Part 4 — I Let My Wife Kiss Another Man at the Party, and in the Morning Her Face Lost Its Color and Her Hands Began to Tremble

After Melissa’s call, I froze completely in the clinic corridor for several seconds. The envelope was in my hand. White, ordinary, with only my surname written on it. That small piece of paper suddenly acquired the weight of our entire family.

“What did Grant tell the police?” I asked.

“That you are forcibly holding Lauren at home, that you took her phone, and that you stole the company’s confidential records.”

“And the police believed him?”

“They only heard his complaint. But I have already sent copies of the recording to the prosecutor.”

Lauren tried to rise from the chair. Her knees were trembling.

“Noah is with my sister. Grant will go there.”

“He won’t,” I told her.

It was the first time I said those words in a way that I myself believed.

Melissa immediately called my sister, Emily.

“Lock the door. Keep Noah inside the house. Don’t open it to a stranger, especially Grant Keller.”

Emily’s voice trembled over the phone.

“He is already at the end of the street.”

Melissa gave me a sharp look.

“The police are on their way.”

At those same minutes Grant was trying to write his own story at our house. He had not broken the door by force. He was simply standing in the yard, handing the folder to the police officers and putting on the face of a calm, worried husband.

“My wife is inside,” he had said. “Jack may hurt her.”

But the neighbor’s camera was working. Grant had arrived ten minutes earlier and attached some small device to the door lock. He did not know that the camera was filming his hands directly.

Melissa sent this recording to the police.

“He was trying to enter the house,” I said.

“Now they will see that themselves,” she answered.

Grant still had one lever: an old audio recording in which Lauren said that she would transfer the money. He wanted to present that phrase as a confession of a crime.

But the recording had a second part.

Melissa opened a computer in the clinic’s small meeting room. We listened to Grant’s voice again from the beginning.

“If you don’t transfer it, I’ll tell Jack that I am Noah’s father.”

Then Lauren’s voice:

“You have no right to touch the child.”

“I have as much right as I need.”

“You yourself told me this was only blackmail.”

“Blackmail is the word weak people use when a deal is going against them.”

Something collapsed inside me. For years I had thought that Lauren was hiding only betrayal from me. Now I was learning that she had lived in fear, but that fear did not erase her guilt.

Grant had spoken his own words before me. Not in someone’s account. Not in a court document. In his own voice.

And for the first time he realized that the strongest evidence against him was exactly what he had prepared for others.

Melissa sent the package of documents to the prosecutor’s office. The financial records, false signatures, company cameras, threatening messages, and old reports from my father’s case matched one another.

That evening Grant’s lawyer called him.

“I no longer advise you to go to this woman’s house.”

“You are my lawyer. Your duty is to defend me.”

“Your defense is becoming impossible if you yourself continue creating evidence.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that from this moment I am no longer remaining your representative.”

Grant threw the phone against the wall.

His former assistant, who agreed to cooperate with the prosecutor’s office, told us this information later.

At the clinic, I was still looking at the envelope.

Lauren stood in front of me. Her face was wet with tears.

“Whatever is written there, Noah is my son,” she told me. “You are his father in the sense that means more than this. But you still have to know the truth.”

I opened the envelope.

The result excluded Grant Keller from fatherhood.

The next sheet read: “Jack Holloway is the biological father of the child.”

Lauren lowered her eyes.

And for the first time since that morning, I exhaled.

“You knew?” I asked.

“I always believed he was yours. But I had no proof.”

“And Grant used that doubt as a weapon for years.”

“Yes.”

I went to the window. The snow was already falling heavily.

“I cannot return to you, Lauren.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“But Noah must not be punished for our mistakes.”

“I know.”

This was our most honest conversation after twelve years.

The following weeks passed amid the sound of calls, interrogations, and emptied rooms. Grant was proven guilty of misappropriating company funds, using false signatures, intimidation, and financial fraud. The trial lasted a long time, but I did not attend every hearing. He no longer needed my hatred. His own words were already enough against him.

!!!  Tres herederos dejaron a mi hija al borde de la muerte y se rieron de mi denuncia, hasta que uno dejó de sonreír

Lauren confessed to the crime. She said that at first she had been a victim of blackmail, but later she had consciously taken steps that destroyed my trust. The court did not sentence her to prison, though she was forbidden from working for the company, her money was confiscated, and she could see Noah only under supervision.

One day, after the hearing, Grant listened to the audio recording. His voice came from the speakers in the courtroom: “He’ll survive.”

Grant raised his head.

The judge asked:

“Is that your voice?”

“It is taken out of context.”

“But did you say those words?”

For the first time Grant could not find an answer.

“Yes,” he whispered.

He heard his own voice in a foreign room and realized that he could no longer convince anyone that he was another person.

I sold our house. The last fragment of the shattered cup in the kitchen lay in the corner for several weeks. I could have cleaned it, but I could not do it. That fragment was the only thing from that morning that still could not lie to me.

One green scarf remained in Lauren’s closet. I did not take it. From Noah’s room I took his old soccer ball and placed it under the window in the new apartment.

Three months later I moved to a new city. I started working at a small engineering firm. In the mornings I made coffee myself, in the evenings I built wooden models with Noah, and on Thursdays I took him to his piano lesson again.

One evening, when it snowed for the first time, Noah asked me:

“Dad, why doesn’t Mom live with us anymore?”

I closed the window. Outside, white flakes fell on the street lamps.

“Because sometimes adults make decisions that take time to repair.”

“Is she a bad person?”

“No. But a person can do something bad and still be able to make a better choice.”

Noah thought.

“Do you still love her?”

“Differently. In a way that means I no longer expect her to save me.”

He nodded and continued drawing with pencils. Three people stood in a snowy yard in the picture: me, him, and a small house with a yellow light on its roof.

“This is our new house,” he said.

“I like it.”

“Will Mom have a place too?”

“If she ever wants one, she will always know where the door is. But we will no longer wait by the door.”

!!!  Fiica mea a spus că un bărbat intră noaptea în dormitorul nostru, iar când am aprins lampa, soția mea a încremenit

Several weeks later I received a letter from Grant. It was not from prison; his lawyer sent it to me. The letter said that Grant wanted to meet with me and explain everything.

I forwarded the letter to Melissa.

“What should I answer?” I asked.

“You are not obliged to answer anything.”

I tore the envelope.

Lauren also called me that same evening.

“Jack, I only want five minutes.”

“Five minutes cannot change many things.”

“I know.”

“Noah will come to you tomorrow, as planned.”

“Thank you.”

“There is no need to thank me. He is our son.”

“Do you still think that you will ever forgive me?”

I was silent for a long time.

“Forgiveness does not mean returning, Lauren.”

“I know.”

“I choose peace. You should choose it too.”

She cried quietly.

“Goodbye, Jack.”

“Goodbye.”

The call ended. At home Noah was playing the piano. Several notes did not fit together, but he did not stop. He played from the beginning.

I entered the kitchen and saw the small copper bell on the shelf. I had brought it from the old house. Every morning, when Noah returned from school, he rang the bell. Now he took hold of it and rang it once.

The sound spread through the room.

Outside was the first snow, and inside, for the first time, I was no longer waiting for anyone.

The bell rang again.

This time the door was opening for me.

Missed the beginning?
