought that a home was walls.

Now I knew.

A home is the place where no one should hide your key.

Missed the beginning?
