Part 4 — When They Considered Taking My Mother to the Doctor Humiliating, the Color Drained from My Husband’s Face and a Heavy Silence Fell over the Room

“They were already at your house before coming to the clinic, and now they are looking for what is not on the chip…”

I read the message several times before the words made sense.

“What is left at home?” I asked Mother.

The tiredness passed over her face.

“The second part.”

Ricardo headed toward the door.

Dr. Nikoloz grabbed his arm.

“You are not going anywhere.”

“Let go of me.”

“The police will be here soon.”

Ricardo looked toward me. In his gaze was still that old command with which he had silenced me for years. But this time fear stood behind it.

“Mariana, please, listen to me. If they take something from that house, they will destroy all of us.”

“Who is ‘all’?”

He could not find an answer.

The phone rang again. It was Nino.

“Mariana, two men have arrived at the house. They are Ricardo’s employees. The police are already coming, but know this: your mother hid the main evidence in the old ceramic pot.”

I looked at Mother.

“In that pot?”

She nodded.

“At the bottom of the pot. There is a paper there on which all the accounts and passwords are written. The chip contains only the recordings.”

Ricardo closed his eyes.

“Teresa, why did you do this?”

“Because at least once you had to be made to answer.”

The police arrived in ten minutes. Two investigators, a woman and a man, entered the room. Ricardo stepped back when he saw them.

“Mr. Ricardo, we need to speak with you.”

“I will say nothing without a lawyer.”

“That is your right.”

But the female investigator took out handcuffs.

Her hand moved calmly.

Ricardo turned toward me.

“Mariana, tell them that this is a misunderstanding.”

I looked into his eyes and for the first time felt no guilt because I could no longer save him.

“This is no longer a misunderstanding.”

The metal of the handcuffs made a sharp sound.

Ricardo fell silent.

Then the police searched our house. I was not there, but later Nino sent us a recording that his neighbor had filmed from the window. In the video one of Ricardo’s employees was kneeling on the kitchen floor and smashing my mother’s pot.

His voice could be heard clearly.

“It must be here. The boss said it was in the pot.”

The second man asked:

“What if we do not find it?”

“Then we will frighten his wife.”

Silence fell over the room as we watched the video. I looked at the walls of my own house and understood for the first time how long I had been living in danger.

Ricardo’s lawyer called me that same evening.

“Mrs. Mariana, my client is ready to talk to you about everything.”

“I have nothing more to talk to him about.”

“Perhaps he can offer you conditions that are important to you.”

“What conditions?”

“Leaving the house, a certain amount of money, covering your mother’s medical expenses.”

“And in return?”

The lawyer fell silent.

“Taking back the recordings,” he said at last.

“Tell him that for the first time in my life my peace has no price.”

The next day the investigator summoned me. I sat in a small room, and on the table lay the chip removed from my mother. They turned on the recorder.

Ricardo’s own voice sounded.

“No one will believe you, old woman.”

I already knew these words, but hearing them through someone else’s ears changed everything. The voice that had seemed ordinary at home sounded cruel and cold in the recording.

“I will tell Mariana that she is in debt because of you.”

Ricardo was silent for several seconds.

Then he muttered:

“You are strong only when you are afraid.”

I sat on the chair and looked at my fingers. Suddenly I realized that these words had also been said about me. For years I had considered fear his power. In reality, it was my silent submission.

Ricardo’s lawyer lowered his head.

“After these recordings, defending my client will be very difficult.”

“Will he admit it?”

“No.”

“Then what are you waiting for?”

“For you to save him again.”

I slowly stood up.

“I will not do that anymore.”

That evening I entered Mother’s ward. The last ray of sun fell by the window. A small copper bell lay beside her bed. The nurse had taken it out of the bag and cleaned it because the handle had become dirty during the procedure.

Mother looked at the bell.

“Let us not go back home anymore.”

“We will not go back.”

“Your things?”

“Things can be found again.”

“Ricardo?”

I looked outside the window.

“He made his choice himself.”

Several weeks later the court authorized opening a case against Ricardo. It turned out that the savings of thirty-three people had been appropriated in his company. The account opened in my name became one of the pieces of evidence. Mother’s recordings showed that he was not merely an intermediary—he directed everything.

Ricardo remained in custody.

I did not watch his punishment. I did not go to the courtroom even once when he wanted to mention my name. I submitted my testimony in writing. It was short and precise.

“I no longer protect him.”

It was enough.

Three months later I moved with Mother to a small seaside town. There I rented one room above a shop. In the mornings the smell of bread rose from below, and in the evenings the harbor lights could be seen from the window.

I started working in a library. Every day I arranged books, checked old cards, and read fairy tales to children. For the first time in my life, going to work did not depend on my husband’s mood.

Mother slowly recovered. She no longer hid her pain. If something bothered her, she said so immediately.

One morning, while I was cutting apples in the kitchen, she said to me:

“You know what I remember most?”

“What?”

“Your voice in the clinic. The first time you said: ‘I no longer care about his anger.’”

I smiled.

“I was afraid.”

“But you said it anyway.”

“Yes.”

Mother showed me a small piece of paper hanging on the window. On it was a drawing by my grandson, Luka. Luka came to us on weekends and always said that the library stairs belonged to me.

In the drawing three people stood by the sea. Each held a small yellow sun in their hand.

“This is you,” Luka told me. “You are not afraid anymore.”

“How did you understand?”

“Because no one is standing behind you here.”

His answer struck me more strongly than any court verdict.

In winter the first snow came to the town. I was walking home from the library when I received an unknown message on my phone.

“Mariana, everything has gone too far. I can explain to you. If you come, I will cover your mother’s treatment expenses completely. We will start again.”

His name was written below.

Ricardo.

I looked at the screen for a long time. Then I wrote a reply.

“Returning to you is no longer part of my life. I will take care of my mother myself. As for your consequences, deal with them yourself.”

After sending it, I deleted the message.

My hands did not even tremble.

When I arrived home, Mother was waiting for me at the door. The little copper bell still hung from her old knitted bag. She handed the bag to me.

“Carry it now.”

“Why?”

“Because you should always hear the sound of returning home.”

I put the bag over my shoulder. The bell rang once, then fell silent.

I opened the door.

This time fear no longer had a voice in the house.

Missed the beginning?
