Part 4 — My Sister’s Son Saw a Strange Cake at the Graduation Ceremony, While My Father Could No Longer Hide His Fear for the First Time

Two investigators and one woman stood in the doorway, holding a folder of documents in her hands.

The guests remaining in the hall pressed themselves against the walls.

The investigator showed my father his identification.

“Mr. David, we have several questions for you.”

“This is my grandson’s graduation ceremony,” my father said. “All this can be discussed tomorrow.”

“It cannot be discussed.”

The second investigator put a sealed order on the table.

My mother began to cry.

“David, tell me that this is simply a misunderstanding.”

My father did not look at her.

His first attempt to regain control was to call a lawyer. The phone rang three times before a man answered on the other end.

“I will pay you, just come right now,” my father told the lawyer.

I was standing several steps away, but I could hear his voice clearly.

“Mr. David,” the lawyer answered, “I can no longer remain your representative in this case.”

“What do you mean, you cannot remain?”

“There is a conflict of interest. And your admissions were recorded by phone.”

My father fell silent.

“Who recorded them?”

“Your own phone. The call was saved automatically.”

The connection broke.

My father stared at the screen for several seconds. For the first time I understood what it means when a person becomes entangled in his own words.

Nino turned on the recording.

My father’s voice, which had been heard in the bank video a few minutes earlier, sounded in the hall again.

“If we do not transfer it now, Elena will find everything.”

“I will force Daniel to move in with me. I will use this emotion.”

Hearing his own voice changed my father. He no longer objected. He lowered his head, as if realizing that he himself had opened the door to every word.

Daniel was standing beside me.

“Grandfather,” he said, “did you really think I was that stupid?”

My father looked at him.

“I was protecting the family.”

“No. You were protecting the family name. And you never protected me.”

Claire went up to the investigator.

“I will sign everything necessary. I will return the money too.”

“That no longer depends only on you,” the investigator answered.

My mother came toward me.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Volví de una noche con mi amante y encontré la cuna vacía; cuando mi abogado leyó el mensaje, dejó de respirar

“Elena, please, tell them that I did not know.”

“I know that you did not know everything,” I told her. “But you signed. That day too, nineteen years ago, you signed your silence.”

She lowered her head.

The investigators took my father and Claire away separately. My mother remained, but her presence in the room no longer meant power.

Daniel went to the cake. He plunged the tip of the knife into the white cream and ran it through the middle of the inscription.

“Real” split in two.

“Let’s take this cake out,” he said.

“What should we do with it?”

“Give it out to whoever wants it. I do not want it anymore.”

When we returned home that evening, I entered Daniel’s room as a guest for the first time. On the wall still hung his drawing from when he was six: three people beside a green mountain and a yellow sun above. One woman held a small wooden medal in her hand.

His graduation cap lay on the bed.

On the table lay the watch Claire had given him when he was eighteen. Daniel took off the watch and put it in the drawer.

“I will not throw this away,” he told me. “I want to remember how I did not recognize her gifts.”

“You are guilty of nothing.”

“I know. Now I know.”

Then he hugged me.

I touched his hair and again felt the same little boy who had clung to my hand in the hospital.

“Mom, don’t leave.”

“I won’t leave.”

This time these words were no longer a promise, but a quiet fact.

Three weeks later the court temporarily seized all the funds of the fund. The financial investigation confirmed that my father had been taking money from the account for years, while Claire spent part of it. My mother’s signature was found on one document, but investigators established that she did not know its contents. She gave testimony and for the first time in her life spoke against my father.

My father confessed to the crime.

Claire did too.

I did not go to the courtroom against them with a desire for revenge. I only wanted Daniel’s name to return to his own property.

!!!  On Christmas morning, my daughter-in-law smashed my children’s gifts, but she saw something on the tablet screen and turned pale

Within several months, the principal amount of the fund was restored. The lost part was to be reimbursed from their property by court decision. Daniel began studying at the university and rented his own room in a small apartment.

He called me during the first week.

“Mom, I burned the food today.”

“Did the smoke alarm at least work?”

“Very loudly.”

“Then everything is all right.”

In his laughter I heard that same child again.

I began a new job at the city archive. I organized old documents, checked signatures, and every morning watched from the window the tram that passed at exactly eight o’clock.

At home I formed a new habit: in the evening I made tea, turned off my phone, and sat silently for ten minutes.

Before, silence frightened me.

Now it was mine.

In December Daniel came for Christmas. He brought his first engineering drawing with him. He attached it to the wall and told me:

“This is the plan for our new house.”

“Our?”

“There is a room for you too. Small, but sunny.”

“Will I live with you?”

“No. You will have your own life. But the door will always be open.”

The first snow began outside the window. Daniel scattered flour in the kitchen and tried to bake a cake. The cream turned out too sweet, but we both ate it.

That night I received a letter from Claire.

“Elena, I know that you may not want to see me anymore. I want only one thing: tell Daniel that I regret it. Now I truly regret it. If he ever gives me the opportunity, I will try to fix everything.”

I held the letter in my hands for a long time.

Then I let Daniel read it.

He read it to the end and went to the window.

“Do you want to answer?” I asked.

“Not today.”

“Maybe someday?”

“Maybe. But returning does not mean that I have to return to the place where she left me.”

There was no anger in this answer anymore.

Only a boundary.

Claire contacted me once more in the summer. This time she called me herself.

“Elena, can I talk to you for only five minutes?”

“You can.”

“I have lost everything.”

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Fiul meu și-a scos mama din casă înainte să ajung eu, dar când am deschis ușa biroului, soția lui a amuțit

“No, Claire. You lost what you were taking from others. You did not lose Daniel, because you never had him in the way you thought.”

Silence fell.

“Could you ever forgive me?”

I was standing by the window. Children were riding bicycles in the street.

“Forgiveness is possible. But trust is not a gift. It is built over years.”

“And what should I do?”

“For the first time, demand nothing.”

That was my last answer.

I put down the phone and opened the cabinet. I still kept there the small wooden medal that I had given Daniel when he was six. The scratch left on its edge was still visible, from that evening when I had gripped it so tightly in the graduation hall.

I placed the medal on the windowsill.

The evening sun stood outside. Warm, golden light entered the room. Daniel wrote to me: “Did you eat lunch?”

I smiled and wrote back: “Yes. You?”

The answer came immediately: “I am studying now. I am well, Mom.”

I touched the wooden medal with my finger.

Nineteen years ago they placed a child in my arms and told me that this was the family’s shame.

And I built my life from him.

Now that life was breathing peacefully.

And for the first time, no one needed to protect it.

Missed the beginning?
