Part 4 — My six-year-old girl was humiliated before a rich woman, but at the very first note of the music her smile disappeared

The photograph showed the door of the old dance studio. The paint was scraped off, the windows were broken, but above the door the words “The Evening Star” could still be read.

On the back of the photograph it said: “The one who took your mother’s name away is still alive.”

Four hours remained until six in the morning.

Adrian placed the phone on the table.

“You will not go alone.”

“The message says that I should come alone.”

“People who threaten you with a child do not deserve rules.”

The old woman barely rose from the chair.

“Mariana, do not go. Let us call the police first.”

“We will call the police. But I want to know who did this to my mother.”

Celeste laughed loudly, although her voice was trembling.

“You are all crazy. This woman simply found a rich family and is now trying to get money.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“You offered the money.”

“It was a joke.”

“Two hundred people heard it. The cameras recorded it.”

Her face changed.

At that same moment Adrian’s lawyer, who was standing at the far end of the hall, took out his phone.

“Mr. Vale, the bank called me. A large sum was transferred from your charitable foundation’s account this morning.”

“How much?”

“Eleven million dollars. The recipient company is registered in Celeste’s name.”

Celeste turned pale.

“That is a lie.”

“The transfer was confirmed with your electronic signature,” the lawyer said. “I can no longer represent you until the investigation is over.”

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“You promised that you would never use family money against me.”

“It was not my family’s money. It was for sick children.”

“I did everything because of you!”

“No. You did everything for yourself.”

The police came at half past five in the morning. The guests had already dispersed. The camera recordings were taken, while the waiters quietly began cleaning the hall. Silver trays lay stacked on one another, and the drops of water left on them shone like little mirrors.

Celeste tried to escape, but investigators were waiting for her at the door.

“Ms. Winthrop, we have several questions for you.”

!!!  Il mio ex marito mi invitò alle sue nozze per umiliarmi, ma quando entrai nel giardino la sua sicurezza svanì

“Adrian!”

He did not move.

“Tell them that this is a misunderstanding.”

“You answer them yourself, after insulting my family in front of everyone.”

“I love you.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“Love does not teach a person to humiliate someone else’s child.”

Celeste was taken away.

But the hardest moment came afterward.

In a small hotel room Adrian turned on the camera recording. On the screen Celeste could again be seen raising her glass.

“Dance better than me and I will give your mother a million.”

Then my face, Lucia’s frightened eyes, and the people’s laughter appeared.

For the first time Adrian heard his own voice, from when he had stood silently before.

“Celeste, be quiet.”

In the recording his voice was weak and late.

He watched the screen.

“I was standing there,” he said.

“Yes.”

“I heard everything.”

“Yes.”

“And until the music began, I did nothing.”

I gave no answer.

Adrian ran a hand over his face.

“I thought silence was neutral.”

“Sometimes silence takes the side of the person who is hurting someone else.”

He nodded. For the first time he was not trying to justify himself.

The old woman stood by the window, holding the letter with both hands.

“Amelia left because she was afraid of her father,” she said. “And I waited for her return all my life, without even realizing that my silence resembled losing her.”

I went to her.

“Mother was not angry with you.”

“How do you know?”

“From the last letter. It said that you should forgive yourself at least once.”

The old woman closed her eyes.

“Those words are hers.”

“Yes.”

That morning the police took us to the old dance studio. We found the lock on the door broken. Inside there was dust, the smell of burned wood, and half-burned mirrors hanging on the walls.

A small iron box was found on the old floor.

The box contained Rose’s letters, several photographs, and a newspaper clipping. One of them said that Amelia Vale had disappeared and that the influential family lawyer had stopped the search for her.

The lawyer’s name was the same as the one checking the transfer of money from Celeste’s foundation.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann ließ mich im sinkenden Geländewagen zurück, doch als er ans Ufer blickte, verschwand sein Lächeln

He already understood that the matter did not concern Celeste alone.

The investigation established that Amelia had really fled that night, while her father threatened everyone who tried to find her. Later the fire was found not to have been accidental. The old records were hidden, and the studio was bought by one of the family’s companies.

Rose hid her own name so that I would not grow up in the shadow of the people who controlled her life.

Several weeks later a case was opened against Celeste for fraudulently transferred money, intimidation, and financial fraud. Her engagement was canceled.

I did not go to court for revenge.

I decided to go only when Lucia asked me:

“Is that woman afraid of being in prison?”

“Probably.”

“We were afraid because of her too.”

“Yes.”

“Are we not afraid anymore?”

I looked at her little fingers.

“Now we have a choice.”

Several months passed.

We moved from Boston to a small town where a milk truck stopped by the window in the morning and the neighbors knew one another’s names. I began giving dance lessons at the local cultural center.

On the very first day, old wooden boards creaked under the floor. The sound reminded me of Mother’s studio, but this time I was not afraid.

Lucia drew on the wall after the lessons. She drew three women holding hands, and above them she drew a small yellow star.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“You, me, and your mother.”

“Is Grandmother Rose here too?”

“She is the star. So that we do not lose her.”

The old woman called us twice a week. At first Lucia called her only “Grandmother of the Melody.” Then little by little she named her “Grandmother Helen.”

One evening the first snow came. Lucia drew a small elephant on the window with her finger.

“Mom, shall we dance our song tomorrow too?”

“If you want.”

“I want to. Now because we are happy.”

That same night Adrian wrote to me.

“I testified against Celeste. The foundation’s money will be returned. If you ever need help, I am here.”

Several minutes later a second message arrived.

!!!  A nővérem cipőt dobott a várandós feleségemre, a szüleim pedig nevettek — aztán apám hirtelen elhallgatott

“Could we start once more?”

I looked at the screen for a long time. Adrian did not turn out to be a bad person, but that night I learned that being a good person should not be remembered by someone only when the truth is already before everyone’s eyes.

I wrote to him:

“Thank you for everything. But I no longer want to start over. I have already continued.”

Then I turned off the phone.

I took Mother’s things out of the closet. I kept the letters separately. The photographs—in a small wooden box. And I pinned the silver elephant brooch to Lucia’s blue dress.

“Now this is yours,” I told her.

“Because it belonged to Grandmother?”

“Because you chose to dance when the whole hall was waiting for your fall.”

Lucia ran a finger over the brooch.

Then we turned on the music.

She stood in the middle of the floor. She took one step. She spun. And finally she performed “the fallen star”—the movement that a girl who had once been lost taught to her mother, her mother taught to me, and I taught to my child.

Outside the window, snow was quietly falling on the city.

The brooch shone on her little dress.

This time it was no longer a sign of loss.

It was a sign of return.

Missed the beginning?
