Part 4 — My Parents Threw Me Out of the House at the Christmas Table, but Mother’s Unexpected Exclamation Froze Father in His Place

The phone froze in my hand.

The man on the other end was still breathing.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“A person who can protect you or destroy you. The choice is yours.”

Archil waved his hand for me not to answer. I ended the call and immediately sent the recording to another device.

Mother stood up.

“Valeria, he is my enemy. Do not trust him.”

“Then why does he know everything?”

Mother pressed her lips together.

“I will explain this to you.”

“You had three years to explain.”

Father stood by the window. The snowy yard was visible behind him, while the black car had already disappeared.

“Monika, did you really forge her signature?”

Mother did not raise her head.

“The situation gets out of hand when I am alone.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I had to save the family!”

“You had to save yourself,” I told her.

Archil calmly closed the folder.

“Now it is necessary to check all devices and bank access. Mrs. Monika, please put your phone on the table.”

“Why?”

“Because several amounts have left your account in the last few minutes.”

Mother’s face changed.

“That is impossible.”

The bank employee showed the phone screen. Money was being transferred from Mother’s account to a foreign account. The recipient was the same legal entity that had called me shortly before.

Father stepped back.

“You were paying that man?”

“He is only an intermediary.”

“For what?”

Mother fell silent.

At that very moment, the red light of a small camera installed in the room blinked. I had installed the camera only for the security of the house, but Mother thought that the old device no longer worked. And for three years I had stored all the recordings in a secure archive.

Archil opened the computer.

“Now you will hear what you yourselves said.”

The date of May of the previous year appeared on the screen. In the footage, Mother was talking to Sebastian in the kitchen.

“As long as Valeria is in the house, everything will be resolved,” Mother was saying. “She thinks she is helping the family. The main thing is that she must not find out how much debt we have.”

Sebastian asked quietly:

“What if she finds out?”

“Then we will tell her that Father’s heart is bad and that it will be her fault if we lose the house.”

Mother looked at the screen and for the first time heard her own voice through someone else. All confidence fell away from her face.

Sebastian lowered his eyes.

“I knew this,” he said.

Father turned toward him.

“You too?”

“Only about the car. I thought Valeria was doing it willingly.”

I looked at them and something strange happened: I did not want either to shout or to take revenge. I was simply tired of saving them.

“Tomorrow morning we are going to the bank,” I said. “Then to the police. I will not allow the house to be sold until the debt is removed from my name. But I will no longer live here.”

“Valeria,” Father came toward me, “I am your father.”

“I know. That is why I waited for the truth. And now I want you to wait for its consequences too.”

That night Mother called me several times. Once she apologized. The second time she threatened me. The third time there was only the sound of crying. I answered none of the calls.

The next morning we received a notice from the court. The case of the forged signature and financial fraud was officially beginning. Mother’s lawyer refused to come to the meeting because he realized in advance how many recordings and bank documents existed.

Mother still tried to regain control.

She said that I was an ungrateful daughter.

And for the first time I heard these words from the room where I had silently paid for everyone’s life for years.

At the hearing, the judge played the recording. Mother’s voice sounded in the courtroom:

“As long as Valeria is in the house, everything will be resolved.”

Mother lowered her eyes.

!!!  At my wedding they mocked me because I wore a military uniform, but the silence in the chapel suddenly erased Vanessa’s smile

Father buried his head in his hands.

Sebastian said for the first time:

“This was also my fault.”

The court canceled the loan issued in my name, the house temporarily passed under my legal control, while Mother was held responsible for fraud and forging a signature. Sebastian had to return the car and reimburse the illegally received funds. The court did not find Father guilty, but he paid all the remaining bills himself from his own savings.

It was justice, but it did not feel like victory.

Victory came later.

Three weeks later I was sitting in the small kitchen of a new apartment. The city rooftops were visible through the window. My company was already working with two new clients, I made coffee myself in the mornings, and no one could change my decisions at the work desk anymore.

One evening Sebastian’s seven-year-old daughter, Sopho, came to me. She was holding a sheet of paper.

“Aunt Valeria, I drew this for you.”

A small house was drawn on the paper. A huge sun was above the house, and beside the door stood a woman holding a compass.

“Is this me?” I asked.

“Yes. Father said that now you know where you are going.”

Something caught in my throat.

“What do you think?”

Sopho shrugged.

“I think whoever knows the road should no longer carry someone else on their back.”

I smiled at her words.

Sopho was a child, but she said exactly what I had been unable to say for years.

Months passed.

The house was finally sold. The remaining bank debt was paid with the money received, Father rented a small apartment and began paying the bills independently for the first time in his life. Sebastian moved to another job and began staying with Sopho more often.

Mother wrote to me once every few months.

“Come, let us forget everything.”

“Family does not leave each other like this.”

“I am your mother.”

One day she sent me only one sentence: “If you help me again, this time I will use it correctly.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I will not give you money anymore. But you can contact a lawyer and settle everything legally.”

Mother called me immediately.

“How can you speak to me so coldly?”

“I am speaking to you calmly.”

“You have changed.”

“Yes.”

“Will you ever forgive me?”

I stood by the window. The first snow was falling outside.

“Forgiveness does not mean that I will give you access to my life again.”

There was silence on the other end of the line for a long time.

“So, this is your final answer?”

“Yes.”

I ended the call.

That evening I attached Sopho’s drawing to the work desk. Beside it I placed the small copper compass from my grandmother, which had hung on the suitcase handle that Christmas night. Old scratches were still visible on its surface, but the needle no longer trembled.

For the first time, I knew where I was going.

The compass quietly showed me the way—and I no longer allowed anyone to take it from my hand.

Missed the beginning?
